Just how far can human endeav or go in athletic lines? Many years ago an Englishman named George ran a mile in 4.12 which means four minutes and twelve seconds. This mark stood for years and very few men appeared who could do a mile under 4.26. Last year Glen Cunning ham of Kansas University ran a mile in 4.06 and Jack Lovelock of New Zealand ran one in a trifle over 4.07. Just this week the three best ran almost a dead heat in about 4.11; Lovelock being the winner. It looks now as tho some one may yet come along and do a mile In four minutes flat. W hat’s the use of wasting time on horses and grey hounds when human beings can run like that? I A drag-line gold dredge, the first to be used in southern Oregon, w ill begin operations in the Rogue riv er just above the town of Rogue River about June 25, if present plans of its builders materialise. The Oregon-organized Rogue River Dredged, Inc., of which J. D. Vanre is president, w ill operate the plant. Possibilities of increased dredg ing activities in the Rogue have been noted in options reported tak en along he river above Grants Pass and in test operations contemplated for about August 1. The drag-line outfit w ill have a capacity of 200 cubic yards every 24 hours, and w ill employ 10 or 12 men in three shifts, explained H. C. Milchell, manager of the plant and dredger of experience in sev eral states. Equipment w ill be sent from San Francisco ready for in stallatiop, he said. The entire unit w ill be powered with electricity, and is the same as that widely in use in the Oroville and Lincoln districts of northern California. Working with the crew w ill be E. L. Reeves, mining engineer and graduate of Syracuse and California universities. He was a lieutenant commander in the United States naval air forces during the war. and had had about 25 years mining experience. The company ig declared to be a closed corporation.
