Willamette farmer: salem, Oregon, april 8, 17 "r't , m It. orfitnllnriL late Cabbage. Tho following is tho rule for raising Into cabbage, ns given to tho Amori can Cn1tivfttor,by W. D. Philbrick. It is for Into cabbages as grown for tho Boston market, and will bo found to bo very interesting reading: Tho culturo of lato cabbages diffors from that reebntly described in theso columnB for earfy cabbages in several; important particulars. In tho first placo, thcro being timo enough to grow tho crop, wo aro not obliged to force it bo much by applying hoavy doses of nitrogenous manures. Then tho timo of sowing ecod, tho va rieties of seed used and tho method of growing plants aro qulto different, and again tho land chosen is usnally such as has been recently broken from grass and rather stiff, strong land, whilo oarly cabbages roquiro land that has bcon several years worked, and is rather mel low and light. To supply tho mnrkct during tho latter part of July and August tho plants must bo started under glass, much tho samo as previously doscribed for early cabbagos, oxcopt that tho scod may bo Bown n month later, say March JL6, and if sown quito thinly and well airod, tho plants will hardly need transplanting till thoy go to tho field oarly in May. For this intermediate crop tho Fottlor'u Improved Drumhead is tho bost variety, and tho land should bu rnndo almont as rich as for early cabbages, with say ton or fifteen cords per ncro of good ma nure. To follow this crop, seed of tho samo varioty is sown(in tho open ground ns soon ns tho land will work mullow in April, putting it in with a machino in rowB fifteen inches apart, and transplant ing about May IS or 20 to tho Hold. Thoro is usually some troublo in grow ing plants so early as this in tho open air, on account of tho attacks of tho small lion, beetle. This may bo kept off by frequent sprinkling of tho plants with water, thrco or four times a day, until thoy get thrco or four leaves, whon thoy'wlll usually outgrow tho fleas. Some writers also ndvieo applying Paris green to kill this insect, but tho writer has never tried it. This planting, hav ing morn timo to grow, will hardly re qniro so much manure, Ray ten or twolvo cords per aero. .This planting will bo sold mostly in Soptembor. To supply tho markot in October, November, and through tho Winter, seed of tho Stono Mason Drumhead and curled Savoy vanties is sown at different times from May 1 to Juno 6, so as to navo a Biiccr'sion of plants ready to set whenovcr the land can bo mado ready, and to keep ri supply of cabbages in market. Tho largo, lato Drumhoad varitics Bhould havo plenty of room to spread, making tho rows 3 feot apart, whilo setting tho plants 2J feet will bo obout right, Tho Savoys and tho Fottlcrs will bear setting 3x2 feet. After cabbago plants aro sot out tho chief point is to keep thorn growing by freqiuiut uso (if plow and cultivator and hoe, stirring the ground after ovcry rain and permitting no needs to grow. If tho mnggoUi attack them, as they often do in May, tho witer knows no romedv but tho ono given before, namoly, to rub I oil tho eggs iron) tho stumps boloro thoy hatch, which wi!l bo effectual if dono early and often enough. Tho eggs aro so small as to bo hardly visible to tho naked eye, and aro laid early in May. Tho greon worm larva of tho white but terfly (picris rapco) is very often trouble some with lato cabbages. Thoy may bo killod when tho cabbago plants aro small by Paris groen, but- it is hardly safo to ufo this on cabbages for a month beforo thoy aro usod for tho table. If kept down carefully early in tho season thoy 6eldom do much harm later. Where only a lew cabuages are grown for the tablo this worm may be killed by pouring on hot water about ICOdeg. to 170deg., temperature with a sprinkler. Salt water, also, skrinklcd on tho plants is said to kill them, bat the writer has novor usod it, and would fear that much of it would damage tho plant, though tho cabbago will bear some salt. In warm woathcr cabbages should bo cut as soon as they head up or they will quickly burst and decay. If the market be dull thoy may be kept back a littlo by starting them up by tho roots slight ly. If they wilt a little it will not spoil them. That portion of the crop inten ded for Winter sale is taken up just be fore the ground freezes in November, and after stripping tho out side leaves off is plenty in a dry and sheltered spot in a bed mado by setting out the cab bages as thick as they will stand in the furrow of a one-horse plow, then cover ing tho roots with the plow, which makes another furrow to be filled with cab-' bagea. After planting, bank the bed aronnd with a shovel, as high as the cab bage beads, and cover with leave, thatch, eel grass or other convenient covering, putting on just enough to ex clude bard frosts from the stamps. A little frost on top will do no barm, and is better than covering too much, which will make them beat and rot. Cab bages stored thus can be taken oat at any time in Wintcr-or Spring, and In cool eather keep well. There aro a good many cabbages grown now for Winter market by for mers at n.distanco from market Thoy often come into Boston by tho carload frrm Portland and Montreal, whenever the prico will warrant Bonding them. Farmers in tho back country aro fast learning that thcro is no crop grown which contains so much food for .man or beast per acre as the cabbage, and whoro land and manuro aro plenty it pays well to grow them for cows. When tho city markctfenro Rood thoy pay bol ter for feeding men, of course. Tho prices of Wintor cabbago havo of lato years ruled low in general, $15 to $20 per ton being about tho limit: but when we consider that a good crop of cabbago weighs from twenty to forty tons, it will be seen that it amounts to something. Cabbagos draw heavily upon tho for tuity of tho soil, and cannot bo shipped away without impoverishing tho land, unless tho fertility is replaced by pur chased manuro. Upon land recently broken from sod, however, thoy will thrive on commercial fertilizers, which should contain a liberal proportion of both potash and ammonia, as well as somo phosphoric acid. Somo land how ever, contain potash enough to grow them withont any application whatever. Cabbago cannot bo grown on most lands for two years in succession wittrout suff ering from club root, a fangus discaso, nor can it follow turnips for tho samo reason. Largs Potatoes and Many la a HUL In plowing in a proper .manner, tho land for potatoes needs attention. Tiio first thing is thought, deep plowing, not loss than twelve inches dcop. If tho, soil is not naturally rich and productive it should be mado so by inanurc,'or other moans such as skillful cultivators of tho soil aro familiar with, riant oarly ; pat tho bcoiI potato at least six inches below tho surfaco of tho ground. I never cat in pieces seed potatoes. I plant from twonty-flvo to thirty-flvo bushels to tho ncro. I plnnt in drills if tho potatoes aro very largo. It takes thirty-thrco to thirty-iivo bushels to plant an acre. Smaller ones go further in planting, and as hko produces liko tho crop will bo, liko its kind. Tho very best is best for seed, and tho best timo to Bolccttho seed potatoes is whon digging tho crop. I solect a fow of tho best from each hill. I harrow tho ground quito thoroughly before, or about tho timo tho tops mako thoir appcaranco and contlnuo to culti vate, keeping tho woeds down until tho potato blossom appears, then stop leav ing tho land as near level as possible This manner of raising potatoes gives tho best quality and greatest quantity. Good yielding varieties in good soil yield from six hundred to ono thousand bushels per aero. Many persons think that to plant wholo potatoes, of larco size will produco too many stalks, but experionco is tho best tost. It is well to begin with choico varieties, for tho rea son that timo is rcquirod for develop ment and gaining perfection, and many potatoes growers got weary in ono year's oxperienco and say thoy would just ns soon havo tho inferior for tho seed as tho very bost. And tho very bad practico of cutting potatoes for seou is n great mis tuko; moro especially tho cutting of those intended to produco seed. In all othor crops ovcry plantor agrcos that tho best is only good enough for seed, which is true, and just as truo in regard to tho potato as in other crops. A SnscesUon to the Traveling Public. Touri'tr, emigrant and mariiirrs find that Hostotcer's Stomach Bitter it a medicinal safeguard against unhealthy influence!, upon which they can implicitly- rely, since It pro. vents the effects of vitiated atmosphere, un- accuitouud or unwholesome diet, bad water or other conditions unfavorable to health. On long voyages, or journeys in latitudes adja cent to the equator, it is especially useful a a preventative of the ferblfe complaints and disorders of the stomach, liver and bowels, which are apt to attack natives ot the temper ate rone sojourning or traveling in such re gions, aud It is an ezellent protection against the Influence of extreme cold, sudden chances of temperature, exposure to damp or extreme fatigue. It not only prevents intermittent and remittent fever, and other diseases ot a malarial type, but eradicates them, a fact which has been notorious for years past in North and South America, IJexico, the West Indies, Australia and other countries. Mrs. Phtcbo Chetley, Peterson, Clay Co., Iowa, tells the following remarkable story, the truth of which is vonohed for by tho res. idtnts of, the town: "I am 73 years old, have been troubled with kMney complaint and lameness for many years) could not dress myself without help. Now I am free from all pain and soreness, and am able to do all my own housework. I owo my thanks to Klectrlo Dittora for having renewod my youth, and removed completely all diieus and pain." Try a bottlo, only 60o at the Port Drug Co. 4 Thcro is bono meal and ground bono in tho market, tho former being ground tho finer of tho two, and is sold at a prico that renders it a very cheap and oxcollcnt ingredient to mix with tho soft food for tho fowls. Tho fowls aro qulto fond of it and gonorally cat it with a relish that often surprises tho koopcr, for oven tho largo pieces of bono as large as a kernel of corn and . oven larger, aro eagerly dovonred by tho lay ing hons. This ingrediont in tho poultry food materially assists, not only in tho pro duction of oggs, but also in building up a aood strong framo tor tho breeding stock, and this largo strong frame is al ways desirablo to have, both for brood ing and market purposes. llono meal is also an oxccllent thing for tho young, growing chicks, and Ib just what thoy need to build up a largo fiamo and strong constitution, and of courso without good health and strongth thcro is no breed that can bo mado to yield satisfactory roturns to their keopor. Now, tho keeper should not neglect this matter and let it pass by without notice, hut as Boon as the clucks mako thoir appcaranco ho should keep this articlo of diet beforo them at all times, an& if this is dono tho extra quality of tho stock raised will amply pay for tho extra expense of tho article in question.
