An influx of immigrants into Oregon from the drouth-stricken area was predicted by John W. Haw of St. Paul, Minnesota, a mem ber of the department of the inter ior’s special reclamation commit tee, in a talk Tuesday before the slate chamber of commerce, at Portland. And Oregon is preparing to wel come them with open arms. Many midwest drought state ren- idents already have moved into the Oregon country, record* show, and many more are coming. To cope with the situation, a committee has met to seek addit ional federal settlers’ aid for the northwest states; to catalog all Oregon lands in improved agricul tural areas offering existing and potential settlement opportunities; to give sympathetic audience to settlers whether they have money to invest or not, and to attempt to protect investors from “ land rack eteer».” Various chambers of commerce in Oregon w ill be asked to con tribute to the cost of the work out lined, and an appeal w ill be made to the legislature for state aid. This program is all part of the welcome which Oregon seeks to dive jfs prospective residents, and every section of Ihe stale is in ■ position to benefit by this influx of citizens. In addition, a program is also be ing resigned to bring in large in dustries to the Pacific northwest, which w ill utilize the enormous hydro-electric power being made possible by the Bonneville dam, H. V. Carpenter, dean of engin eering at Washington State college and chairman of the planning com mission’s power commission, is preparing committees to study a number of projects. Separate committees w ill report on uses of power in pumping water for irrigation; study of metals, wood products and chemicals w ith a view of bringing such industries to the northwest as heavy power users; acquisition of land for in dustrial sites and their control near plants; ascertain from private and municipal utilities on what basis power can be sold to distrib uting agencies; study possibilities •if home heating as a market for electric power. Highway W idening Thru City Planned for Fall Prospects for the widening of the highway through Gold H ill looked brighter this week when It was announced that the job was included in a tentative road pro gram for the coming fall and win ter. The job calls for widening and re-surfacing according to resident engineer of this county. No defi nite time has been set for the start of the work. Several other projects are also planned and the work w ill give employment to at least 200 men, it was stated.
