Heavy W inds C arry Smoke from Coast; R*d-voods Are Burned Forest fire smoke filled this sec tion over Hie week-end, and al though many residents thought Ihe fires must be close, reports came from the fcrest service department that the smoke was from bad fires in Coos and Curry counties, where high winds whipped small slash fire into menacing blazes, and car ried the snioke far inland. One fire was reported in the Pleasant Creek district up Evans Valley, and two small fires on Jacksonville hill near the city of Jacksonville brought out twels* men from the Star ranger station on Applegate, but otherwise no local blazes were reported. According to Siskiyou National Forest Supervisor G. E. Mitchell, Friday and Saturday of last week were the Verst burning days of the year. A number of slash fires got entirely out of control and ran into green limber, destroying some of Ihe finest Redwoods in the Harbor district below Brookings. Serious fires are still burning there, al though it is expected that they will be under control by the end of the week. Mitchell states that damage has been caused to both personal property and community asset of scenery that can not be repaired in 100 years. All over the forest the humidity was exceedingly low. and Saturday an unusually high wind rose, spreading many slash fires and making them raging furnaces. This condition is the one which forest officers ar? most fearful of, and is the reason that people are re quested to consult the forest serv ice department or thq state fire department before burning slash ings. These departments have instru ments which detect the weather changes which affect humidity and give rise to high winds, and can advise whether it is unsafe to bum slashings. Serious fires are still burning in the Chetco and Winchuck water sheds in Southern Curry county, bat are being gradually brought under control. In the Tioga district in the north end of the county more than 60 men are fighting a fire along a four-mile front, and an emergency call was placed for 20 more. The fire was reported caused by a campfire which spread into slashings. Much virgin timber is being destroyed. Hunters Prepare fo r Deer Season Opening, Sept. 20 With the opening of the deer season less than a week distant, lo cal nimrods are oiling guns, check ing equipment and otherwise mak ing plans to bring home that big buck this fall. The deer season is scheduled to open Tuesday, Septem ber 20. Deputy Game Warden Ed Walker has announced that many hunters are confused on the law as to the limit permitted each hunter and in order to clarify the matter quotes the law. Il reads as follows: “Deer with forked horns—Open season September 20 to October 25 of each year. Bag limit, 2 Columbian black- tail deer or 1 mule deer or 1 white tailed (leer during any one season. MAYBE “SMUDGE POT” WAS NOT IN CONDITION TO KNOW “Smudge Pot” Perry in his column in the Mail-Tribune this week: “Your eorr. was down at Gold Hill Tuesday evening and notic ed shoes squeaking on wooden sidewallin.” Methinks S. P. P. waa in the wrong town. Doesn’t he know that Gold Hill is the home of the Beaver Portland Cement plant, and that wooden sidewalks have long been passe? — But, perhaps said paragraph got transposed from the 20 years ago column.
