May We Suggest?
Quite often lately items have come to cur attention
through different persons, which would work to the im
provement of our community and its development in the
future, but almost has often, too, the regret has been ex
pressed that there is no civic body other than the Com
mercial dub, through which these civic projects can be
promoted.
One suggestion has been made to us— that a women's
organization be ti lined to cooperate with the Commercial
club when possible, in backing community undertakings.
because our town is comparatively small, and there
are already several organizations which have regular
Tneettng days,, and whose activities take considerable
time, another idea has occurred to us that might meet the
need, temporarily, at least.
If '.he \ \ . R. C., I ast Noble Grands, Rebekah Lodge

Sewing club, and any other existing organization of the
town among the ladies w. uld appoint a Civic committee to
wc rk m conjunction with committees of the other organ
izations, calling on other members of their group, w hen
ever necessary, to help in any program outlined, the
group formed in this way could lie the "go-between” for

The Tax Road
Practically one-quarter of the national income went
to the government in 1931. The exact percentage is 22.1,
as compared with 14.4 in 1930 and 6.4 in 1913.
When, in a single year, the proportion of national in-
come consumed by taxes can rise almost eight per cent,

it is time for the thoughtful
citizen . to take
action.
The
present trend is plain— the United States has started on
the long, dark read that Australia, Germany England and
other countries have taken. The result, if it keeps to that
road, will be the same as in those countries — industrial
stagnation, steadily increasing unemployment, imbalanced
budgets, possibly impairment of credit— and, always, even
higher taxation.
High taxes drive capital away from business, and
force it into tax-free bonds. They make for hoarding
and are thus the best friends of depression. This tax
problem is a real problem nowadays— and every citizen
must face it.
