It is no easy matter to be married
in France, sav« F. Berkeley Smith
in Success Magazine. Ouo great
thing in favor of ao »acred a cere
mony is an event requiring months
of preparation, • of tho signing of
endless papers, the certificates of
birth and the consent of parents,
until at last the wedding day, which
haa been arranged for to the entire
satisfaction of every one concerned,
including the legul authorities, ar
rives. If marriage is difficult, di
vorce is even more so. There are
no such romantic and youthful ad

Duquesne's F irst c ight.
Admiral Duquesne, the famous
French naval hero, wan the son of a
shipbuilder and at the age of seven
teen was placed in command of one
of his father’s vessels. He sallied
forth, espied a Dutch vessel, beard
ed it, compelled it to surrender and
brought it into port. Not until he
had been carried through Jhe streets
in triumph on the shoulders of his
fellow townsmen did it occur to the
officials that France and Holland
were at peace. That fact being ad
mitted, legal proceedings had to fol
low. as the result of which the
youthful captain was warned to be
more careful another time. Riche
lieu, however, heard of his exploit
and, without considering the com
ity of nations, offered him a com
mission in the navy.

Vocation and Avocation.
"Avocation” is one of those un
fortunate words that are constantly
being used in a wrong sense. Strict
ly speaking, it refers to something
that calls a man away from the or
dinary occupation of his daily life.
If you earn your living by drafting
conveyances and interpreting legal
subtleties and also are often seen in
’eisure hours with a camera in your
•land and have a dark room at
home, then the l.nw is your vocation
and photography your avocation.—

A teacher tells me that at a
Rrooklvn school not long since the
:lass in geography was asked,
“What are some of the natural pe
culiarities of Long island?” The
pupils tried to think, and after
awhile a boy raised his hand. “I
know.” said he. “Well, what are
they ?” asked the teacher. “Why,
said the boy. with a triumphant
look, “on the south side you can see
the sea. and on the north side yon
can hear the sound.” —Exchange.

A M atter of Opinion.
“ Mary!”
Father’s voice rolled down the
stairs and into the dim and silent
parlor.
“ Yes, papa, dear!”
“ Ask that young man if he has
the time.”
A moment of silence.
“ Yes; George has his watch with
him.”
“Then ask him what is the time.
“lie savs it-is 11:48, papa.”
“Then ask him if he doesn’t think
it about bedtime.”
Another moment of silence.
“ lie says, papa,” the silvery voice
announced impersonally—“he says
that lie rarely goes to bed before 1,
but it »corns to him that it is a mat- i
ter of personal preference merely
and that if he were in your place he
would go now if he felt sleepy.”—
