Mangrum of G rants P ass on Josephine county. A sim ilar address will be given on Douglas county. On the second day the morning wilt be given up to exhibits and the a w a rd in g jjf prises. LITTLE NEW WORK ON nOADS TO BE DONE I IS Y E m THE FOOL-KILLER Doggedly trudging the livelong day, I asked of each person I m e t: • “ Has the fool-killer recently passed this way?” But the only response I could get Was a sweep of the arm and a jerk of the head, Which seemed, without speech, to contrive A negative answer, as if each had said: “ My neighbors, you see, are alive.” I finally met with an ancient man — A harmless fool, I was told — Who had long outlived the common span, Yet was equally young and old, For his simple soul was an open page Of the book of eternal truth, And his mind was stored with the wisdom of age, While his heart was the heart of youth. “And why do you wish,” said he, “to find This fool-killer whom you seek?” I, answering, said, “I have in mind Some weasands he should tweak.” Then I read from a list I had carefully made Of the fools who still exist— The fools of every different grade Whom the fool-killer seemed to have missed. “But, son,” said he, “is there not some plan, Some educational way Of killing the fool and saving the man For better things some day?” I felt in my haart the sting of shame, And I hung my foolish -head. The original allusion was to a character in Bunyan's Pilgrim ’s Progress, so intent on raking up muck that he could not see a celestial crown held above him. A striking instauee of muck-raking in the true Roose- veltian sense is furnished by the well-meaning hut ex citable (¡old Hill News. Because the local mad super visor was accused of padding payrolls and admitted a shortage in accounts by refunding Jackson county $126.14, the (¡old Hill News asserts that crookedness is not con fined to (¡old Hill but permeates the county court and roadm aster’s office as well. Like Bunyan’s character, the News is so busy raking itc local muck that it fancies the entire county a sea of muck. By a logic all its own, it seektt to extenuate the local sinner by splashing its muck upon others. It is a strange freak of patriotism that, without a vestige of proof to substantiate insinuations, blackens the good name and fair fans' of others, simply because u local patriot was eaught with the goods. Tbe only violations of the law the News is able to allege is that a description o f two Rogue river bridges was not filed with the county clerk after completion and the fact that in a contract Mr. Harmon was referred to as county engineer instead of roadmaster—most serious of fenses, really.
