Hie negro hus been an increasingly im p o rta n t character in A m erican fic tio n . T here have de veloped ce rtu in ty picul negro s to r ies, runging fro n t the sim ple pres- entaion o f the negro us Hie victim o f a system, to the d is lillu tio n s of the h o rro r school, in w h ic h the in d iv id u a l negro becomes the victim o f poor w h ile monsters. T h ro u g h out a ll this, the negro characters in Southern novels have tended to he swamped under sociul im p lica tio n s — fo r even the most adm irable so cia l theses can p e trify the charac ters o f a novel. There have been notuhle excep tions, fo r instance in the novels o f Ju lia P e te rkin and DuBose H ey w a rd . and in the plays o f Paul Green. In th is category comes "Deep D ark R ive r” by Robert Bylee. Mose S o u th w ick, a member o f the class o f shurecroppers is an acutely observed und sym p a th e tica lly pre- [ sented negro character. H is is ft p ro fo u n d ly human situ a tio n , and he ¡ meets it in a p ro fo u n d ly human w ay. He is a sim ple ta ilo rin g negro, and he is distinguished b y an abun dant in n e r life , a confidence in h im self w h ich takes a re lig io u s bent, a know ledge o f his rig h ts anil a de te rm in a tio n to stand up fo r them. Mose k ills , in se lf defense, the ne g ro h ire d by the p la n ta tio n m an ager to shoot h im ; he runs away, I but he returns, is caught and trie d fo r m urder. In the second p a rt o f “ Deep P a rk R ive r,” w h ic h is the m u rd e r tria l, flic vie w sh ifts fro m Mose to M ary W in sto n , the wom an la w y e r w ho defends him . W h ile the setting and details o f the s to ry are those o f the M ississippi, the essential sto ry is universal. I t is not so m uch the sto ry o f a victim ize d negro as o f a courageous s p iritu a l v ic to ry . It is not the sto ry o f a static character defeated by his e nvironm ent, hut of a developing character w h o t r i umphs over adverse circumstances. There is an almost m ystical q ual ity , almost a feeling o f tra n s fig u ra tio n at the end, an ending somewhat s im ila r to that o f “ The Green Pas- P arents D on't lei eyestrain handicap your child's school w ork.
