WILLAMETTE FARMER: SALEM, OREGON, MARCH 25, I8b7 . Jioullrvi. OBO. D. GOODHUE, EDITOIt. Hens Hint nro broody ought to bo Bet this month in wnrm, sheltered places whoro neither Jock Frost nor other annoynncea will interfere with the incubative process. 600 that the. fowls got a drink of water twico a day, not snow or ic water, but wnter with the chill taken off. A drink of milk onco a day will help nlong tho egg supply. There is a poultry farm in Ithodo Is land containing 200 acres, on which is kept 17,000 fowls, mostly Plymouth Rocks and light Drnhmns. Tho yield of eggs is about 1.C00 dozen a mouth, and they aro marketed twice a week. Tho nvorngo prico per dozen is 22J cents the year round. It costs about $1 n year to kcop them, and tho profit is about $1 por head per year. Tho feathers bring lrpm a to as coins per pouna. incu bdtors'aro used mostly for hatching and brooders for raising thorn. Gceso and ducks aro also kept and hutched and raised in tho eamo manner, and nrc found very profitable. TO. Possibilities or a Trio of a esse. Just at tho present there !b no class of fowls that is attracting more attention thnn gceso, and tho question is often naked can geoso bo raised profitably? Wo most emphatically answer, yes. From somo reason gceso havo in the post been sadly neglected in this coun try, but tho French and Ocrnmns havo bcon enthusiastic in their improvement and wo now hnve them bred up to an enormous nlzo and to a high standard. Thcro aro several varieties of puro bred gceso but tho Toulous is tho largest and moat popular. Ab "Figures won't Ho" wo will try and show tho profit that can bo realized from a trio of this beautiful variety. In tho first plnco they will yield six pounds of feathers during tho year nnd tho feathers will sell for $0, enough to pay for their keep, leaving any othor in crcaso as clear profit. Tho two gceso will lay bctwoon sixty and sovonty eggs if not allowed to sit, and with a littlo judicial advertising ovory egg can be sold for 30 cents each. This will givo us $18 for oggs alone. If tho eggs aro not sold thoy can bo hatched at homo. Ab geoso eggs nro vory fcrtilo and gos lings execouingly haidy ono could suro ly raiso thirty goslings from sixty eggs. Tho goslings when maturo will sell f-cadily at $5 per pnir. This will givo $75. To somo who havo novor handled gceso this may seem a littlo oxtravagnnt but to tho fancier who soils pairs for-flU and moro it will socm very small iigures Whilo thcro is no dangor of over doing tho chickon business, it has becorno very difficult for nn amntuor to "get on top." This is not tho cueo with goeso, thoro is a great demand for eggs and breeding stock nnd no ono has any to spare. Thcro is "millions in it" as woll as roputntion for tho breodor of high class gceso of tho host varieties. Tho first instalment of tho collection of unpublished letters of Thackeray, to bo published in Scrjbncr's Magazine, will appear in tho April nnmlcr. Tho letter will b preceded by an introduc tion by Mrs. llrooklleltl, to whom most of them wcro written. They will bo nrrangod in u einiplo chronological order, regardless of their rolatlvo impor tance, and will bo accompanied by Mrs. Brookfield's nnd by othor notes. In tho arrangment of tho letters, as well ns in somo additional annotation, tho Editor has had tho urivilnco of advico and as sistance from Mr. James lliusell Lowoll, who kindly consented, with tho cordial nnprovnl and thanks of Mrs. Ilrookfield, to civo this aid in their preparation for tho press. A brief noto from Mrs. Ilitchio to Mrs. Brookiield is also printed with tho first instalment, expressing cordial pleasure in tho knowledge of Mrs. llrook Hold's intendod publication. Tho lottors in tho April number aro about twenty, of varying length, written from 1847 to 1819 several of tho longer ones from Paris, Brussels, and elsewhere on tho Continent. It would bo difficult to speak too strongly of tho ntorest and valuo of tho longer letters in this and tho following instalments, and of the great importanco of many to a truo understandingof Thackorny's character. They aro liko rending a now nnd moro than over interesting story from tho well-known pen ; but one with nn inti ma to personal character which no other could have. Everything in them is in tensely characteristic of Thackeray ; his humor pervades them all ; they abound in shrowd comments on men and events, and contain many glimpe of his own opinions and beliefs on subjects of which ho seldom spoke. Thoy aro especially notable for their references to his own work ; and to characters who are now everybody's friends, and whom he men tions always as though thoy were reali ties. FUh and Rabin. A bulletin of the United States Fish Commis sion wya: "The total distribu tion,! shad for tho season of 1886 aggregates over 90,000,000. As the entire umber of shad taken for market is something )pa than 6,000,000, it well bo seen tli.it fir rhml taken from the waters this ecitsoti for market, fifteen young shad have ben artificially hatched and returned. The entire cost of produc tion and distribution has been less thnn 20,000, nnd, therefore, tho young fih havo been produced and distributed over tho United States nt tho cost of about 5215 for 1,000,000, or forty-six young, for each, rent of expenditure, Another interesting fact to noto is thnt for tho cntiro timo up to nnd including 1882, thcro wero produced by nrliucial propagation nlono 200,000,000 young shad, whilo tor 188C alnno tho total pro duction was over 90,000,000. These facts indicate that wo are certainly get ting to n point whero tho work muy bo reganica as prontnoio from n commercial standpoint. Tho following is a summary of tho shad dirtributcd during tho year 18SG, arranged by rivor basins : Tributaries of Narragansott Bay, 2,534.000; tributaries' of Long Island Sound, 710,000 i Hudson Kivcr, 2,312, 000 j Dolawaro Kivcr, 21,028,000; tribu taries of Chcsancako Bay, "62,500,000 ; tributaries of Albcrmarlo Sound, l,9iH), 000 streams draining into the South Atlantic, 4,183,000; Mississippi River and minor tributaries of tho Gulf of Moxico. 4,758,000; Colorado Kivcr, Gulf of California, 850,000; Columbia Bivor basin, 850,000; total, 02,401,000. Salmon and salmon trout aro running up over tho rifllcs of tho Snn Joaquin very extensively. Sovoral wagonloads assorted river fish havo been brought to Merced in tho last two weeks. How to Prepare Snusago for Summer. Grind and season as for present use; havo n jar ready by tho stove, then make into cakes and fry until tho water is thoroughly out, then turn nil into tho jar, carefully adjusting tho cakes, nnd so continue until done; then lot itaUinJ until cold; then melt frosh lard and pour over until it stands two inches above tho cakes ; now cover nnd put away ns you do lnrd. When using from tho crock tho grease that you tnl;o out with tho cakes must bo heated and re turned to tho jar, always keeping smooth surfaco to prevent penotration of air, which will cnuo tho fat to mold and thus become strong. This is not only a raro dish, but ono thnt is always handy. It will keep a long time. I had somo this morning as swcot and frosh as when prepared Inst January. When I got a surplus of groaso in tho jar 1 uso it to fry chicken, potatoes, mush, etc. I liko it bettor for theso purposes than clear lard. Tryit tho Iam euro you will not regret is. Congress has adjourned, and, looking over its work, mombors of tho Grange havo reason to rojoico at tho progress rhado towards a proper recognition of tho just claims of ngriculturo for fair and equal legislation, and a voico in tho councils of tho Nation. Ncvor beforo havo tho advantages of organized effort been so plainly shown. Without doubt, moro than through all other causes com bincd, farmers united in tho Grango se cured (ho nnssngoo! thointor-Stntocom mcrco bill, tho Hatch experimental sta tion bill, defeated tho porsistcnt cllorts continued from other yoani to rcmovo all Tariiruuties upon "raw materials," preserved from amendmont or destruc tion tho oleomargarino law, again had the "Secretary of Agriculturo" hill pass (he Houso of Boprcsentativcs, and for the Hi M tlmo secured tho ondorsomont of tin Scuato for so just n measure, ihich was only finally lost in tho rush t hiiMncss during tho closing hours. Yen, wo can roport progress, and our Order stands brighter nnd belter beforo tho country and tho world than cvor before. Our Winter campaigh has been a sua ccsafulono, and tho sunshino of pros perity brightens our onward way. How truo tho words of good Bro. Aikon, of South Carolina: "Tho keel of tho Grango ship was well laid. Its majestic sides wore ribbed by tho mechanism of profound thought. Its spars, braced by fraternal cords, havo nover bcon shat tered by tho fury of tho storm. Its nails are still whole, and havo boon whitened by tho friction of popular criticism. Often has it buoyed in turbid waters. Still oltcncr has it glided gracefully and triumphantly over tho billows of preju dice, that lashed so furiously under its bow. To-day it floats in placid wators. Its heaven has not yet bcon reached, nor will it bo until every farmer in tho lund shall have roceivod somo of tho bonofits of its launching. Moro nnd moro do wo hear of farmers' clubs changing their organization into Granges, and thus going up higher, taking a forward step. All that can bo accomplished in tho club can bo brought about in tho Grango nnd much moro bo fiidos. Tho club as a rulo confines its work to local, matters and having no formal connection with othor clubs can not woll handlo matters of Stnto and National importance. It may discuss broad subjects, but thero is no unity of action. Wo aro always glad to hoar of tho organization of a (armors' club, not only bocauso it so much better thnn no organization, but becauso wo know that tbo chances aro goou tuui 11 win uccomo a Grango by-and-by. "A nation in its industrial progress whon tho competition of tho world is keen, cannot stand still. Thrco condi tions only are possible. It may go for ward, retrogrado or perish." What a power the Grange must rontinuo to bo Ill mis luuiiainui j)rnK'u, - ul" vuuutry, and what a responsibility rests upon its .11. i.v.. .( r ........ membership in seeing that it is real pro gress. "I would impress you with tho duty to taking such steps and adopting, such measures as will induco tho pooplo of our rural districts to riso to a fuller and clearor conception of tho importanco of an educational training, and causo them to moro fully apprcciato tho intellectual man, remembering that our agricultural communities aro great reservoirs from which must como those who will bo ex pected to wield a great influence over society at large. Tho Grango should bo mado a school, indeed, in which tho membership can bo enlightened nnd pre pared for a higher order of citizenship and be able to hold elevated positions in society. In this you should remember tho duty of this progressive Order is not only to permit but to cause tho brain to run in such channels and explore such ideas as will yield tbo greatest possiblo good to the human race."
