The M ost Thoroughly Read W eekly in Southern Oregon, Published in the Biggest L ittle Tow n in the State VOLUME XXXVI BALLOT CASES OPEN TUESDAY M en W ho Figured in Banks T ria l W ill Have Charge of Suits W ith Auistant Attorney General Ralph Moody unit Circuit Judge George F. Sklpworth presiding (or the state, the trials (or stealing bul- lots from the Jackson county court house last February 20 w ill get un der way Tuesday of next week. 'Ibesc are the same two men who were in charge of the trial of L. A. Hanks, former Medford editor, charged with murder, who Is now under Hie sentence (or killing O ffi cer George J. Prescott, when lie went to the Hunks home to arrest Hanks in the ballot stealing rase. Tw enty-tw o men, including Coun ty Judge Furl II. Fehl and former County Sheriff Gordon I.. Setter- merhorn, are involved in the bullot stealing, which according to author ities, took plucc during a meeting of the so-called Good Government congress. They state that it was while I - A. Hanks whs delivering an nddress to the congress that he held up his pen with a match in the clip in the sign of a cross and made a few apparently meaningless remarks, which were greeted with noisy and prolonged applnuse. This has since been Interpreted as u sign to those “In the know" in the audience that the ballot stealing had been started, and the resulting applause was Io help hide any noise that the thieves might make. The ballots were stolen on the eve of a recount which had bee« called by defeated Sheriff Jennings, who wns a write-in candidate, as there had been considerable mis understanding about ll|e proper way to w rite In his name, and be cause his margin of defeat was very ■mail. It is not likely, officials report that the defendanat w ill ask a changr of venue, as all must sign such a petition, and several have already pleaded guilty. As soon us the ballot cases are disposed of, the state plans to take up the case of Henrietta B. Martin, president of the so-called "good gov ernment congress", und aide to Hanks in his agitntion moves. She ir Indicted for riotous nnd dis orderly conduct, as the result of an rtttack with a buggy whip on Leo nard Hall, editor of the Jacksonville Miner, February 17 Inst. Indicted as aides of Mrs. Martin, are L. O. Van Wegau and E. L. Fitch, reputed “congressmen”. C. H. Brown, secretary of the “Good Government congress," nnd father of Mrs. Martin, indicted for “slandering a hank," is also schedul ed to be brought to trial ns soon ns possible. Crim inal syndicalism charges, growing out of the Banks-stirred turm oil w ill be heard after the above matters have been concluded. A syndicated letter from Salem, the past week, contained the Infor mation that Governor Julius L. Meier, had detailed undercover agents to report to him on condi tions in this county. They have been working for a couple of months, unbeknown to the general public, it is reported. GOLD H IL L BATTING AVERAGES D. W alker ............... .. M. Kittle .................... . T .
