'lis only a spider's wob," we say, As we brush the filmy lace away Without singlo thought or cite, For tho wonderous beauty hidden there. And yet that common web may vlo With famous ancient tapestry? Iti Taricd patterni may compare With tipaniih lace o rich and rare. And when 'tii gemmed with morning dow, Which reflect tho sun's resplendent hne Though unadmired, more fair and bright That silken laco with gems bedight. Little we think as careless hands Rudely bmk the silken strands, Hidden away in dust and gloom, They're fairer than lace from an Kastcrn loom. So bounteous Nature holds in storo Volumes of wonderous, unwritten lore, Whieh well wo might with profit read Beautiful lessons 'twere well to heed. Liko the spider let us strand by strand Weave tho web of life with careful hand, That when at last our work Is done, Wo may leave a shining web well spun. Cat. Potron. Comparative Profits in Dairying. Milk nitulo into ordinary butter and chcoso docs not nvorngo to tho producer moro than 1$ cents per quart. At this prico it la as milk exceedingly cheap food, but it cannot bo delivered in cities nt twico this figuro, ovon under tho most favorable circumstances. In winter milk always advances in prico, for tho good reason that with cold weather and a con siderable portion ot dry feed, it ia im possible to kcop up as largo a flow as tho cow undor bottor conditions will givo in summer. Milk spoils or waters rapidly, and it also requires considorablo labor to caro for it properly. It is this reason, mora than tho cost of producing milk, which makes it dear to city buyers nt all Boasons of tho year. I summer, whon it is produced most cheaply, it cannot bo easily kopc sweet for many hours. Thcro nro comparatively fow places where milk can bo bought in cities. Grocors find tho demand very uncortain. Somotimcs they will liuvo not half enough, and within a day or two tho samo amount will leavo a sur plus to go to waste For this reason, us well as tho unpleasant labor of cleaning vessels that lmvo contained milk, it is not in much favor with grocery dcalors. It is unfortunato for nil partios that milk and its products aro not moro gen erally usod for food. Tho quostion is somotimcs nskod, "What is tho Grango doing? To those who will not closo their oyes to its work it moro and moro demonstrates by its acts, its influence for good, in local, State, and national affairs. Hero is an instanco of its local work. An extract from tho minutes of Millis Grango, No. 112, Hassachueottcs : "Tho discussion of tho question, How can tho Grango increnso tho property of tho town of Millis? brought out tho following points : 1. That wo do all wo can for tho Grango. 2. That wo set out trees by tho road side. 3. That wo liolp build sidowalks in tho middlo of tho town. 1. That wo mow tho bushes by tho roadsido adjoining our farms. 5. That wo voto to keop tho Danvillo school running. G, That wo croato a public senti ment that tho town may voto to grant monoy to keop tho comotory in repair. 7. That wo do nil wo con to repress the Balo of intoxicating liquors. 8. That wo attend tho church and Sabbath-school. 9. That wo support tho lectures and moral entertainments. In a number of our States tho timo has nearly or quite como around for tho celebration of "Arbor Day," n doy sot apart by law and nnder proclamation of tho Governor, devoted to tho planting of trees in groves, along highways and around buildings; not only beautifying tho homo and tlu neighborhood, but aiding in tho restoration of tree growth, 60 necessary to maintain a proper cli mato and conditions of rainfall and moisture, so essential to tho growth of all our crops. In soveral States, by direct and united action of tho Grange, tho proper legislation has been secured for an Arbor Day. In other States Patrons still have this work to do. Tho day should be observed, and in due form. Organized effort in this, as in all other directions, secures better results. Pre pare for it ; talk it over in moetings. What are tho best varieties of trees to plant; when and how shall wo plant them, etc.? The number of Granges that regularly observe Arbor Day is in creasing. Oregon Kidney Tea cures backache, OLEOMAROAttlHB. It seems that Trof. Wiloy of the de partment of agrioulturo at Washington has been making tcBts of bogus butter and recent news givo tho following results. Prof. Wiloy's oxporiments hnvo been progressing moro than a year. Tho materials for investigation were purchased in open market in all parts of tho country, no intimation being given in any caso of tho purposo for which tho purchaso was intended. In not moro than ono-third of tho cases did tho purchaso provo to bo adultera tion, excopt when something elso than butter was asked for, and fraudulent articles woro thoso sccurod whon low priced materials woro callod for. In no caso was it found that an articlo sold in tho markot as buttorino was entirely fradulent. Tho adulterated article- usu ally contained botweon 30 and 40 per cent, of butter, tho rest most commonly consisting of bcof-fat, lard nnd cotton seed oil, Prof. Wiloy devotes some Bpaco to tho consideration of tho opin ions of scientific men with regard to tho wholcsomcnoss of oleomargarino and kindred compounds. Ho finds that about nino out of every ten of tho scientists who have expressed thorn selvos dcclaro tho boliof that oleomar garino is unobjoolionablo and whole Borne. Tho largor nnd moro important part of this report is devoted to an an alysis of dairy products and their sub stitutes and tho methods dotormining ndultoratlons. Tho chomists' oppor tunity for investigation nro greater than have over boforo leen recorded, and tho result is n troatiso which covers ovory detail of this important subject, Tho conclusion is renchod that a microscopo is a much mora useful instrument in this direction than Europpan chemists lmvo over been willing to admit, and is in fact an invaluablo adjunct to tho chemical laboratory for this particular work. It booms, thon, that very fow adultera tions nro attempted ot puro butter nnd chcoso nnd thonrticlcs in uso as "buttor ino" nnd othor nnmes nro soldom at tempted to bn palmod oil ns n puro articlo ; also, theso imitations of butter nro net often unhoalthy, or in any sonso injurious to public health. Hot Water Baths. A good wny io season gloss and china so that thoy will remain sound if ex posed to sudden heat or cold is to placo tho nrticlos in cold wator, bringing it gradually up to boiling point, and thon allowing it to cool very slowly, .taking soveral hours to do it. Tho commoner tho materials tho moro caro is required, for tho best glaes and china is soasoncd before it is placed on the markot. If tho wares are properly soasoncd in this way thoy may bo washed in boiling wntor without fear of fracture excopt in frosty wenthor, whon, if thoy liavo been oxposcdto thoeflocts of tho cold, caro must be taken not to put them into too hot water suddenly. "My mother geU mo up, builds the fire, and gets my breakfast and sonds mo ofT," said a bright youth. "Then sho gets my father up, gets his break fast and sends him on". Then she gives tho other children their breakfast and sends them off to school; and then sho and the baby have their breakfast." "How old is the baby?" asked tho re porter. "Oh, sho is 'most two, but sho can talk and walk oa well as any of us." "Aro you well paid?" "I get 13 a week, and father gets f 2 a day." "How much does your mother get?" With a bewil dered look, the boy said, "Mother, why she don't work for anybody." "I thought you said she worked for all of you." "0 yes, for us, she does; but there ain't no monoy in it" Ex. 4jvL ijfa $li.Idreti. THAT BOY. Through tho house with laugh aud shout, Knees threadbare and elbows out, Mamma hears with anxious doubt, That boy. Vain are all the lessons taught; In one short hour they are forgot, Gontlo manner loarneth not That boy. Thus sho muses, whilo she tries To sooth tho wakened baby's cries; Whilo to other mischtof hios That boy. With aching bead, this mother mild, Looks to tho future of her shlld, Still hoodtcas, yells In acconts wild, That boy Sho hears the dread, unearthly tono, And stifles something like a groan, To some bad end will surely That boy. Patient mother, wait awhile ; Summons back thy loving smile; Soon will graver care bepuilo That boy. Soon tho boy "with chock of tan" Witt be the brawny, boarded man. If thou wouldst trust and honor then That boy. Trust bim now, and let thy care Shield bis soul from overy snaro That waits to capture, unawaro, That boy, And when, thouph worn and oft distressed Thou knowest that God thy work has blessed, Then trust with him for all the rest. That boy. OUR LETTER BOX. All thoso who wish to lmvo n fino growing garden or flowers must begin soon to propnro for it. There is nlwnys to bo found somo rich earth about frco stumps, or on old chip piles whore wood has been cut for tho house. Tho drop pings from tho chickon houso is nn ex cellent fertilizer, but it must bo well mixed with earth, for it is apt to bo too burning. It is best to spread it on tho ground and thon spndo it'in. All tho oarth must bo pulvorizcd flue, so that tho tiny flowor seeds will havo a chanco .to grow. But tho hardest part of garden work is to kcop tho chickons from scratching about it. Tho ohiokons aro not to bo disposod of. Ono may do without flowers, but no farm can do without thoso busy fowls; so if thoro is no convenient fenco to soparato 'tho gar den from tho chickons, tho flowers must bo let nlone, excopt ono might havo bushes and shrubs that can bo protected by putting sticks around thorn. Hut try nnd mako an effort to havo n flowor garden; it Is refining in its inllucnco; it is ono way of passing tlmo to tho best advantage For tho child, lifo is full of energy, that must And outlet in vigorous uso of hand and feot. Ella sends a verso for Lizzlo's album. This reminds .us of somothing thnt n lady handed us to givo to Lizzlo, also somo linos that woro worked on her grandmother's sample This lady is quito old, therefore tho samplo must bo 120 years old. May bo somo of our girls will not know what a samplo wus. In old times pcoplo had no marking ink, so articles were marked with lottcrs of silk thread, and ovory smart young girl would havo a largo picco of canvass with nil tho lottors of tho alphabet, big and littlo, with figures, etc., to bo used for a copy. Thon was added tho date of work and ago of worker. Thoso sam ples aro now kopt as valuablo hoirlooms in families. We had ono, but it was stolon. Tho words on tho samplo ro ferrod to are, "Virtuo and Modoity, adorned with Graco, givo tho best lustra to a lovely faco." Now, this is sent to Lzzio by nn aged lady, who feels tho greatest intorest in young pcoplo, and who loves to read those littlo lottcrs as well as ever sho did. Edward writes a good hand, and spells correctly. Thoso two requirements aro necessary to good letter-writing, and ovory boy should commonco early to practice this important part of educa tion. Wo hopo "Cap" has a good mas ter, one who does not fly into a passion and beat him if he does not quito under stand what is wanted of him, Now, all dogs nro anxious to ploaso, and lovo to play as well as tho dogs do, and if tho sense is not kicked out of them by cruel masters, they will become intelligent and holpful. Graco writes very well, indeed. The only fault is that tho letter is too brief. Now, Grace might have told how she got her pony, and why sho named ifQuccn," when we know our girl must be a little republican, and docs not beliovo in kings and queens. Then tell us if sho takos caro of the pony by foedlng her aud combing her hair, tor animals need such caro when they aro kept tied up in tho stable. Its nico to own a pony, and Grnco ought to bo a happy littlo girl. Mary must 'keep an account of her success in raising ducks. It is said that it is profitable if there is a good stream of water closo by, but that thoy will not lay eggs in n nest. Therefore many eggs aro lost. However, wo shall expect Mnry to obsorve, nnd t61l all sho can loam from experionco about ducks. Yes, ono must fcol sad to seo animals in tho snow and cold, with no food or sholtor. It's so wicked nnd cruel to allow it, No ono should keep animnls unless thoy can provldo for thorn. Auiany, Or., Fob. 62,1887.
