IMPROVEMENTS FOR changed between Audley Eggers, transfer man, and nn unidentified 1926 INDICATE PROSPERITY. Monday of Ibis week a meeting of the owners of (lie Lively Lime Pro ducts Corporation met in Gold Hill and went over the events of the past eight months and made their plans for the coining year’s, (1920.) activi ty at the plunt on Kanes Creek. K. V. Lively, of Portland, J. M. I-lvely and James W. Lively and M S. Johnson, the latter three residents o f Gold Hill, constitute the owners o f this proposition. While James W. Lively is the youngest member o f the organization, he is well train ed in engineering and is directly res|>onsible for the splendid con struction of the plant. He is the largest slock holder in the enter prise and is in personal charge of the operation of the industry both in inanuging the plants and in the inarkrting of the company’s pro ducts. About 915,000.00 was spent nt the plant during the eight months of operation in 1925. Farther Improve ments planned for 1920 will cost about $6,000.00 more. During the period of operation in 1925 the cor poration manufactured nnd shipped about 3,000 bnrrcls of commercial lim»> of n test of 9S.30 calcium car bonate nnd the plans for 1920 esti mate that about 10,000 barrels will be produced. During the past year 3,000 tons of paper rock,(Limestone used by the paper mills In the man ufacture of paper,) and in the com ing year they plan to quarry nnd •sell 10,000 tons. While the indus try received around $20,000.00 in the past eight or ten months for their products of lime nnd paper rock, the plans of the coining year will easily reach the $50,000.00 mark. Even though the industry is in its Infancy in Oregon, nnd found a very up-hill job of getting started, the operation, we understand, showed n nent mnrgin of profit the very first year. As to the future of the industry, there Is no guess work. The result o f the very first season assures the future beyond a doubt. To further augment the usefulness of the Indus try, the news of the additional pro- slucts to be manufactured look very promising. Hydrated lime, Balanc ed I.ime-sulphur Fertilizer, nnd orchard spray are the lenders for immediate exploitation. THB COLD HILL NEWS, JACKSON COUNTY. OREGON THUR8DAY, FEBRUARY 25. 1926. Local Lime Plant Former Speed Cop Shows Progress Shoots A t Burgler The property of the company on Kanes creek, is composed of the old lime plant und quarries well known as the Hughes Quarries. Abandon ing the old type of kiln, the first act of the corporation was the erec tion of a new and modern steel kiln along original lines that are very efficient. Not only is the kiln n new departure from similar furnac es, hut, the loading devise for the economical handling of Pn|»er Itock from the quarry to the trucks for transportation is novel and remark able. Here a story hinges that is interesting to say the least. In the main Hughes quarry, a hole, burrowed out of the bowls of the earth by water centuries post, mak ing a series of renyirkable natural caves, passegeswnys, chambers and aupplied with a rivulet of the most alkaline of lime waters, runs for u distance (explored for only about a quarter of a mile) back into the mountain. *t the opening of this natural caves system a straight drop o f some thirty feel in the formation permits the construction of what quarrymen nnd miners call a ‘glory bole’. Running n tunnel on a level ■with the bottom of this natural pit, the company has provided a means o f loading rock from the quarry into little cars which by gravity haul the rock out of the tunnel to bunkers some four hundred feet, to the road where trucks are londed automatically without waste of time, labor or money. ENERGY 18 THE SOUL OP burglar in the transfer office, where he nttempted to open the safe. The burglar, believed to have been slight lywounded, lied. Eggers’ face and nock were badly )*owder-burned from the only shot fired at him, while he hud fired two shots at the prowler. Last night marked the fourth time the Eggers safe had been tampered with in the past week but no large amounts of money were lost. The burglar had two confederates wait ing outside and wus apparently fam iliar with the premises. Grants Pass Courier. -------- 0-------- Radio Reception ► Now Improving Radio reception in Gold Hill is steudily improving under the con stant efforts of Martin Bowers, C. W. Martin, Lloyd Miller, Floyd Lance aixl others. The interfer ence caused by the Copco power lines is reported whenever any in terference is located and the com pany has always been very prompt to res|M>n<l and apparently is doing all it can to better conditions. A crew of Copco trouble shooters in Gold Hill Tuesday located a nail in behind u light fuse ut Floyd Lances that was nearly burned in two and the noise from which hud been very annoying to several receiving sets. The noise caused by motors, vibrat ors und other electrical appliances can and is being prevented by the installation of condensers that pre vent the static created by the ap pliances from kicking back dnto the lines and thus onto the air. WE HAVE A MESSAGE! 1926 is the greatest year in the history of the valley so far. There is more actual activity in progres sive development on foot in the val ley this season than ever known be fore. Gold Hill is in the swim; making noticable strides ahead, but without a leader. New buildings, active realeatate dealers, enlarge ments in the stock in trade at the stores, new people coming in week ly, new mines organizing and open ing up. Everyone boosting, rush ing to keep up with the other fel low and the whole bunch tearing around in a circle, that is bound to narrow down to a point of certain stagnation sooner or later with the other communities forging a h e a d - eating our pudding while we stand on the side lines looking on. WHERE IS THE COMMERCIAL CLUB? Gold Hill can this season take a place on the highway nuip that is second to none. We have the one and only real gateway to Crater Lake Park because we are the near est, by a route along the shaded banks of beautiful Hogue River, through the heart of the most fertile side of Sams Valley, at a point where Fisbing is the best on the en tire river, where hunting is not bested by any, in the very heart of a world’s supply of undevelopjed natural resources, and already rec ognized as the ‘hub of industry in Oregon.’ Gold Hill can get more results by less effort than any point on the highway system on the Pacific const. We need archwtays over the highway showing the tourists a welcome when they arrive and a hearty farewell when they leave. An urchway that will properly dir ect travel through Sams Valley to the meca of thousands of sight seers annually—Crater Lake. We need one hundred signs that will attract the tourist to Gold Hill and its entertainment and invest- ment possibilities. Its supplies for tourist’s needs, shows, hotels, res- taurants, homes for sale, and sports, and then along Sams Valley road to make the trip convenient and quick. Why can’t we round up the Cham ber of Commerce this spring and get to work? It will cost us all a little but the returns will more than re pay. Let’s Go! Medford, Feb. 20,—Although de prived of a highly efficient working organization by the defeat of the proposed Siskiyou Highway Im provement district at the polls Tuesday, backers of the plan to se cure a road from Williams to the Oregon Caves will go on with their work, it is announced by Robert A. Boyl, secretary of the local Chamber of Commerce. The original plan of building the road through the co-operation of the Jackson and Josephine county courts, with possible state and na tional aid will be followed, said Boyl. The only difference is that there will be no directors to bead the work, as would have been the case had the election carried. “An erroneous impression that they were voting to bond the pro- I>osed district was responsible for the defeat,” declared Boyl. “A pro vision in the law under which we were operating in seeking to form the district permitted bonding, but this was never intended.” To substantiate his belief that the road w ill be built, Boyl pointed out that opponents of the measure were all opposed to bonding, but admit ted the road would be desirable. The Grants Pass paper which fought the formation of the district repeatedly declared the road was needed, but not at the cost of bonding lands, Jo sephine county court, said Boyl, has offered to help complete the road to provide Applegate and Williams val leys with an outlet on the west, and by means of county co-operation, the road will be built. —Courier, — J0»— SAMS VALLEY CUT-OFF FROM PACIFIC HIGHWAY AT GOLD HILL TO NATIONAL PARK IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. By O. S. Blsn'hard, Attorney The cut-off from Gold Hill to the Crater Lake road is absolutely nec essary, logical, and will be of great benefit to the community. It is al ways a distinct advantage to be at the forks of a road. If there is any sensible reason why tourists should not travel the shortest dis tance between two pmrRs, other! conditions being equal, we have never heard of it. A saving of six teen miles means thousands of miles saved each year. Grants Pass citizens quite fre quently use the cut-off, but its condi tion in the past has been bad in wet weather; and the road has been poorly signed in good weather. These conditions are to be remedied, as I understand it, by the construc tion of a market road this spring, and by the posting of signs by the Highway Department. Your splen did community, and the people of Sams Valley are to be congratulat ed upon their determination to fin ish this much needed improvement. With the Redwood Highway in good shape, this cut-off is going to put you on a through line of com- a,unication from San Francisco to Crater Lake, and give you the ad vantage of a junction point. Next week we are going to an nounce the first meeting of the Gold Hill Chamber of Commerce for 1926 If I might be permitted to make a nnd you are all going to be there to suggestion, it would be that Gold help put Gold Hill high and dry “on Hill display promptly along the Top of the World.” ' The business Pacific Highway in Ihe City of Gold man, the lodges, the churches and Hill, neat, conspicuous sign< direct the schools, the private citizen, the ing tourists to take the cut-off.
