I lie first Southern Oregon Ituxket- ball Conference came Io a close lust, night, This Conference win spon sored by the Southern Oregon Ath letic akaoclatlon and w*im to settle the district championship for the smaller schools. So successful was this first meet that it will be carried on and mild an annual event. Cast night Central Point won the championship when it defruted Rogue River by a score of 11 to 18. The Hogue River girls took the girls* championship by defeating Prospect by a score of 36 to 32. Tile first game of the finals wvs between Prospect and Rogue River girls* teams. The Prospect girls were touted to win thia contest, hut the Rogue River girls went after their op|>onents’ scalps and got them. It was a fast game and the River nymphs took the lead In the first qut rter. Score 8 to 6. At the half Rogue River had the best of a 24 to 13 «rare and ended the game with 36 to 32. In the boys* finals Central Point won from Gold Hill by a score of 41 to 18. Gold Hill was clearly out classed by Central Point. In fact there was no term at the Conference which was in Central Point’s class and there is talk of excluding Cen tral Point from next seasons jeonfer- s'lM'e, the claim being made that Central Point should play such teams as Grants Pass, Klamath Palls, etc. The argument is strengthened by the fact that it is reported that Central Point will now challenge the winner of the Ashland-Medford series for the chance Io represent the district at the state tournment next month. The gpuic between Gold Hill and Central Point was one-sided the I,iHc« taking the lead and maintain ing it throughout. However, the Gold Hill hoys put up a valiant fight. Their poor passing contributed a great deal to their dzfeot. Gray was one of the outstanding players for Gold Hll| and Paher and s.oleinnn for Central Point line-up. (■old Hill eliminated Talent and Prospect in order to gid a chance nt Central Point in the finals. Where Are The Little Change In Condition Republicans In Of Northwest This Precinct NUMBER 45 VEKNON BEAUTIFYING SERVICE STATION Tom Vernon, manager of Vernon’s Service Station has felt the urge of spring. The lovely weather which we have been enjoying has inocu lated him with the spirit of the sea son and as a result he has been busy planting flowers and setting out soufe new shrubbery. Mr. Vernon conducts one of the best known sta tions on the Pacific highway and takes a great deal of pride in his business. SPRING BAND CONCERTS PLAYED BY COLLEGIANS Oregon State Agriculture College, Corvallis, March.—Final plans for the twenty-third annual concert tour of the Oregon State cadet band this year through Southern Oregon and, northern California have been completed. Nine towns included on the itinerary are Roseburg, Glendale, Medford, Ashland, Klamath Fells» Yreka, Fort Jones, Weed and Duns muir. The bond will leave March 21, for the 10-day tour with 45 selected men. The best grades of standard music as well us more popular composi tions given by best concert bands in America are being played. These in clude the heavier overtures, marches and novelty arrangements of popu lar selections. Captain H. L. Board, conductor and “99 graduate of the college, has accompanied, the band on every tour. An eight-piece orchestra consist ing of band members will play for TESLAS HELICOPTER Nikola Tesla, world-famed in ventor of electrical and other de vices, has taken out patents on a heli copter type of flying machine which would have a wing spread of only eight feet and weigh 504) pounds. If workable it would be perhaps the last word in flivver fliers, but lightness and compactness are not the really great virtues claimed for it. The plane would take off vertically instead of horizontally, which means that it could be parked on the roof of a cottage or bungalow and there by obviate the need of using an ex tended landing field. The helicopter idea is not new, but thus far it has not been succes sfully developed along practical lines. Even Tesla has not yet mode a working model. One of the difficulties has been that of requiring a propellor for raising and another for driving the machine which, until Telsa’s inven tion, necessitated cither two engines or a device for gearing the one en gine to two different propellors. The Telsa plan is to use the one engine and one propellor and to change from vertical to horizontal flight while in the air. For landing purposes the plane would be turned back from horizontal to vertical. Seemingly it would be the whole machine and not merely the engines or propellors that would change position.
