IT MAY BE BAKER, NOW From the dispatches of the past week Newton D. Bak er is more than ever an outstanding contender for the nom ination of the Democratic party for the presidency. Frank lin D. Roosevelt has held the spotlight for a long time but things have transpired which might shake his hold upon the party. He has pulled the whiskers of the tammany ti ger and that is almost an unpardonable sin among the Dem ocrats. Only Win. Jennings Bryan has the honor of cuff ing the tiger and making him like it. Perhaps Roosevelt can. Perhaps the break with Tammany is hut a hoax. Any way Roosevelt and Tammany had different opinions about the New York crime investigation. A greater breach was no doubt caused when Roosevelt suggested the taxing of the wealthy residents of New York state to promote the relief program. That kind of talk is always unpopular among the people who put up the cash for political cam paigns. It will no doubt react to the undoing of the gover nor. The fellows who have amassed those large fortunes are usually so well organized that they can find ways and means of hanging on to them. There is one thing which must be self evident to any one who has even the least inkling of common sense and that is this: A man who is not making money, regardless of his property holdings cannot pay taxes and assume the load which he is being called upon to assume. There is only one fair way to raise revenues for any purpose in times such as these—an income tax. A tax against the people who are making money. The more money they make the more they should pay. It is high time for a change and we believe that if the people of the United States are given the proper leadership that there will be a change. We also believe that from the course of events of the past few years that the leadership will not come from within the inner workings of the parties which are now in power. Another year cf political bung ling such as we have witnessed in the past few years and our next national leader will have to come from the remote + ♦ + outer circle.
