TUB GOLD HILL NKWS, JACKSON COUN fY. OREGON THURSDAY. OCTOBER ti. HIT q u e n c y o f m inors. An Independent Newspaper dedicat ed to the betterment of Gold H ill and Jackson County. C. J. Skorb Editor Published •very Thursday evening in Gold H ill. Jackson County, Ore. atcred at the Post O ffice at Gold -J ll, Oregon, for transm ission thru the m ails as second class matter. N o more than one agency com m ission allow ed on any fo r W hile there are few people w ho hold u brief for the person w ho com m its an infraction o f our law s, the m ethods em ployed in the catch ing o f the violators arc oftentim es more sham eful and less principled than the methods used by the law breaker. It is against these m eth ods w hich the average |x*rson rebels. A law enforcem ent o fficer w ho goes out legitim ately and appre hends a law violator and brings him to Justice is usually accorded the support of all peace loving, law abiding citixens but w hen that same officer uses double crossing, under- handed m ethods to obtain h is end then the better elem ent in one's makeup condem ns the officer. e ig n a d v e r t i s i n g . STOOL PIGEON METHODS T he stool Pigeon methods em ploy ed by som e of the law enforcem ent officers o f the state have met w ith rebuffs from those w ho sit in judi cial capacities. In one case in one case in Klamath county, tw o youths w ere fined but one dollar each for sellin g liquor to an Indian w hen the ordinary sentence is tw o years in the state penitentiary. The judge held that the boys w ere co a x ed by an Indian officer to make the sale and then arrested. Another case from the northern end o f the state tells w here tw o lads o f tender years w ere inveigled into sellin g liquor and then placed under arrest and the judge in the case not on ly freed the youths but asked fo r the arrest of the o fficer on a charge of contributing to the d elin A strange ease in law enforcem ent is brought before us in this county. A law enforcem ent officer is in d ict ed for m anslaughter xvhen he shot a violator o f the liquor law s. We cannot condone the unnre- eessary shooting of anyone even by an officer o f the law. No doubt the officer, w hich happened to he Terry Talent in this case, did not intend to kill Zim m erlee but that sam e o fficer has been know n to use a gun upon several other instances against persons xvho w ere not fel ons and w here shooting w a s not necessary. We w ould not w ant to see a law o fficer freed of a serious charge such as the one planted against Talent merely because he w as a law officer. The w orst feature In connection w ith the Talent indictm ent is that law violators w ill become more bold and take greater chances, thereby becom ing more difficult to handle.
