The Time to cut Oras Two acres of timothy grass especially uniform in Hinraclcr and growth wero divided into two plots of ono ncro each. Ono lot wns cut in full bloom, and the other was tut about sixteen days later, when tho grass was nppionching ripe ness. Tho grass was carofully curod and the hay weighed whon stored in the barn. After being in tho barn for five or six months, each lot of hay was rc woighod to determine tho amount of "dry" hay from each cutting. Tho avor ago incronscd yield of "dry" hay was 5i(ilbspor acre, whrro tho grass was noarly ripe, ovor tho yield of grass cut in bloom. Tho ncmgo shrinkage in weight of early cut hay was 20 per cent., nnd of the Into cut li) por cent. Tho nvcrago yield por anro in four experi ments of two yoars each wns 2055 lbs of early cut hay nnd 3501 lbs per ncro of late cut hay. But chemical analysis showed that tho increased weight of Into cut hay was duo lo tho growth of starch and woody fibre, as tho nitrogo nous compounds or protoiu, tho most valuablo food clement, had increased nono or but very little. This is a strong argument in favor of early cut hay that is, cut whon in bloom. So truo is is it that tho 2055 lbs of early cut hay wero found to contain a little moro act ual food elements than tho 3501 lbs of lato cut hay. This was at the Pennsyl vania agricultural college.
