That Eternal School Problem!
Taxing problems are still the main topic of conversa
tion in many circles, and the cutting of teachers’ salaries
as one means ot reducing school taxes looms large on the
horizon. I he county school committee’s proposal to make
a county-wide reduction has been rejected and the m atter
is lett as before to the local school boards.
r
course, there are two sides to the question, but
first of all the qualifications of the teachers is to be consid
ered, as well as the efficiency of the school system, itself.
Cooperation ot teachers, parents, taxpayers ' and school
board is necessary to achieve the best type of school in
any community.
Little has been heard lately of the suggested parent-
teachers association. We do not believe that Gold Hill as
a community is uninterested in its schools, and that the
patrons and tax payers believe that when a school board
is elected, that their own duty has been done.
Even if a P. T. A. is not organized, an active interest
and cooperation in school matters can be shown. We sug-
gest attending the meetings of the school board and fa
miliarizing ourselves with the problems its members have
to tace, as well as voicing any complaints or de
fense we may have to make.

This Is Thrift Week
This is national Thrift week, and President Hoover
gives this message to American citizens: “Thrift is not
hoarding. It is the wise provision against future needs ”
Coolidge has said “Above all, wise thrift calls for the
expenditure of money to save people.”
, .g y rin g the past year, people have fast learned that
their foolish spending of previous years, truly did not
provide for the future” nor save them and others from
the depression. They have learned the value of a dollar
and of each fraction of a dollar. But will the lesson take?
The unemployment problem, according to reports
from counties over the state is getting no better fast. In
Jackson county a county measure has been proposed to
provide placer locations on county lands for unemployed
ed who wish to pan for gold. We think it a step in the
right direction, and many should avail themselves of this
opportunity. There are many other placer locations in
southern Oregon which, although not worth developing on
a large scale, would yield many emergency dollars for the
needy. \\ hv not go a step farther and some of the land
owners allow their land to be placered at this time? There
is considerable water available since recent rains, and with
a little work, reasonable wages can be obtained.
