Sheriff W alter J. Olmscheid def initely declared himself a candi date for tbe republican nomination for sheriff to succeed himself, when be tiled papers to that effect Wed nesday. Sheriff Olmscheid, who has held tbe office since his appointment a year ago following tbe political strife in tbe county, made no cam paign statement and announced no slogan, as most candidates do. The present sheriff has held of fice during an unusually difficult period, having served through the many trials arising from the ballot theft last February, and the killing of Constable Geo. Prescott. Many have expressed the opinion that, although new to public office and political circles, he has acquitted himself remarkably and has hand led tbe many duties of his office ably and well. The sheriff job seems to be one of thel moot popular w ith office seekers of the county, many aspir ants having hinted that they might run. Oregon School* Benefit From Many CW A Job* Nearly $300,000 has been spent to late on CWA labor and materials jn school buildings and grounds, iccording to reports received by C. A. Howard, Superintendent of Public Instruction, from county superintendents of 20 counties. The reports showed a total of 383 projects and included repairing and painting of school buildings, improving fixtures, side walks and school grounds, and building of ad ditional rooms to relieve over crowded conditions in some dis tricts. These projects have mater ially helped many districts which have had to postpone necessary re pairs because of financial distress. According to Superintendent Howard, school expenditures fo r maintenance and repair of buildings had dropped from $1,020,449 in 1929-30 to $204,251 in 1632-33. E x penditure* for new buildings was $3,132,818 in 1929-30 as compared with $252,941 during tbe past school year 1932-33. Multnomah county heads the list of school project* w ith an expendi ture of $103,801 on twelve large projects. Clackamas county report ed $49,454 spent on 50 projects and Linn County $41,227 on 58 school project*. __ _ ..........
