Carter stated Wednesday that there were less than 100 commercial fishermen at Gold Beach and that only 2a o f tticse lived there the vear round. The business interests of that town have decided that the business brought by sportsmen and tourists more than offset that de rived from the commercial fishing activity. Construction of a ailroad from Port Orford to connect w ith Ihe Southern Pacific road at Leland is expected to start also this year. An eastern company is in te r ested in the project and is w aiting the approval o f the interstate com merce commission. Large Steelhead Taken From Illin o is River— Claimed to he the largest steelhead trout caught in Josephine county in Ihe last seven years, an 18(4 pound prize was taken from the Illin o is riv e r by a parly of Grants P a s s fishermen Inst Wednesday. Townsend Club Members Seek Recall Representative— A recall election on Representa tive Howard Merriman of Lane county w ill be called about March 20. it was made known in Salem Saturday. The required number of signatures on a petition asking the recall election were filed w ith the secretary of state.
