DISTRICT ASKS FUNDS W ill Seek $10,060 from Re construction Finance Corporation The Gold H ill irrigation district w ill make application to the Recon struction Finance corporation for $16,000 to he used in construction work on their flumes and water sys- em, according to Bcrhtu Coy, secre tary of Ihe irrigation hoard. The application w ill be made in order to put into effect at once a program of work which is greatly needed, but which would have to he undertaken over a three-.vear period if Ihe federal funds are not made available. The board points out that the funds would be used largely for labor and materials such as lum ber; that the funds are urgently needed so that flume replacements can be made now to insure water delivery for croi>s next season; also that a substantial saving in water and operatiP6 costs could he effect ed, and that maintenance and in terest costs would be reduced if the three year-program were completed this fall. The district is solvent and the loan would be self-liquidating, the board states. A recent survey of the district shows that it is unuually produc tive, and that plenty of water has been available to the 88 property owners served by the ditch. Finan cially, also the district is one of the best in the state, but like other dis tricts, is finding it difficult to oper ate under present conditions, and the Finance corporation aid could be used most advantageously at this time. The acreage survey of the 1,040 acres is as follows: Alfalfa, 413 acres, w ith an aver age yield of 5 tons to the acre. Corn is raised on 55 acres and averages 50 bushels. F ru it, including peaches, pears and cherries takes up 175% acres w ith an estimated value of the crop per acre of 9300 to 9500. Tw enty-tw o acres are in truck garden, which does not include p riv ate gardens. The main crops raised are melons, tomatoes and sweet corn. No general estimate of the value of these crops was given, but tomatoes w ill run from 9350 to 9500 per acre, in the district, and farmers find a ready market for their corn, melons and smaller crops. The 200 acres in grain yields 30 bushels per acre. W . W . H ittle is the main cherry producer in the district. Other own ers are being urged to start or chards. however, as they are a val uable crop and the local climate is ideal for them. The irrigation board held its regular budget meeting Tuesday to plan for the new year, and have prepared an estimate of expenses, and the tax levy necessary. A hear ing of property owners for or against the levy w ill be held October 4. C. About twelve G. A, R. members, representing Ashland, Medford, Gold H ill, Central Point, Roseburg and Grants Pass were registered. A huge picnic lunch was served at noon, followed by a' program. The local ladles sang tw o songs and Mrs. Vroman gave a reading entitled “Sword of Beverly Ford.” A light lunch was served in the evening before adjournment. Mrs. Calvert who lives at Grants Pass, but who is a member of the local W. R. C. has been elected delegate to the national convention to be held in Iowa.
