Vinegar and Indlceitlon. It is tho business of tho saliva to di gest starch, and by its alkalinity to stim ulate the eccrotions of tho gastrio juico in the rtoinach. It is woll known that the saliva is unablo to act upon starch in tho prcsenco of an acid. Experi ments have- shown that oven so small a quantity of vinegar as ono part in 5000 appreciably diminishes tho action of the saliva upon Btarch. One part in 1000 renders it vory slow, and twico tho latter quantity arrests it altogether. From tins it is evident that vinegar, pickles, salads, and other preparations in which vinegar is used, aro unwhole some, especially when taken with far inaceous food, such as broad and other grain preperations. Thero is a popular notion that by tho use of vinegar a ten dency to incrcaso in flesh may bo antag onized. Tho physiological fact that fat is largely formed from tho starchy ele ments of grain and vegetables, rather supports tho popular notion; but this method of reducing weight should not bo encouraged, as the loss of flesh is secured at tho expense of good diges tion. Try it I The Common Farmer as a Wool Orowor. I do not wondor at tho farmer's fuiliuo as a wool grower, whon wo consider his education upon tho subject. Tho real troublo is, few mon know how to man ago their flocks, or knowing fail to put their knowledgo into practice, If you will obscrvo the treatment of flocks in most C080S, you will think that sheep, liko weeds, will grow without caro or cultivation; and so thoy will and bo nlout"fl8 valuable as weeds. Shoop will livo upon very rough food and onduro a great deal of exposure, and cortainly they get about all thoy can stand of both at thu hands of tho common far mer. Upon tho other hand, no animal will respond inoro freely to kind treat ment and good food than sheop. But neglect seems to bo tho great drawback to tho farmer as n wool grower ; and bo cauSo sheop fail to givo returns undor such trcatmont thoy aro pronounced unworthy. Tho average flecco of wool docs not weigh much over -1 lbs and tho average sheep docs not yield moro than CO lbs of mutton, and that of uu inferior quality. What if by improvement theso fleeces should bo raised to 10 or ovon 8 lbs, and tho growth of mutton to 75 lbs? Tho diflerenco in dollars an'd contain tho farmer's pocket would mnko him look with somo decree of favor upon hi flocks, besides tho ploasuro in knowing ho had dono somothinir in tho way of progression. Improvement is tho otio thing necessary in our tlocks. rot that cvorv farmer should havo all thorough breds. That would not bo profltablo to all; but crndo up the flock by tho solec tion of tho best common ewes and tho purclmso of thoroughbred bucks. A low extra dollars placed in a good buck will bo returned greatly multiplied in tho enhanced valuo of tho lambs. No man can afford to disregard tho quality of tho buck lio uses, juy experience with shoop bus taught mo that thoy aro profltablo. Whoro farmers sizo their tlocks according to their faims and facili ties for caring for thorn, thoy cannot fail to roup rcosonablo rowarus. J. E. McGaughay, Marion county, Ind. Native Doctors and Thrlr Method. Work In thn 1'lchN. Once the difficultly of climate have been surinountcI, lifo in Liberia can lw made cry agreeable. Natives of other countries coming here, whether black or white, havo to make n stand up fight against thu malaria, and onco con querors, if they will, may maintain tolerably good health. Eighteen months passed before I became afTected. Then I suffered from indigestion, followed by fainting flta and extreme lassitude. A treatment based on homoeopathy and hy dropathy brought mo out ull light. I "Look plenty of cxcrclso and had full length tepid baths. My husband was prostrated by tho fever fourteen months after arrival, and ho continued to suffer for about eighteen months. Ho was then persuaded to try n nativo doctor, and after six weeks'. steady adhcrenco to her advico becamo well. Tho prescription included infusion of fovor leaf, pain leaf, Christinas bush, plantain leaf and cossle and herb baths. Tho doctor was n woman of keen intelli gence, alwut GO years of age. Although possessing a thorough knowledge of tho medicinal plants of the country, she was exceedingly niodtst, and desired that wo should not exiHct too much from her skill. Indeed, it it only right to say that modesty nud fulruce) aro characteristics of nativo doctors iw a whole. Many of them show n willingness to treat patients on the principle1 of no cans no ay. Once 1 wna laid up with sovcro inflam mation of the eyes. Another native doc tor, a mnn, was called in. Ho took n piece of water vine, cut It in tho center, and let the Nip flow Into the eyes. It cured them in a few days. All manner of diseases tire treated in thlH simple way, and cures effected In n comparatively short space of time. There is a constant danger in Liberia from vegetablo poison ing, and but for tho knowledgo of anti dotes poswvicd by native doctors, tho loss of life would Iw great. Tho symptoms vary considerably. Somo produco swell ing liko drop-sv, and others instant death. There Isn kind of vegetable poison, which, if applied externally, causes local parol ysls. To guard ngnlnst the malaria, the first story windows of tho houses are kept tightly closodovcry momliiguntil tho sun has dono his wmk of banltatlon. It talcc about two hours to mako things aafe out of doors. During that llmo the ttcam can bo noon rising from the ground. Most foreigners havo )criodlcal attacks of malaria, but I am convinced that their liability to it I duo to lack of caro in eating, bathing, sleeping and exercise. Tho members of my family always kept well after tho first experience. Thoso who work In the Holds begin at about 5 o'clock in the morning ujion a light breakfast of coiTee and bread. The necond breakfast is eaten at 10 o'clock. Operations nro resumed at II for an hour. Between l'J and 2 or !! tho great heat necessitates rest. Thereafter until sun down much Is accomplibhed. No native could bo Induced to exorcise his musclot for at least an hour after each meal. Wo havo fruits and vegetables, flxh and fowls in great abundance, but the supply of fresh lccf is limited. The natives con sider a flsh diet very wholexome. Tin Kroo tribe, which has tho largest, lines! and most industrious men on thu const, subsists, for tho most part, on llsh. Mrs. M. II.
