More than 175 people attended the affair and heard a splendid tribute j»y Professor Irving Vining of Ash land, speaker, to pioneer Mother- iiooi and the courage and vision which inspired them to carry on despite untold hardships. Professor Vining lost his own mother in death hut two months ago and his message was touchingly el oquent as he eulogized the early- pioneer mother. The group, following the lunch eon, witnessed the dedication of a beautiful Cedar of Lebanon, which tree was planted on Ihe courthouse grounds Io commemorate the occas ion and perpetuate the memory of ihe pioneers. A "Three-Quarters Century" club was formed at this time also, Mrs. Davis, as one of the early residents, joining Ihe organization. Mrs. W. F. Fred Baker Buys Interest in Shaver Barber Shop Fred Raker Wednesday became part owner of the Shaver barber shop, operated by the Shaver broth ers in this city for nearly a quarter of a century. Freddie bought the Mrs. Della Shaver’s interest in Ihe shop and will o|teraie Ihe place of business on a partnership basis for the present. Tom Shaver has operate«! Ihe shop on the south side since last summer but was arrested for drunk- enniss la-’ week and lodged in the county ja il He was sentenced to 30 days but was released on parole last Saturday when he returned to Gold Hili and worked Saturday evening. Tuesday when he was again found drunk he was return ed Io Ihe county jail, his parole hav ing been revoked. Wednesday he was ?f.ain released from jail and is now back at work here. Track Team to Enter Southern Norm al M eet Gold Hill high school will enlcr its track team in several meets this spring, Ihe first being the South ern Oregon Normal track and field meet ut Ashland, April 28. This meet is for class B schools of Jackson county and each school will enter two nien in each of the following events; 100 yard «lash, 220 yard dash, 440 yard dash, half mile run, mile run, 8 and 12 pound shotpul, discus throw, broad jump, high jump, pole vault and 440 yard relay race. Superintendent J. A. Thomason if handling the track work, while Coach Cook takes care of the base ball team. Several other track meets are on the Beaver’s schedule and these will be announced later. Attesting to his success as head of the Gold Hill schools for the past two years, Superintendent J. A. 'Pjiomason was reelected Io that position by a vote of the school board at their meeting Monday nighL 't his step has the hearty approval of the entire district, it is believed, as under the leadership of Mr. Thomason the school has maintain ed a high standard, both in scholas tic and extra curricula activities. Mr. Thomason will return at a lowered salary as will other teach ers if they accept contracts in ac cordance with the action of the school board at a special meeting last Friday afternoon, a 10 per cent cut having been voted. The board further slashed ex penses by dropping the d«*partment of vocal music headed by Mrs. Minnie Guy for the last 7 years. R. A. Botts, instrumental instructor, was retained, but will take a cut in salary. The reduced pay schedule effects a cut averaging ten per cent per teacher with Ihe exception ot two hired at Ike established minimal’, for first year teachers whose sal aries remain unchanged The entjre savings to the district will be $1712, six hundred and twenty-five of which was brought about by eliminating the vocal de partment. Practice with Coach Cook in charge, started last week. Two leagues have been formed by (he high schools in this county and Ihe winner of each league will play for the championship at the end of the season. The schedule for the Gold Hill team is given below; March 29—Sams Valley at Gold Hill. April 6—Gold Hill at Central Point. April 13—Talent high here. April 20—Butte Falls high here.
