Wc lmvo heard somo rumors of dam- ngo from frost on lowor lando, nnd tlicro was a rumor that Southern Oregon hnd lost n great deal of fruit by rather sharp frosts occurring in this month, but this is donicd nnd wo shnll hopo for heavy fruit crops from nil, sections of tho coun try. Our own exporionco looks that wny nnd wo bcliovo tlicro lias never boon so much fruit marketed hcrutoforo in any singlo year as will bo sold tho present yonr. Wo lmvo over C000 plums, penr nnd cherry trees londod witli promiso nnd tho snmo must bo tho condition of other soctions. Fruit will Boon figure up n largor profit to Oregon farmers than wheat. Our own orchard costs us not over ono-tenth of its probnblo in cotno to pay for taking caro of it where us wheat loaves only n small surplus of actual profit nnd takes ten acros to re- nlizo what fruit should yield for one. What Congress Old. In San Francisco on tho 25th tho whont mnrket wns excited nnd prices wore nB high ns $1.00 per contnl. for tho 8onnon. Thoro wnB also nnimation in tho barloy market. ArKTn this week wo can promlBo thnt our renders in tho north end of Marion county enn bo cnnblcd to rend this papor on Saturdays instciul of Mondays or Tuesdays as herctolorc. It is intimated thnt tho British Gov ernment would not pormit Canada to enter into rolutioiiH of froo trndo with tho United States. Hesistnnco on tho part of Great Hritain to nuy enlarge mont of tho area of commercial free dom would bo a violation of it own principles and policy. Moreover, when tho pooplo of tho Unitod States nnd Canada shnll want reciprocnl frco trndo thoy will linvo it, whother with or with out tho consout of tho Ilritish Govern mont, Nkhnabka Iiiih fnrnlshod an illustra tion of tho practical valuo of Arbor tiny In thnt State of great prnlries on tho Jlrst Arbor day, fifteen years ngo, 12,- 000,000 shoots wcro planted ; now tho United States Forrest Commission re ports that tlicro nro lino groves growing :100 miles west ef tho Mlmir-Hippi, mid i0.ri,000,000 trees aro thriving whoro a fow yearn ngo none could bo neon snvo tlong tho BT.'iuiiB. Tho observance of troo planting Is a sort of education to many children, who thus leitrn tho nnnu'H and characteristics of trecHjnnd abovo all, it has mi ocoiiomiu importnuco in clothing waste places with valuable timber. Tlioro'n no doubt about it, Arbor day Is a good institution. THE LONQ HAUL QUESTION. Sunday tuainh will bo run on tho O. it C. 11. It. Co.'d lino from Ashland to Portland, on nnd after May 1U This will bo quite an Important and valuable change for the Willamette valloy. This will involve a change in the running time As for instance, the trains that uro at present tormod mail trains will hereafter run (between Albany and Portland) nt about tho usual tinio that tho present express train does, and the Albany express train will run between Kugeno and Portland instead of Leban on and I'oitland on about the time of the proKout mail train. Another good featuie of this change is that it will en- abb us to reach our renders better who live in the northern part of the county, especially lluttoville, Chamoeg, St. I'iuiI, and Firlleld. It will also place our papor in subscribers hands earlier nil up and down the valloy. Tho Intor-Stnto CommiBslon has wisely suspended, for sovcnty-llvo dnys, tho action of tho law ns to tho long hauls on tho Pacific railroads, nnd wo sea it stated that tho old rales will im mediately bo restored on nil tho trans continental ionics. This is n consum mation devoutly to bo wished. Tho railroads havo played their bluff gamo and had their fun, or whatever they call it, and now wo shall get back to first principles. Tho pooplo of Oregon havo had a chanco to learn that they wcro having very low rntcs for overland freights, and tho railroads havo been taught by tho action of Congress that thoy .aro to bo hold under reasonable re straint. Much complaint has boon mndo thnt tho law was a mistake If no clauso had been contained within the Intor Stnto Act to allow of suspending action at tho will of the Commissioners, it would havo been a serious mistako, but it was well guarded and contained claiiBOB to roctify orrors, if thoy wcro found to exist, and ns thoy nro found nnd tho action to suspond tho act is enforced, wo aro all right. Tho pooplo will loso nothing by this act and its re sults must lmvo it beneficial effect. Cor porations aro amonaulo to law, ami no blufling on their part will succcd In hav ing tho law rcpoalod, though it will no doubt bo amended to suit tho circum stances developed and tho needs of tho' country. When tho weather clears up, it will go in with a rush. Full sown grain looks bettor with us than at any time for years past. Wheat ot Shodd is 72 cts., at Albany 77 cts. Why such a diU'orcnco? Noxt year wo all propose to haul our wheat to tho Oregon l'ncitlo Hnilrond, or to tho river. Tho farmers have been cinched by put ting their wheat on tho O. it O. road fer the lust time. If wo can't got within 1J cts. of tho Albany price, we will haul to the river nnd trust to steamboats com peting for business. The railroad company agreed Isst summer to protect the warehouseman at Shedd if ho would keep wheat from going to tho river, and then went back on their contract, and that is what wo complain of." This lettor should havo opjeared Inst week, but Mr. Clarke was hard at work nt the fruit farm, anil it got overlooked. Wo shnll try to put in an appearance at Shedd during the summor, or after fruit harvest is over, which lasts with us until October 1. About ten days ago tho Albany (Linn county) Herald published a statement, upon tho authority of Bomcono who had been in Southern Oregon, that tho fruit crop had been about all killed in this valloy this spring, and tho pooplo wcro greatly discouraged ; that intending set tlers wero being frightenod awny, nnd tho outlook hero is dark and dishearten ing. After drawing as sombor n picturo ns possiblo tho Herald Ingenuously re marked that tho fruit prospect about Albany was oxcollont and pcoplo look ing for homes in a fruit bolt would do well to stop thoro. Wo havo no objec tion to the pcoplo of tho Willamotto ad vortlsing their own country and saying tho host thoy can of it. but wo do oblec', to their reporting falso and injurious statements nbout Southern Oregon in order to boom Wcbfoot at our expense. Tell tho truth about us, gontlomen, and wo shall bo entirely satisfied. Indeed, if you tell tho whota truth you will bo doing ub a great service. Up to this tinio thoro is promiso ot nn abundant fruit crop in tho Ashland or chardspoaches, prunes, plums, cherries, apricota, pears, quinces, applos. Wo havo had somo frosty weather this spring not moro than in tho Willamette, how evernut the treos will bo loaded unless a May freeze-up should hnppon, which our Willamctto friends need not (hopo) apprehend will occur.
