On the ballot we are given the right to vote for or against the building of the courthouse and also for or against the W ashington school site. It is up to the city of M edford to support the county court house for two more years so we can see little cause to get excited over the issue at this early date. M any changes might take place within the next two years and should we vote for the W ashington school site and then som ething b etter should present itself we would be terribly disappointed. So fa r as convenience is concerned the A rm ory site is more easily accessible to the g re a ter portion of the county than the W ashington school site but we have a hunch th at a b e tte r site than either of these can be chosen in the city of M edford and one which does not n e c e s s ita te a lot of red tape or the destruction of any present structure. Be sides, if the W ashington school site is. chosen the property m ust yet be obtained from the school d istrict and that entails some little manipulation, itself. W e hope the voters will not be too hasty in casting their votes on this question. * * * A fter all we have heard about the terro rs of prohibi tion and also front our own observation we wonder w hether prohibition has brought on the present moral slump or w hether the change of standards has not brought about the disregard for the prohibition laws. W hen we consider the changes which have taken place in this country in the past decade and a half we are inclined to believe th a t the prohibition situation is merely a natural result of a so-called social liberty which has been assumed in this nation. Ju st so long as the dear girlies who are diestined to be the m others of our com ing g en er ation insist upon displaying their right to equal ligerties w ith men by practicing up ag itatin g a cocktail shaker instead of rocking a cradle, just so long will the moral con ditions of the nation become worse instead of b e tte r; and all this regardless of w hether we have prohibition, reg u la tion or the open saloon. * < x * * A fter Friday of this week, we wil be assured of one thing, the candidates who will represent their p arty in the fall elections will be chosen and som ething else will have to be used to excite the people then for a few m onths until the general election “gets hot.’’ No m a tte r who is nom inated and elected we. will still have just as many problems is ever------ There will be highw ays which should be built and are not, the farm ers will need relief they will not get, there will be unem ploy m ent, high power rates, high taxes, chain stores and a lot o f other evils to afflict. ♦ * * t Around the w Ils are Interesting maps and wonderful pictures, be sides show cases containing coral and any number of agates and sea s .ells. There are also seven guns presented to the school by World War veterans. In the library arc displayed a basketball .presented to the lug a school basketball team for the last sportmanship at the Ash land Tournament and various tro phies i f victories which have been obtained in bath track and basket ball in spite of the fact that the team is trained by a man from town who receives no salary for his ser vices. The gymnasium is very spacious and is used not only for athletics but also for school dances. At the end of the building is the stage. The course of study is somewhat limited since only two teachers are now employed! The periods last forty minutes. There is no com mercial department and no modern language, although both Latin I and Latin II are given. The classes which have finished their work are review iiig by means of eighth grade exams or taking college entrance exams. MEDFORD 1 M ONDAY GRADE NEWS Wilfred Cook of the first grade has moved to Portland to go to school. Fifteen pupils out of the school grade were neither absent nor tar dy in the last month. The 3rd and 4th grade hud 98.3 per cent for attendance Tuesday. They are now doing work for the fair next fall. SENIOR PLAY The Senior play “Safety First”, is nearing completion and will lx- pre sented at the High School Auditor ium next Tuesday, May 20. “The Nugget" the high school annual will lie off the press sometime this week. Copies may he procured for one dollar, at the Senior play. . --------o-------- THE HOME AND SCHOOL Tlie last State legislature passed a law requiring public schools to give twenty minutes of character instruction daily. A government re port listed as two of the seven car dinal principles of education—Good Citizen and Character Training. Every sincere teacher is conscious at times during their instruction of this responsibility and take advant age of every opportunity to impress the students with the lessons of Good Citizenship and ethical living. The best results can never be ob tained until the home and school co-operate and each take their share of this responsibility. If either falls dawn, the best results can never be obtained.
