The total amount of the Copco tuxes in this state sh ow an increase of 6.72 per cent over the amount of the 1939 taxes paid last year, officials said. It Is the intention of the museum to present a com plete cross section of the w ork of artists of this state w ith a view not only of in form ing itself of the status and cal ibre of Oregon's artists, but also id giving the general public a com prehensive idea of w hat is going on in the fine arts here. All seriou s Oregon artists are being invited to |*artieipate in this exh ib ition, and the museum Is guaranteeing to hang at least one work by every artist subm itting work. Painting in all m ediums and sculpture are eligible, and artists may send three w orks in any one medium or a total of five w orks in several mediums. There w ill be no jury, but the D irector of the museum, Robert T yler Dgvis, has assumed so le responsibility for deciding w hich one, or more works by any artist w ill form part of the exhibition. Another important and exp eri mental aspect of this show is that no prizes are being offered. The false em phasis placed on w orks by the aw arding of prizes w ill be a- voided.! Instead, the museum is guaranteeing that at least ten work:, from the exhibition w ill be sold, and has undertaken to find at least ten civic m inded persons w ho w ill pledge them selves, before the works of art arrive at the museum, to buy at least one w ork from the final show . In this w ay it is hoped to in still in the general public a realiza tion that w orks of art contem por aries are purchasable com m odities, and make it easier for the artists of Oregon to get into contact w itn their potential buying public.
