Tho roads in tho Cccur d'Alono coun try aro now rendered impassable by rea son of tho molted snow and high water. Hundreds aro waiting to got in, but will not bo nblo to do so for n week or two. From tho best information, says a Modford pnpor, wo can obtain, tho fruit has not boon injured so far by tho frost. Wo havo had Bovoral protty heavy frosts but not cold enough to frcczo tho frnit. The Indians havo been considering their choico of tho innerva tion, and say they mean to havo tho best of iu Walla Walla has $1,853.67 in tho treasury. Good carpenters aro in de mand. Coos Bay News : Tho weather of Into lids been delightful, and with tho excep tion of light fi-on of mornings, bears all tho npiiearnuco o( summon Tho swallows havo arricd, humming birds aro flitting about ; pheasants aro dramming, and tho jaw of tho Coos river fish liar waggctli Iiko tho cutter bono of a goose. Lambing will soon commence, and everything is favorable for good results. Two cars of hops, consisting of 152 bales, wore shipped to Milwnukeo last week from Kittitas. This shipment clears Yakima of hops. Stockmen in tho vicinity of Wagner, Grant county, do not find tho losses as heavy as expected. Loss on cattle will be about 5 per cent., on sheep, 15 per cent. Sunflowers havo been raised for cen turies in Russia and Tartary for fuel. They nro now being cultivated in Da kota for that purpose. Thoy mnko a good hot fire. Tt tho seed is good, tho cutting of potatoes to pieces with two oyes will produce good results. In dutting, al ways endeavor to leave as much of tho tuber to tho eyes as possible, as it sorves ns plant food in tho early stages of growth. Manuring land by plowing undor somo kind of grcon crop, such as millot, buckwheat, pats or peas, should bo tho object of every farmer. Clover is also excellent, and lime should bo freely used at tho tamo time. All food cooked for stock is moro easily assimilated than when raw. It is only n question of cost in cooking. Boots cooked and thickened' with ground grnin mnko an excellent moss for all kinds of stock. A mixture of cqunl parts of red pop per and Scotch snuff thrown into rat holes will causo tho vermin to leavo. Rats soon becomo suspicious of poison, and tho mixturo easily frightens them. Potting Hyacinths. As tho eonson for potting Hyacinths, etc., is near nt hand, nnd never having seen tho method I practico in print although others may practico it, I dcom it of somo importanco in tho way of cleanliness and convonloncot bunco this communication, that nthore, if thoy choose, may avail thomselvos of it in preference to burying thoir pots after planting. I first select such sized pots as aro snitablo for tho different kinds of bulbs nnd plant them in tho usunl way, treating Hyacinths, Tulips, Crocuses, Narcissus, etc., nil nliko. I thon tnko Cots smaller than tho pots in which tho ulbH aro planted, fill them with oarth and invert them over tho bulb, pressing them down slightly; thus I Bccuro tho necessary darkness whilo tho roots aro ponctrating tho soil, tho weight of tho pot and contents preventing tho bulb from rising, as is sometimes tho case. I then set thorn in tho collar, or on tho floor of tho grcenhouso, or other convenient place, givo attention to watoring, and upon inspection, which is easily done, select such as aro tho far thcrcit advanced, romoving tho upper pots, placing thoso selected in tho light, pursuing tho usual courso ; tho llomana especially soon go into bloom. Eirly Gabbaxes. Tho following is tho rulo for raising early cabbages, as given to tho Ameri can Cultivator, by W. D. Philbrick. It is for early cabbagos as grown for tho Boston mnrkot, and will bo found to bo very interesting reading: Those who want thoir cabbages oarly gonerally plant scod about tho 10th to to tho lfith of February, in a mild hot bed, and transplant to another bod when thoy havo four loaves, planting them 200 to each sash. Tho plants should bo airod froely, so as to givo thorn stocky growth, nnd whonovor tho wcathor is fine will do hotter if tho glass is en tirely removed for tho day. About April 10 to 12 tho glass can bo taken off to uso on cucumbers, covering tho cab bage plants at night with shuttors in caso cf frost. About April 20 it is usual to plant out the early cabbages in tho flold if it can bo mnuo ready, but tho propnrntion of tho land requires that it should bo dry enough to work mellow. If tho land was heavily manured in fall it is usual to givo in spring a dressing of night soil or nitrate ol Boda in addition. If no manuro was put on in fall n dressing of twenty cords per aero sproad and plowed in togcthor with half a ton of somo good fertilizer or eight loads of night soil per aero will do no harm ; for it Is an old and true saying that tho Inst load of manuro on the early cabbago field makes the profit. It takes more than donblo the manure to grow early cabbages that is required for lata ones, which Is explained by tho chemists by tho fact that nitrification in tho soil goes on rapidly in the summer, but siowiy in spring. The land for early cabbages should bo well drained and mellow, and if dry enough to suffer by drought, it should be provided Vith a supply of water ; for tuero nro lew crops tnat antler moro quickly from drought. Tho land is pro pared by plowing twice and rolling, then throwing into drills thrco feet apart, on which tho cabbago plants 'are set by band two feet apart after a marker, or about 7000 plants por acre. In most places except Arlington, the early cabbage is subject to tho attacks ot tbe maggot. Tins is the larva of a small ily, resembling tho house fly, which begins to deposit its ectra on tho cabbage stumps early in May. The eggs are very small ana wmto, ana are closo to the surface of the ground, If one goe over the field and rubs oft these eggs threo or four times between May 1 and May 16, ho will not usually hnvd much troublo from iho maggot, other wise they frequently ruin tho crop alto gether, or in part. Early cabbages should bo hoed or cul tivated ovory ton days, or after ovory rain, to koop the land around thorn mel low until tho loaves spread so as to stop this. Thoy will ncod ono or two hoo ings nfter tho cultivator stops. Thcro is no crop that responds so quickly to thorough tilth and heavy manuring as cabbages. About Juno 20 tho first heads orpin to gcthnrdonough for mar ket, and from this to tho middlo of July the cnbbngo field usually loads the mar kot'wagon pretty hcnvily. Tho best very early cabbago is tho Wakefield ; it is small, however, nnd i quickly followed by tho much lnrgor Henderson, nnd by Ixiw's Pecrloss, which is nearly tho samo thing, though poriiaps a triflo bettor. About tho mid dlo of July tho larger Fottlor's drumhead comes in nnd supplies tho market till winter. Early cnbbngcs wcro wcro formorly far moro profitublo than now, tho writor well romembcring seeing them sold in 1807 for $18 por hundred. Now thoy seldom bring over sovon cents, and aro often as low ns four or fivo cents each. Usually n good crop of cabbago will yield $300 to $500 per aero, but a poor crop will not pay for tho oxponsivo ma nuring required. Tho cost of raising thorn, including plants, cannot bo placed much below $200 por aero, charging'thom with two-thirds tho valuo of tho manuro, which is perhaps hardly enough, for thoy aro hungry feeders ana leavo tno land rntner poor, oven nfter very honvy manuring. Carey Btock Bale. Tho stock snlo advertised by Mr. R. W. Cnroy, nt Oak Lawn Farm, noar Maclcay, camo off as advertised. Thcro wcro but fow in attendanco, but such Block as was sold brought far bettor prices thnn was expected. Tho Hales mado wcro as follows: Mr. Doug Lov ens, of Galosburg, Douglas county, Or., bought tho Abordcoii bull, "Constable ol llillliurst, " for $770, and n!no a three fourtl bred Abordcoii bull calf for $50; nbo tho thoroughbred Jorsoy bull, "V uM of Oak Lawn." nr co 105. Mr, T. D. Allen bought a Shropshire ram for in'. Another party bought a lmli-brccu Abordocn bull calf. This snlo demon stratcs to stockmen tho valuo of having tuorouchbrcd nnunals. It will bo seen that whon it is dosircd to dlsposo of them that n good markot is open, and fair prices can bo rcaiizou. Ilnrklen'a Arnlra Haltr. The Beit Salve in tho world for Cute.
