been maintained on 40 acres of land
without using anything that would lie
sold from the farm If an ordinary
good system of grain farm ing was
practiced.
The rotation used has been com,
corn, outs seeded to sweet elover and
sweet clover. The cows have been
pastured on the second-year sweet
Clover Held from spring until early
fall. They have been put on the oats
stubble which has had a good growth
of sweet clover by that time. In the
meantime, one Held of corn bus been
cut nnd niude up Into stover silage,
while the second Held of corn has been
husked. As soon as the oats stubbie
has lieen pastured down the cows have
been lurned Into the second cornfield
to graze over the stnlks. They hnve
then been tnken to their w inter quar­
ters where they have been maintained
on a rotation of stover sltuge, oats
straw nnd one pound of cottonseed
meal a day. This w inter ration has
cost about 10 cents a day for each
cow.
The calves hnve run with their
dams until wennlng time. An soon ns
hlg enough they huve been put on a
grain ration fed In a creep. Under
this method, all o f the grain produced
on the 40 acres has been sold either
as a cash crop or marketed through
the calves. They have been full fed
from the start and sold as buhy
beeves, a plan which will bring the
farm er more profit than If the calves
are carried as stackers for a while.
