OREGON 4 < r Gay Crowd Cement Plant Attends Fair Tests New Lime Here Saturday A guy crowd of over 3000 attend ed the eighth annual Northwest Jackson countv fair In Gold Hill last Saturday, which termed the most successful fair »ver held here. The fair was bl'»"“’ and bel ter In every respect. There were 1.4(H) exhibits in all, compared to the 750 exhibits of last year. The crowd attending the parade In the morning wux about twice as big us in previous years and the sports events in the afternoon drew a large crowd. Over 2000 |*nplr en joyed the famous free barbecue tn the evening and about 530 danrerr enjoyed the guy evening dance In the Gold Hill pavilion, dunring to music by Glenn Hamilton unit his orchestra. Queen Ina Pearl Lucas graciously reigned over the joyous activity as sisted by Princesses Virginia ('en ters, Edith Howes, Charlotte (barter and Geneva Moore. Crowning of lli queen was held during the morning parade that started the activities ol the dny. The coronation ndflress wus given by Dennis McGuire and Mayor It. G. Wiglc turned over the key of the city »o Fair chairman Wm. Howes. The afternoon sports program drew ii large crowd with the events supervised by Dennis McGuire and i.'lurence (!ook. The afternoon dunce was also well uttendcd. Al five o'clock a musical prugrum was greatly enjoyed on the city hall lawn where the crowd gathered to rest und wait for the barbecue. Serving of thr famous barbecue started at 0:311 with residents from all over southern Oregon attending this event. A long line of diners murchod through the outdoor kitch en for over three hours, to receive (heir delicious free meal. A filling end Io the days activities was the big fair night dunce in the Gold Hill pavilion with everyone enjoying the music and gay crowd. Prise winners in the parade were organization flout. The Spy-Glast Thursday, September 5, 1040 NUMBER 19 V IE W S D F F E S T IV E E V E N T School Opens Here Monday, September 9 The Reaver - Portland Cement company, located in Gold Hill, la opening a quarry in Colvlg gulcii, about two miles back of the Cha*. E. Gray ranch, in order to develop a reserve supply of lime rock. The quarry is being proven by opera tion tests rather than by drill hole test*. A road to the site of the quar ry has been completed, the new road leaving the Pacific highway just west of the Rockpoint bridge. The Cement company is oiierator of the Marble Mountain quurry and the California and Oregon Coast railroad company in Josephine county where they are now getting their lime. Questioned if the new quurry would he used and the Marble Mouiffain project abandoned should Ihe ruilroad (here he scrapped fol lowing a proposed sheriff's tax sale, W. H. Muirheud, vice president of the Cement company said that Ihe new quarry "bus no relation" Io the lax sale of Ihe railroad. He ulso stated that Marble Mountain will continue to operate as at present Students in the Gold Hill section will return to their classes this coming week with the opening of school scheduled for Monday, Sep tember 9. The busses will make their regular runs, leaving Gold Hill at 8 o’clock. Registration will start at 9 o'clock. Grade students are to report to their rooms which will be marked. Parents wishing to bring first grad ers are encouraged to do so. The high school students will register as follows: seniors, D. H. McGuire in the office; juniors, Beth Paulsen in the study hull; sophomores, John Essman in the Science room and freshman with Bea Evans in the Commercial room. Several improvements have been made on the school buildings dur ing the summer months and two new teachers have been added to the teaching staff. The addition of an extra teacher in the high school makes it possible to increase the number of courses offered to high school students. A new room for the third grade has been completed in the former lunch room in the basement. The room lias been painted crome yellow and trimmed in blue. The gymnasium is being .ealed and will be painted when finished. The outside of the bu» garage and gymnasium have both seen painted battleship grey. Grade school teachers are first grade, Joyce Handley; second, Madge MMetfelt^lifrd, Grace Big ham; fourth, Zelma Thompson; fifth, Kathryn Denzer; sixth and seventh, Aikne Inlaw; seventh and eighth, Ralph Train and opportun ity room, Mabel Moore. The high school teachers will have charge of the following cours es: Beth Paulsen, English, mathe matics, sewing; Bea Evans English, home economics, commercial sub jects; Dorothy Burket, English, speech, Spanish, orientation and world geography; John Essman, science, shop, mechanical drawing and athletics. D. H. McGuire, super intendent of the grade and high school, will teach the social scienc es. D. E. Millard will return to have charge of the orchestra this year. He will teach on Fridays. Veltie Biles will drive the new school bus on the Pacific highway, west, Foots Creek and down the river road to Banrys. Carl Routh will drive the Dodge and will cov er Sardine and Galls Creeks. Clint Walker will drive the Rio and his route will include the Old Stage road, Willow Springs and back the Pacific highway and out Sams Val ley to Lymans. FORMER RESIDENTS DROWN WHILE HI NTING CRABS John und Alice Dufur, former residents of Gold Hill, who are well known here, lost their lives whi1 hunting crabs near Ilwaco, Wash ington, Monday, September 2. Mr Dufur is a brother of Kendal Dufur of Gold Hill and a son of the for mer Addie Hays. He is also surviv ed by another brother Burnham and a sister Ruth. Mr. and Mrs. Dur- ur visited relatives and friends here three weeks ago. Mr. Dufur wc employed by General Petroleum ant Mrs. Dufur by Dunn and Bradstrect in Portland. The Dufurs had been rrnb hunt ing off l.eadhetter Point and lost their lives »with two other victim*, vhen they attempted to wade 250 feel to shore after a rising tide rapped them on a sand spit. She is recovering nicely after show night. in Grants Pass Saturday having her tonsils weak. removed last Through efforts of the Gold Hill Garden club a sidewalk is to be constructed on the Rogue River bridge at Gold Hill. The construct tion of the sidewalk was approved at a recent meeting of the state highway commission. The action was taken after Nellie G. Reed, chairman of the highway beautifi cation committee of the garden club hud written several letters to the highway commission requesting »he construction of the sidewalk on the bridge. The sidewalk will add greatly to the benefit and safety of jiedestrians who are obliged to use this bridge. According to word received by Mrp. Reed the commission had giv en the matter very careful consid eration and it had been discussed at several of their meetings. The commission approved the request at their meeting late in August anrt they have authorized the engineer to proceed with the construction of this sidewalk as soon as a crew $ available to do the work,
