This corn was raised about ten miles west of Tho Dallos, on high table land, without irrigation, was planted about tho 8th of May, 1880, and was tho product of tho dryost soason known in Eastern Oregon during tho past twenty five years. For tho country that makes but little calculation on its corn crop this is a good showing. Bees do not work as well in a hivo ox posed to tho sun. In midday, when very hot all work on tho inside, such as comb building and storing honey, has to bo suspended. Sometimes combs melt down, and the brood dies in tho heat of the sun. Harrowlsf Grain In the Mud. It is generally poor policy to work land when it is wet, but this, liko all rules, has its exception. Wherever hardy Spring grain, especially wheat, is sown it is tho common practice to Fall plow and then sow on tbe muddy surface as soon as it is thawed sufficiently to bo harrowed in. The ground is sown while still frozen beneath, for if tho farmer waited until frost was all out it would miro his teams, and ho might wait days or even weeks for the soil to settle enough to bo worked. Somotimes all harrowing is omitted, and the grain is covered only by rains which wash loose earth over it. But the surfaco thus bar rowed wben wet does not bake and be come hard as it would later in the sea son. It generally freezes two or thrco times after the seeding, and thus keeps the surface loose and friable. , Sprtna Pastures. It in poor policy to suffer the cattle to feed in tho pastures until tho grass has got a good headway, becauso tin tramping of tho tender grass into tho soft soil will retard its growth during tho whole season. Oar presont pasture cannot stand as early feeding ns used to bo tho caso on tho prairies. To them tho native sod was lough and lmrd, tho surfaco was solid and firm ; but it is not so with our tamo pastures in early spring. Tho sward never bocomce as firm as on tho prairies. It is truo tho ground dries out rapidly, but nevertheless stock should not bo turned into tho fields bo foro tho first wcok in May. In somo soasons even that is too early. Hoop ing stock off tho pasture lands for a week or two at the beginning of tho sea son will greatly aid them throughout tho ontiro season.
