MU8 HARRIOT T. CLARKE, EstTOi
A BIT OF EXPERIENCE.
I have mot with a good many peoplo
In Jogging o'er life's varied way;
I'vo encountered tho clover, the limplo
Tlio crabbed, tho ctravo and tho gray,
I've traveled with boauty, with virtue,
I'vo been with tho ugly, tho bad,
I'vo laughed with the unoa who wero merry,
And wept with tho onci who wero sad.
One thing I have learned in my journoy
Ne'er to judgo one by what ho appears.
The eyes that seem sparkling with laughter
Oft battle to keep back tho tears.
And long sanctimonious faces
Hide often tho souls that are vile;
While the heart that is merry and cheerful
Is often tho freshest from guilo.
And I liavo learned not to look for perfection
In ono of our frail human kind;
In hearts tho most gontlo and loving,
Some blemish of fault wo can find.
But yot I havo no'er found the crcaturo
So low, so doprayed, or so mean,
But had aomo good Impulio aomo virtuo
That 'mong his bad traits might be seen,
And, too, I've learned that most friendships
We make, nro brittle as glass,
Jnst let a reverso overtake us
Our "friends" on the 'othorsldo"pass,
But, aht I havo found somo fow loyal
Some hearts ovor loving and truo 1
And the joy and peaco thoy havo brought
me,
Havo chcerod mo my whole journoy thro'

Value or tho Apron.
If thoro can bo found ono reason why
a woman can succeed hotter with Jowls
than a mnn it is becauso sho woars an
apron. Sho goes out to feed tho fowls
and in tho apron sho carries tho grain,
in it sho brings back tho eggs; a chick
en is sick and needs doctoring, tho apron
is pinned around its nock lest it cscnpo
while tho doso is being administered.
Sho goos out to tho nest of a setting
hon, finds a lot of chicks and into tho
apron thoy go. A strango hen gets into
tho yard ; a man will shoo in vain, but
ono shako of that apron and out goon
tho hon. Women who advocato mascu
line apparel for women most certainly
nover raised chickons or thoy would bo
glad enough to wear tho dresses just for
tho sake of tho aprons. Agriculturist.
Mr. Beecaer on Dancing.
People ask mo frequently, "Do you
think that thero is any harm in danc
ing?" Xo, I do not. Thero is much
good in it. "Do you, then, object to
dancing parties!" Xo ; in themselves, I
do not. But where unknit youth, un
ripe muscle, unsettled and unbardened
nerve, nro put through an excess of ex
citement, treated with stimulants, fed
irregularly nnd with unwholesome food,
surrounded with gayety which is exces
sive, and which is protracted through
hours when they should be asleep. I
object, not becanso of the dancing, but
WILLAMETTE FARMER; SALEM, OREGON
because of tho dissipation. It is taking
tho timo that unquestionably was in
tendod for Bleep, and sponding it in tho
highest stato of oxhilcration nnd excite
ment. Tho harm is not in tho dancing
itself; for if thoy danced as do tho
peasants, in tho open nir, upon tho grass
undor tho trees, and in tho day, it
might bo commended, not as virtuous,
but still as belonging to tlioso nogativo
things that may bo beautiful. But tho
wassail in tho night, tho wastefulness
I will not say of precious hours, for
hours nro not hnlf so precious ns corves
aro tho dissipation, continued night
after night, and week af tor week through
tho wholo season, it is this I doprccato
as oating out tho very life I am not
suporstitious of observances, but I am
nm always thankful that thero aro forty
days of Lent in tho year, when folks
can rost from their debauches and dis
sipations; when no round of execssivo
excitement in tho pursuit of ploasuro is
pormittcd to como in and ruin tho health
nnd oripplo tho nntural powers of tho
young. Amorican Mngazino.

KEA8URIHO THE BABY.
Wo moasurod tho riotous baby
Against tho cottago wall,
A lily grew at tho threshold,
And tho baby was just as tall,
A royal tigor lily,
With spots of purplo and gold,
And tho heart of a jowelrd chalico
Tho fragrant dew to hold.
Without tho blue-birds whittled
High up in tho old roof trees,
And to aud fro at tho window
Tho red rose rocked her bees;
And tho wee pink fist of tho baby
Wero nover ft moment still,
Snapping at shine and shadow
That danced at tho lattice sill.
Ilia oyes wero wide as bluobolls,
Ills mouth liko a flower unblown;
Two little bare feet, liko funny white mlco
Peeped out from his snowy gown ;
And we thought with a thrill of rapturo,
That yet had a thrill of pain.
When Juno rolls around with the roses
Wo'll measure the boy apain.
Ah, mel in a darkened chamber,
With tho sunshine shut away,
Through tears that foil like a bitter rain
We measured tho boy to-day;
And tho littlo baro feet that wero dimpled
And sweet as a budding roto,
Lay side by side togethor,
In the hush of a long roposo.
Up from tho dainty pillow,
Whito as tho risen dawn,
Tho fair littlo face lay smiling,
With tho light of heaven thereon;
And tho dear littlo hands like roso leaves
Dropped from a roso, lay still,
Never to catch the sunshine
That crept to the shrouded sill.
Wo measured tho sleeping baby
With ribbons whito as snow,
For tho shipping roiewood casket
That waited him below ;
And out of the darkened clumber
Wo wont with a childish moan;
To tho height of tho sinless angola
Our littlo ono had grown.

Wo heard a mother not long ngo say

Charloy lives in Eastern Orogon. Ho
tells of tho horso thoy use, which is
twonty years old. Now wo nro suro
that horso has had a kind ownor, who
fed and watered him regularly, and who
did not ovor work him, and who kept
him from oxposuro to cold nnd wot.
Tho horso is man's roost usoful friond,
yot soo how dreadfully ho is abused and
mistroatod. About eight years is tho
avorago ngo of n horse now, whilo thoy
would bo strong and usoful for twonty
years, with merciful enro. Charley doos
not writo a very long letter, but man
ages to say a good deal in a small spaco.
That is ono of tho socrots of being a
good letter-writer. So Chnrloy must
keep writing. Wo nro suro his sharp
eye will seo something to tell about.
Helping mothor wijw dishce is just what

Our constant friend, Floronco May,

count her as ono of the best frionds of
tho Circle And so Lizzie is married 1
Wo had not thought her to bo old
enough to go so far away from horn
and loving family. Wo hopo aho will
not miss tho dear sister left behind.
This is a very iniortant event in a
young girl's life, und it is too often that
marriago conies without proper reflec
tion. Taking this step beforo proper
ago and maturity, then coma sickness,
hard work, and often prematura death.
Young girls should not bo in too groat
hasto to leave homo, and to take caro
and responsibility upon themselves
Wo hopo Florence will find as much
comfort in her flowers as wo do. But if
sho cannot keep tho chickens out of it,
thero will bo many a heart acho beforo
