A R D beginnings often make easy endings. I t had
fallen to the lot of Washington, at 21, to uncover
French designs for older heads to prevent. But Fate
willed otherwise, and on N ovem ber 24, 1758, the
French, having had enough of this persiftent youth,
abandoned Fort Duquesne and set it on fire. Washing­
ton raised the B ritis h flag od the ru in s, rode to
Williamcburg. resigned his commission, and prepared
for his wedding to M artha Dandridge Parke Cuftis.
