Wo tnko tku following from tlio S.in Francisco Alia, of ft Into (Into. It will bo read with interest by all who nro keeping sheep : "In rcBponso to na advertised call, a Inrgo nrnnbor of merchants intcrcBted in tho handling of wool, met nt tho rooms of tho Board of Trndo yesterday to consider tho qtication of excessive freight rates on wool overland from Cal ifornia. Isnac llecht prosidrd, and Gardner Boll acted ob Secretary. John II. Wise, in stating tho object of tho meeting, said that ho had called upon Mr. Stubbs, of tho Soulhonn Pa cific to soo if tho wool dealers could not obtain a better rnto than 3.70 per hun dred, and If pos'Iblo tho 02J rate en joyed during tho past six months or bo. "Mr. Stubbs told me," said Mr. Wiso, "that tho railroads couldn't touch tho question, under tho ponaltios of tho Inter-State Commerco law. Mr. Stubbs thought it would bo b pood idea fur tho wool men to get together and endeavor to porBiindo tho CommissionorH tb sus pend Bcction four of tho Act, bo lur as tho wool industry of this coast is con cerned. By tho operation of that law, tho wool industry of this coast is moro affected than any olhor. On fruit tho railroad can mako n low through rnto, and yot not afreet local rates. Tho fnut is grown in this State, and nono of it is picked up in tho territories. Our wheat goes by water, so that is nut afl'ected ; but all thcso territories nnd Statns bo tween hero and thn Atlantic seaboard grow wool, and tho milroads have made n high rato to protect thcimolvcs. Sup poflo (52J cents should bo tho through rato; then that would bo tho rnto on all tho wool picked up on tho oaBt-bound trip. Thoy hnvo fixed tho high rato to protect thoir local rato. Wo have wator transportation, but tho stenmors havo, as n rulo, combined with tho railroads, thus loaving only tho long trip around tho Horn, which involves four months' time, with tho result that our wool ronohoB tho market after tho western wool has arrived and mado tho markot. Wo need tho railroad for tho snko of speed. "Senator Stanford says tho long and short haul shall bo suspended, to allow tho roads to compete for tho trado of tho Oriont and tho islands of tho l'aci fie. What wo need to do is to mako an appoal to tho Inter-Stato Commission ers. Mr. Stubbs assures mo that if wo succeed in having tho section suspend ed so fur as wool is concerned, tho rail road will Heoond our ellbrts, nd mako a satisfactory rate. If tho prcsont rates aro to bo maintained, it will plnco on tho spring clip n tax of SfiOO.OOO, a dead loss to tho producer. Taking our an nual product of 515.000 0n founds, tho i ' tin, ...too i d niu nit o a loss of .fl.OOO.uOO, which tho wool moil will liuvo to stand. Tlmro is no reason why tlni obnoxious section should bo sus pended in favor of tho Southern States, llUtt WO 1)0 4011 Ollllll lilt) uuiii. ami iiiiv was never intondod to so operate Con gressmen continually busy themsolves to preserve n protoctivo mrltl' for our wool industry, and yet they havo passed u luw affecting us moro sorlously than any infraction of tho tarill' could do. Wo ought to appoint a cominitko to tel egraph or otherwise (million tho Com missioners to grant us tho reliof wo need." GlmrloB Schilling said that the Union Pud Ho people had informed him that the Sunset route is the only one that is not nHVctod by tho Inter-Stato Com merco Act, anil can take freight at any price. Mr, Wiflo Any road can take freight at any price it wishes, provided it does ii.a euro to protect its local freights. 1 1111 sunset route is just as much con tiollud by the Act as any road. Mr. Schilling Well, I giio's tho rail nuda want tho high rates. Mr. Wise I don't think so. When I hear such men us Senator Stanford and Mr. Stubbs say that they iro willing to mako 11 reduction, I boliovo they mean what thoy say, and are in earnest. Isaac llecht was confident that under tho operation of tho net, tho wool-growing interest would bo killed, unless low freight rates can bo obtained. "Today," said he, "the agent of tho Canadian Pti emtio to me and said that his company would take any wool, ready for the Bteamor next Friday, nt 12.25, as against tho ?3.8f rate charged by tho Amoricau roads." Mr. llecht thought it a hard ship if foreign roads nro to be allowed to take freight from the home roads. John II. Wise Heretofore wo have brought wool from Oregon, Washington Territory and Arizona to this city, but with tho !1.85 nnd $11.70 rates wo can not handle u pound of this wool, and all that trado will bo drawn from San l'ran cisco. It. P. Parks thought it was a little preuuturo. to jKJtitkm tho Inter-Stato Commissioners before tho railroad had definitely fixed it rato to bo in force if the long and short haul provision was suspended. , Mr. Wiso I naked Mr. Stubbs this morning what would bo tho rato if tho t ection was suspended, uud I told him tho Pacific Mail offers to tako wool at two ccnta per pound. Mr. Stubbs could not say off-hand just what tho rato would be, but it probably would not bo moro than two cents and perhaps not so much. I say it is tho duty of tho Com niicBioncra to consider questions affect ing foreign trade. I believo thoy will givo us a willing ear. Isaac Harris thought it would bo well not to clnsify flocced wool, nnd to make a uniform rate on groasod wool. Mr. Wiso moved that tho chair ap point a committer of five to communi cate with the Inter-Stato Commission by mail or tolegrnph, asking thnt section i of the law bo suspendod so far as wool ib concerned. Tho motion was finally carried unaa imouslv. and tho commilteo was in structed to wait upon tho agents of tho Southorn Pacific, Canadian Pacific, Atchlsqn, Topeka. & 8anta Fc, and Pa cific Mail, to bco what rates could bo obtained, and tlion telegraph a petition to tho Inter-Stato Commission, andf fol low up tho tolegram with mail advices. Tho following gontlcmon woro appoint ed: J. H. Wise, J. P. Hulmo, J. E. Shoobort, Eugeno Avy, R. F. Parks. Tho com 111 it too organized by electing Mr. Wiso chairman, nnd to-day will wait upon tho various railroad representa tives, and to-morrow will bodu a tolo grum to tho Intor-Stnto Commission." Annual Dairy Exhibit. At tho Mnroh meeting of tho North west Const Dairy Association it was de cided to hold an exhibition of dairy pro ducts, oventunlly in connection with tho domestic and fat stock show next fall. A committco was appointed to confer with tho Stock Show Association, and on Thursday last hold a joint mooting with a committco of tho latter association, at Koodvillo. Tho Stock Show Association ofi'ored to croct a duitablo building 'for tho exhibit, but left for tho Dairy Asso ciation to manngo tho exhibition and oiler itn own premiums. This proposal was accepted. In order to insuro n jutt nnd impartial decision by tho judges, nnd to afford as much instruction to tho butter makers and tho public us possiblo, n now pro cedure was decided upon. The butter mutt bo exhibited in pnekngos of uni form size and shapo, and each pnekngo will bo marked in such n mnnnor thnt the judges will not know whoso butter they are examining till uftor the premi ums havo boon awarded. Tho uuttcr will thus stand or fall sololy on its own merits. Furthormoro, tho judges will bo roquirod to supplomont their decision by jotting down on n sheet of pnpor at tached to ouch sample tho merits and demerits of tho same. It was decided to offer four sorics of premiums for butter, ns follows : First nromiumi $25, second premium, $15, 'and third premium $5 ; $5 for twenty- fivo pounds of fresh butter mado in dairies of not less than twenty cows. Premiums of the sntuo amounts for ten pounds of frosh buttor mado in dairies of loss than twenty cows. Tho snmo pre miums for twonty-fivo pounds of packed buttor nt least four months old tundo in largo dairies as nbovo and samo premi ums for ton pounds of packed butter mado tu small dairies. Similar premiums will bo ofi'ored for full milk chocso. Marbled Beef. Animals which have not boon liberally fed whilo young nnd growing will uovor yield tho Bnmo quantity of marbled te, no matter how much caro may bo taken tu fatten them when grown, as those which havo boon well fed from tho beginning. In short, to produco tho host quality of beof, tho cellular tissues of tho muscle must bo developed along with tho growth of tho animal by abun dant food. Tho characteristic of n high quality of boot aro hriolly as follows : If lean, the surface of tho beef is of uni form redness when cut across tho grain j but fat deposited within tho niusclo will bo Indicated by whitish colored points which nro layers of fat around and among tho bundles of muscular fibers. Thoso indications nro more or 1uch fittingly marked according to tho amount of fat deposited, and whou tho amount i considerable tho lean meat looks as if overlaid with n network of fat. Meat thus stroakod with fat is termed marbled. Don't Kick Your Animals. Yoars ngo, in our old Vormont home, it was thought very Improper, ungeutlo mauly nnd ill-bred to kick an nnimnl. Now-a-days it scorns to bo quite tho fashion, nnd wo not only hear of tho rough, ill-bred man kicking his horse, cow or dog, but tho society gentleman serves his poor dumb brutrs the samo. A man who has compassion on his ani mals says that ho wishes to heaven that spocoli might bo given to thoso poor, unfortunate creatures, which aro doomed to kar tho ill-humor of their owners, that thoy, liko Balaam's ass, might cry out, "what havo I dono unto thoo that thou hast smitten (kickod) mo theso many times." If thoro is any ono thing in this world that should receive tho bitter, lasting condemnation of mankind, it is thopracticoof kicking our domestic animals. It is always dono in tho heat of passion, aud thoso who eo far forgot themselves as to lift thoir foot to a cow or othor animal should thoroughly hato thomsolvos for doing it. Another political bnttlo has been fought another pago added to Ameri can history a page that wo fear tho farmers of this nation will feol ashamed of after tho excitement of tho campaign is over and tho smoke of bnttlo has been lifted. As in tho past, in nlmost every instance, whoro farmers havo been nom inated us candidates for official position thoy havo been dofcatcd by lawyers and tho next Congress will bo composed of tho samo kind of material ns tho Inst. Wo have a fair illustration in this (tho Eighth) Congressional district, of tho moans that wero used to dofeat farmer and labor candidates. Ono of tho old parties nominating a lawyer, a profes sional politician, long beforo tho nom inating convention was hold it was plain thnt ho would roccivo tho nomlnniinn for tho reason thnt ho was backed by u powerful ring, and ono of the lnimst manufacturing establishments in um State. Tho dissatisfaction was so ureal that an independent movemout wns i- gantzed that nomlnalou a tanner. J.110 result of tho convention was hardly mado known beforo tho llood-gatcs of political wrath wero thrown opon and tho slandor inventivo genius of all tho imps of hell wero used to defeat tho far mor candidate. His oppononts laid groat stress on tho fact that he was only a farmor, and thcrcforo ho would havo no influonco in Congress. Thoy could bring nothing against his character, not oven claiming that ho had not tho ability to represent his constituency on tho floors of Congioss ; but being n far mor ho would havo no influonce. Tho c. 0. T). brought into this Congressional district twenty-six Bpcakors, most of thorn of national ronuto, niuotccn of thorn law yers.
