Great Loss of Stock.
A gentleman who arrived horo yes
tcrday from Montana gives n most do
plorablo account of tho great loss among
stock in that region. Ho Bays tho lobs
is simply fearful. Stock raisers, bo af
firms, estimate their loss at something
liko 25 per cent, but ho gives it as his
opinion that it would roach 75 per cunt,
or probably exceed that figure. Tho
loss is spread over a wido rogion of conn
try. Last fall was dry, and consequent
ly tho grass was vory short almost a
failure. Following this camo a vory
sovoro winter, nearly Arctic in its novor-
ity, which found tho cattlo in a very
poor condition to wenthor tho blast
Deep snows, and cold, pitiless rain and
sleet storms swept ovor tho wbolo coun
try, and tbo soon stock had no nltcrna
tivo loft but to succumb. In many sec
tions, especially thoso timbered, tho
gentleman said that tho enow reached a
dopth of twclvo feet Through this tbo
cattlo hclplossly floundorcd, until over-
como by hunger, weakness nnd cold
thoy sank down and died literally in
heaps. Since tho thaw came, and tbo
vast masses of snow havo commonccd
to disappear, tbo great losses to stock is
beginning to bo realized by raisers and
ranchmen. Our informant stated that
no ono could fully rcalizo tho dreadful
ravago of tbo winter unless ho woro ac
tually to wanes it witn ins own eyee.
From what was said it is to bo inferred
that tho real losses can not bo estimated
in dollars at prosont. Orogonian.
