Mr. Cody, who has lived in Oregon for 70 years, and in Jack- ton county for I t years, found the unusual specimen in his yard. The petrified hoof, clearly show ing in stone Ihe hoof shell, Ihe frog of the foot, and fool bones was shown to Dr. Gitzen, Medford vet- rinarian, and pronounced that of a horse, undoubtedly. Local amateur historians, declaiming the possibil ity of a petrified horse’s hoof in this locality, upon reflection admit that there is a possibility that the horse inay have been one of the stock planted by runaways from those brought into this country by early Spanish explorers.— Medford Mail Tribune. Oregoa Although D o r o t h y Canfield's •’Bonfire" is not one ot the newer books, it is still widely read and discussed, as have been mast of Miss Canfield's novels. The story is set in a Vermont village, and abounds in a number of well-observed char acter* und harmonious themes. It does, however, leap from situations which are dramatic, to some which are flagrantly melodramatic and wallows on occasions in the most vicious type of sentimentality and .«solves in the end, into almost a parody of sweetness and light. Yet in the course of this many-sided story there are situations and char acters that possess something that closely resembles Ihe blood and Ixme of life. One popular critic once wrote, “One of the most disheartening things about the best popular nov els is the fact that almost invaribly they utilize material inherently sound, handle it with deftness, con cision, sincerity and a high degree of intelligence, and yet fail dismally to rise above the level of decent commercial w riting.” We feel that this very aptly fits Miss Canfield's novel. She draws a character well, reveals his outward aspect and his inner aspirations, and then when she places the character In a d ra matic situation, both the situation and the character become warped.
