The Friends of Depression

,n earf>’»ng "U the fin ncial w ork of the
world. They are a sign
hysterical 1 ind of
conservatism that mistakes hoarding for thrift.
True thrift is a fine thing. It is the s urce of the
money that builds plants, buys and operates machinery.
As an advertisement of the Northern States Power
Company recently said: “The opportunity to earn a return
on investment is better today than f, r years. Banks nav
interest on deposits regularly. Sound securities earn, and
pay, a regular, safe income.”
The hoarder is cheating himself—of greater impor
tance, he is cheating us all. He is prolonging unemploy
ment, profitless prices, the accumulation ci goods for
which there is no market because people have m> money to
buy. He is, m the full sense of the word, anti-social.
. This is worth remembering: Idle dollars are the best
friends of depression. Working dollars are its worst enemy.
