The speed programme is one which will insure the attendance of some fast horses, as purses to the amount of $3,110 will be hung. Tho road will bo pushed rapidly to comple tion, and will bo built as far as possible before the winter sets in. The greatest difllcnlty in tho construction is the Cas cade mountains. These, however, will not bo so hard nor so expcnslvo to cross as was the Coast range. It will bo ne cessary to eonstruct but two tunnels, ono something ovar two hundred nnd tho second over three hundred feet in length. When Bolso City Is reached, tho Or egon Pacific will then bo joined bv tbo westorn extension of the Chicago A Northwestern. This railroad coriwra tlon, iwsBcssod of great capital and en ergy, is rapidly pushing its raid west, an outlot to the Pacific coast having been deemed by it necessary. When the roads are Joined, this will bo tho shortest trans continental lino by 400 miles. The ad vantage which it will possess over Its rival lines by reason of its shorter length will bo easily apparent. Tho contract for tho construction of tho roundhouse at Albany has been let, and tho car shops, which will also bo situated at that point, will bo built in tho near future. Tho past season's traffic of the Oregon Pacific has been eicelally prosperous. Running a through lino from Portland to San Francisco, by .means of steamboat from Portland to Albany, tho railroad to tho ocean, nnd thon by steamer to San Francisco, a vorv lucrative trade has beon obtained. Tho rate per ton from Portland to this clty--$l.B0 has cut so deonly Into tho trade of tho Oregon & California that tho latter corKratlon lms beon forced In self-protection to roduco its ratu to this city to $2.10 per ton.
