NOT A BALLYHOO SHOW
With everyone thinking and talk
ing about the coming Diamond
Jubilee to be staged in tbs county
early in June, one cannot help bul
commend the committee in charge
(or their good judgment in selecting
events (or the week.
The coronation of Queen Mother
of the celebration is truly a (itting
example of what the celebration
should include. It lends dignity to
the occasion.
A few years ago nearly every cel
ebration featured a bathing beauty
contest or some similar contest to
select a queen for thier celebration.
It was even suggested for the Dia
mond Jubilee. But a smart commit
tee said no, this is not a ballyhoo
show.
The honor of Queen Mother is to
be conferred on the outstanding
pioneer woman in the state, paying
special tribute to pioneer woman
hood. This event scheduled for the
second day of the Jubilee should be
attended by everyone in the state
that can possibly attend.
Other major events are all plan
ned in relation to the growth and
development of the state, always
keeping in mind that the week is an
observance of the state's “5th an
niversary of admittance to the
union—and not just an advertising
celebration.
Termites (white ants) bored so
many holes in the framework of the
house and barn of Henry Droege,

ings had to be razed.
Advertising rates on application
With announcement of reduced
transportation costs for the sum
mer season, representatives of the
Southern Pacific company yester
day predicted a marked pickup in
tourist travel to the Northwest this
year.
The low rates will be in effect
from May 15 to October 15. with
return limit of October 31, and wilt
feature material cuts in coach and
intermediate fares, it was stated.
All classes of roundtrip tickets
to Chicago, to accommodate travel
Io the World Fair this year, will
be under the 1933 levels, according
to the announcement.
The new fare cuts, together with
removal of the Pu'lman surcharge-
throughout western and southeast
ern territory, will make travel
costs this summer the lowest in
many years, it was pointed ouc
that each individual itossvsses at
least 65000. 3000 more were admit

almost as soon as they landed.
