A enso in which tens of thousands of farmers in nil parts of tho country nro interested has lately boon decided by tho Supremo Court of the United States, viz : tho "drive-well" patent ensc. It has been over and over again proven that tho first of tlicso wells, which consist of nothing hut a pointed tubo driven down into tho ground, mid worked by an onli. nary pump, was drivon in tho camp of tho GOth N. Y. S. V. in October, 1SG1, of which Col. G recti was tho commanding oillccr. Othor liko wells woro used dur ing nnd tiftcr tho war, utnl one in 1851 in Indcpendonco, I ml., and tho circuit courts in Iown and Indiana held that this uso of tho wells by tho public ron tiered tho patent void. Decisions upon tho samo subject lmvo been reached in New Jorsoy, as well as in Connecticut and Ohio, from which tho present ap peal, jaBt decidod, was taken. Tho Su premo Court now reverses tho lower courts, and holds that tho invention hnd neither been anticipated nor used by othors in a manner to invalidate tho pat ent. Tho mtorosU involved, whilo small in oaoh individual case, nro enormous in tho aggrogato. Tho Indiana suit showed that 60,000 of thoso wells, on each of which $10 royalty was demanded, wcro inueoin that Stnto alono. Ah many moro nro in Iowa, nnd tho number in tho Unitod States has boon placed at botweon 500,000 nnd 1,000,000. With tho prosp'.MJt of paying- this roy alty of from fivo to ten millions of dol lars staring thorn in tho fnco, ono would think that every farmer in tho Nation would at onco unite with an organiza tion liko tho Grango, that for years past has been trying to lmvo our unfair pat ent laws so umonded that tho manufac turer of articles that nro pntcnt infringe ments shall alono bo hold responsible nnd not tho innocent purchaser who pays full prico for tho machine, drive well, or whntover tho nrticlo may be, not knowing of tho patent, or porhnps being assured that tho royalties, etc., havo lieen pnld. If overy farmer was in tho Grango, whero ho bolongs, tho law which pormith thin levying of millions of dollars tux upon armors from timo to timo, of which this drivo well is only ono instnnco of many, would bo stricken from our statutuo books beforo tho ad journment of nnotliorCongic. Farm ere, think on this. Men who think tho Grango lins "died out " or that it has done no good, be tray n degree of ignornnco lamentable to behold, for tho organization was novor moro active, and the good it has dono in incomparably grenter than tho achieve ments of any other association of farm ers in all tho centuries of civilization. Husbandman. Grango moans farm, and tho order of Patrons of Husbandry is n co-operativo society of farmers who proposo to work together, who mean to studiously learn how to work togothor for their own good und tho welfare of mankind. In tho Grange, ns in tho family, woman can lmvo hor say, as in no other public or ganization. Modest, retiring men, too, grown wiso and strong by much com- munion with earth and heaven, will have something to say there. In tho Grange the vory stones of an abused land may cry' out and must bo heard. J. 13. Olcott, Lecturer Connecticut Stnto Grange. "The Bruco and Armada G range, No. G27, continues to prosper. Since the dedication of its now hall by Gov. Luce, the Grango has "received seven applica tions for membership, and scvoral moro are ready to be sent in. A competitive contest has been planned, with a supper at tho other end, and the members are engaging in the contest with a good deal of enthusiasm. The members take hold of this matter nil the more easily from tho fact thot over since th organ! zaliun of this Grango tho rending of papers, original and selected, followed by discussions, has been mi important feature of its meeting. Grango s-wials have beon held throughout tins winter Rt the farmers' homes in tho vicinity, and have been largely attondod by out siders, as well b by members. Alto gether thi! Grango has beon tho princi pal factor in tho social and intellectual lifo of the neighborhood." Patron, Ho mco, Mich. Oak Hill Grango was organized twelve years ago, nnd has over b en a power for good id its vicinity, nobly exemplifying tho principles of tho Order by tho unity nnd harmony that has ever governed nil its business tronsnctioiiB nnd social gath erings j also by tho brotherly love and charity that has always existed among its members. Tho Grange owns n tine hall and store, ono of tho best in tho Stato, and tho past winter the ofTorts of the members lmvo been attendod with moro than usual success. At their Inst rogular meeting twenty-live candidates wcro given the llrst and second degrees, and sovernl other unities promised for membership. This Grango now numbers about one hundred runt twenty, includ ing many wealthy and inlluentiul farm ers of Scnrboro, with their families. Weekly meetings nro held, nnd an inter esting nnd profitnblo programmo pro pared nnd carried out nt ench meeting, a very pleasant feature of which is n paper written nnd edited by tho mem bers of the Order. M. II. Scarboro, .Mniue. Purity, reilnemcnt, morality, brother hood, revcrenco nnd trust pervade tho whole 6ocinl atmosphere of tho Grange, making it an uncongenial resort to tho ditflolntc and abandoned, und n great power to promote the healthful douloi. ment of manhood ond womanhood. Do not forget that cats aro 'very fond of young chicks, ducks and turkeys. Corn thnt is in tho least affected by rust should never bo used. Every farm should havo nt least ono stand of bees. Millions of pounds of honoy go to wnstw annually for wnnt of bees to guther it. It takes oloso personal attention to one's farm to make it pay, nnd it is for tho lack of this that so many farms do not pny. Tho farm will show tho farraor, depend upon it. Tho dosiro for more than one-third or an ounce of salt to tho pound of butter is nn acquired habit of tasto tho ex change of butter-llnvor for tho sharper flavor ol salt. Salt mid vinegar applied hot is said to bo ono of tho best mixtures for denn ing brais, which should afterwards be pohshod with lino nshos. Clean and oil leather bolts without Inking them off their pulloyri. If taken oil' they will shrink ; then n pieco must bo put into them, and removed again after the lelt hns run n few days. Early sown oats will bo tho most cer tain to give bountiful returns. As to tho exact timo for putting in tho seed, overy farmer must bo tho judge, as sea eons and localities diil'er; but, as a rule, put in tho oats just as soon as tho ground will permit of it in tho spring. Early sowing, of course, is not all that is essential to securo n good crop; qual ity of seed nnd fertility of soil are re quisites that cannot bo overlooked. Among eomo old papers sont to tho Austin jail was tho election circular of ono of tho local candidates. Funny Fields, in her " Pmcticnl Tur key Raising" talks, B.iys : Each year keep a number of the very best females to tako tho plnco of tho five-year-old lions that must bo killed J that will givo you n breeding-stock of ono, two, thrco nnd four-year-old lions These future breeders should bo selected early in tho fall boforo you conunenco fattening for market, and should bo maiked so thatthoy will not bo bold or killed "by mistnko." Gor.crnlly spouk ing, it is better to buy n gobbler of somo reliable breeder than it is to keop one of your own raising, as tnrkoys show the evil effects of closo in-brocding sooner thnn any other fowl stock. Somo of tho most prominent breeders of bronzo tnr koys send west ovcry'two or threo yenrs nnd get n wild gobbler to no-in their brcoding-yirJs; consequently thoir tur keys nro kept up to u high standard in pltimngo, sizo and hardiness. A gob bler from tho yards of n breeder who has taken so much trouble to improve Ids stock will cost more thnn ono from "most anybody," but it will bo cheaper in the end. It is often difficult to buy a two-year-old gobbler, so it is better to buy a year ling tho year boforo you send tho old ono to pot, and shut him away from tho hens during tho mating season the first year. Common Turkeys. Finally, upon this subject of breed, let mo s.iy that tho common turkeys, which the "stnndnrd" docs not recogrizo at all, nro not n bnd sort, nhd if you havo or can got soinn good, healthy common turkey hens, muto them with a pure-bred gobblor of ono of tho largor varieties, nnd you need not four tho re sult. Now, do not misundorstand mo on this point of tho "best breed." I do not say or think thnt common turkeys aro "good onough." Nothing of tho kind. What I mean is, that if you cannot afford to buy a thoroughbred flock to start with, do tho noxt best thing which is to get tho thoroughbred mule nnd muto him with tho bost common turkey hens vou can Ret, But in counting the cost of tho thor oughbred flock to start with, you should tako into consideration the fact that if you keep puro stock only, you will prob ably have n chanco to disposo of some of tho best of those that you rniso for considerably moro than tho market price. But when buying n gobblor to muto with common hens, do not mako tho mistake of getting tho biggest ono you can find ; get ono of medium eizo tho first yoar. A largo gobbler ono thnt would bo n fit m.ito for hens of his own brted would bo liable to break down the smaller common turkey hen. About Nests. Of coureo, tho turkoy wanta to hide hor nest ; tho desire is born with her inherited from countless generations of wild ancestors ; but all tho samo you can mnk-3 your turkeys lay about whoro you wait them to, if you go to work the right way. Ono turker-ruiser whom I know keens a closo watch over his tur- k, agal thiil on! thai thoHvholo thing look just as if it hap pened thero. Nino times out of ten the turkey will, if reasonably tamo, tako to these nests without onco suspecting that you liaJ a hand in them. Ai Good aa a U. B. Government Bond. A policy in the .State Insurance Com pany of Salem, Oregon, in caso of nn honest loss, is as good as a U. S. Gov e. ment bond. It has nearly ono quar- (of a million of clean, tint-class avail able assets, all of which is held in this State, for the payment of losses in Or ogon nnd Washington Territory. It has paid losses in near'y every locality in tho Pacific Northwest. Its payments havo been prompt, clem and honest. It issues the best and most liberal policy that ia to-day issued in Oregon. This policy contains no GO or DO days' clause, (which causes n delay of that time in payment of los.es, or a deduction for interest). It i, wo bulmvo. tho only pol. icy issued in Oregon that does not con tain such u clause. It contains no two thirds or throo-fi'iirths clause It prom ises in tho policy to pay tho full loss up to tho amount insured, nnd in caso tho ngrocd or upprnisod loss is less than tho amount insured, it agrees to return tho unearned premium upon tho excess. It is tho only company doing business in Oregon, we believe, that so agrees in its policy. IU officers nnd managers aro from among tho ablest, most successful nnd honorable business mon in this Stnte, and aro well known to our pooplo as such. It (loos not nttompt to build itsotf up by decrying its rivals, but quiotly attends to its own businoss which takes all of its timo profcrring to leave such mothods to tho irresponsible and jealous representatives of cortain rivals, simply saying that thero is not an honorable, honest nnd responsible man or nowspn por in Oregon (which knows anything of its financial condition) that will say or ever has said, but that tho Stato In suranco Company possesses nil thnt it claims to possess, and is n porfectly re sponsible, trustworthy nnd prompt pay ing institution. All of its policies provido thnt in caso thero is any difference of opinion ns to tho amount of any loss, tho matter tuny be left to disinterested nnd competent arbitrators. Tho Stato Insurauco Company pays this year between ono und two thousand dollars taxes in Oregon, and it is the only Firo Insurauco Company doinir business in this Stato thnt pays a dollar taxes in uregon, wiili tho exception only of two othor loonl companies. Theso nro facts that are indisputable, and should convince every intelligent mid reasonable man who is at all inter ested in tho growth und dovelopmontof Oregon mid icliablo Oregon institutions, that it is to his interest to patronize the Stato IiiHiimuco Company in nrcferenco to any nnd nil othors.
