April continues to furnish us n buo cession of not very warm showers unit vomo protracted mins, with oocitsional frosts that havn done moro or less harm. So fur, wo havo not luut n warm, gonial, spring day. Wo romombor to havo seen utrnwlxirricH fully riin) (ho last days of April, and thiti year they nro only in Moom. All things aro backward, and tb rains ennro tho fall wheat to grow so vigorously that it may result in moro draw than wheat. But tho pioiuinu for crops of all kinds, fall and spring sow ings of wheat and othor grain, could hardly bo moro satisfactory. Tho heavy body of huow lying on tho mountains no doubt has its effect on tho present eousou, und makes tho spring Into. If tho rains koop on through May and Juno suIUelont to sustain tho grow ing crops, wo need not complain of tho lata spring. So far ns wo know, Eastern Oregon also lint h favorable spring sea eon, and crop prospocta aro oxcollont. California has had rains that insure something of a crop, but thoy camo a mouth too Into for actual success to tho harvest of 'S7, and their conduct in vai ious ways shows that people thoro who mderstand tho country do not estimate tho coining grain yield at moro than one-halt a full crop. Chicago and San Francifco havo each indulged in a wheat "corner," and specu lation has put wheat up in both placed. Tho .Chicago bubblo burst, and let somo in for heavy lossea. San Francisco ope rators claim that thoro U not over 100,. 000 tons of wheat in tho SUto to ship at tho proaont time, and as tho operator! havo bet on tho amount of 200,000 tons, it was not possible to deliver so much, thoroforo the price was shoved up to a ficticious figure, and gamblors had to pay their differences. Thoso gambling deals, or "corners," givo no true indica tion of tho actual market. A short crop in California will have a gopd effect on tho Oregon market, as wo can probably havo cheap tonnago and plenty of it. If they cannot oporato on California wheat they will turn thoir at tention to ours, and tho San Francisco market will strengthen our own. All things considered, Oregon farmers may havo confidence in a better condi tion of things in their favor during tho prost year than for somo timo time past. Whilo tho prospect of nn European war grows faint, there is a prospect that without any such calamity as war to help us, wo Bhall havo a fair market for products of all kinds. Salem mills aro pnying-7Gc per buMiel for wheat, whilst in Portland quotations rango about tho eamo as heretofore Tho situation in Chicago, Now York, and San FrancUco is slightly improved. Local markets aro ns follows : Eggs, 10c; butter, 2225c i potatoos aro lower than last week ; hay, $1920, and as high Jir $21 for a choico article. Chiokons havo advanced GOo a dozen, and turkeys aro selling roadily. We quoto: Chickens, $31.50; turkoya 12 llc; ducks and geeso, $50 and $G Provisions. Arrivala of outsido local aro light, whilo thoso of eastern meats havo not boon important. Stocks aro ample, but aro held with confidence, and with a fair request tho market rulos firm. Dacon slightly better. Sell ing valued from dealers nro: Choico city or country hams U12Jc, bacon 10 lie, shoulders G($7c, eastern huniB lllUc, boat local or eastern lard 99Jc. Dried fruits nro in good request and firm market. Stocks running low, somo sorts being nlmost cleaned up. Soiling prices from dcalors aro: Suudricd apples 78cls. ; sliced 8oQl0cta.j factory lOcgllcts. ; bleach ed llc12J cts. Prunes 10c12 cts. ; Fronch 8 cts. Tallow 3 HJo for common. Mark Lane Renew. London, Apr. 19. Tho Mark Lano Express, in its tcviow of tho British grain trado during tho past week, says : "Doliverios of native whaat has been re stricted. Tho remainder of tho crop on hand line now supposed to bo small and values nro hardoning. Sales of English whoat during tho week will reach 80, 9G7 qdarlcrs at 30s tOd, against 49,051 quartors at 80s lOd during tho corres ponding period last yonr. Foreign wheat is firmer, although inquiry is in active. In Livorpool tho market prices nro Id higher. Quotations of wheat car goes on passngo aro nominal. To-day wheat is quiet but steady, and prices aro rather against buyers. Flour is steady.
