WILLAMiSTTfi FABMBK: SALEM, OREGON, MARCH 18, 1887 M Pr rt m EM it fItt aitje trtlt. MRB HARRIOT T. CLARKE, Kpiioa .ENDS AND MEANS, Wo ipend our strength in labor dy by day Wo find new strength rep'ftcing old alwayi And (till we cheat ourselves, and still wo say: "No man would work except to win somo prizo ; Wo work to turn our hopes to certainties, For gold, or gear, or favor in men's eyes," And all the while, the' goal toward which we strain. Up hill and down, in sunshine and in rain, llccdlcis of toll, if so wo may attain, Is but a lure, a hoavenlyset deooy To exercise endeavor, full employ Of every power, which is mau'a highest joy. And work bosomes the end rewaad the means To woo us from our idloneas and dreams, And such is truly what the other seems. 80, Lord, with such poor service as we do, Thy full salvation is our prize in view, For which we long, and whioh we press unto. Liko a great star, on which wo fix our eyos, It dazzles from tho high, blue distances, And seems to beckon and to say, "Arise I" And wo arise and follow the hard way, Winnin? ft littlo nearer day by day, Our hoarts l;olng faster than our footsteps may; And nover guess the secret awect devico Which lures us on and upward to tho skies, And makes each toil its own reward and prire. To givo our littlo selves to theo, to blend Our weakness with thy strength, 0 Lord, our friend, Tbia is life's truest privilege and end. WOMEN IN OCR GRANDMOTHER'S AND NOW. DATS , Jinny of tho mothers of tho prceont g6ncration wear awny their lives in tho kitchen in order that their daughters might got ft smattering of French, mu sic, painting nnd otlior accomplishments, and whilo thoy woro thereby rendered useless ns wives for working men thoy wcro rarely dowered sufllciontly to pny tho coat of servants, and, if thoy woro, thoy know not how to manage thorn. Fanny Fern usod to Bay that man wna an alligator, and, if well-fed, was easily managed, but if wifo and hired girl do not understand tho chemistry of bread making, let alono general cookory, how can children bo kept healthy or a hus band bo prcvontcd from degenerating into a dyspeptic savago? In our grandmother's days pcoplo wcro beginning to boo as through a glass, darkly, tho mellcnnium for their ' children, a millennium to bo brought about by labor-saving machinery, and it is of interest in this day to tnko a retro spect of what thoso old-timq women ac complished and tho difficulties under which thoy labored, and ono docs not need to bo oyer SO to rcmombor their straits. Light at night was obtainod cither from a tallow dip, mado in tho houeohold, or from a Dutch lamp llllcd with candle-wick and lard, and though wo may wonder thoy did not become blind, yet they did not need spectacles at as early an ago as wo do now, Thoy took long journeys on horseback or in lumboring stage coaches ovor roftds that would shako tho bones out of their de ccndanls, and thoy regarded theso jour noys as relaxation. Thoy spun tho wool, cotton and flax nnd wovo by hand tho clotlr necessary for tho family, and thoy cut nnd sowed it into garmonta. Thoy paid 80 corits a yard for calico prints for socloty apparol. Thoy usod thorns for pins and took mora caro of n cneo of needles than tho modorn house keeper docs of her silvor ware. Thoy covered tho ombors of their fires caro fully nt night, for thoy-had no matches, and if a iiro happened to go out it might nocessitato a walk of a milo to a neigh bor's houso for a burning brand in the morning before coflco could bo mado or moat fried and cakes bakod for broak fast. Thoy got through with all this multifarious labor without tho aid of sowing machines, and they but rnroly hod a hired girl to help. They mado their own soap, and without formulas savo tho traditions of their ancestors, and it was it caso of fit-und-try; and when tho chemical combination could bo effected in no other way thoy had to rosort to incantations. It was necessary to make it when tho moon was in a soap-making humor, and a spring or well could not bo clcanod, nor seeds planted, nor children weaned, unless tho signB of tho zodiao wero propitious. Notwithstanding all theso hindoranccs, our grandmothers found timo to learn tho bhorter and longer catechisms ; to read and almost momorjzo tho Biblo, Josephus, Pilgrim's Progress and the Dialogues of DoviIbj acquired a mind of crisp proverbial philosophy, and wero better conversationalists than aro thoir granddaughters to day. . And not only did thoy do all this, but found timo to assist our grandfathers in the harvest field. It will not bo argued that woraou should thus bo mado a beast of burd.cn, but tho citition of theso facts shows what woman can do when tho occasion calls for intense energy. Some of theso old people lived to get a glimpse, liko Moses, of the promised land, tho inher itance of their children of the time sowing machines should reduce house hold drudKory ono-lmlf ; when enough matches can bo bought for five- cents to kindlo flros for a year; wlion yoast can bo bought for ono 'cent sufficient to do tho family baking; when sonp can bo bought choapcr than.it canbo mado at nomo; in snori, wuon invention arm uis covory havo reduced housohold labor to tho minimum, and in imagination their fancy rovelod in tho "possibility of ex cellence; and ominonco" whioh would bo oponed to their granddaughtors. Could tuoy revisit thoir earthly abodos tuoy would find that all theso advantages f6r culturo havo turned to dust and nshos in tho mouths of n vast majority of thoir granddaughters Biiuply becauso tno daughters did not uo their duty and teach thoir children tho secret of mak ing homo happy tho secret that, if em ployed, would do moro to doplcto tho haunts of vico than all tho moral teach ing that has bcon hoard from tho pulpit in tho Inst twenty-flvo yonrs. Somo of tno ovu results of tho present system aro tlins it has given us a isurpluB of only half competent femalo school teach ers, music tcachcr8 clerks, soamstrcsscs. etc., a miserable discontented army of grumblorB who diffuso their misory and discontont through almost tho entire army of bread-winners. It is a class that makes moro troublo in tho indus trial world than docs convict labor. Pittsburg Dispatch. CHOICE RECIPES. Cottage Pudding. "Wo hopo sho will koop tho resolution ; wo think Bomowhnt as Corda docs, thnt timo might bo moro profitably spent in attonding good mcotinga than too much dancing. Dancing in itsolf is no moro than any gamo that might bo played by young ladios and gcntlomon. It is tho exorcises which nro npt to follow whoro numbers of young folks gnthor in a public placo to spend n wholo night with this amusomont. Then at such gatherings it is too often that strangers aro admitted of whoso character nnd antecedents parents know nothing. Pooplo nro always known by tho com pany thoy koop, nnd thoso wo respect most aro not found following tho violin, It is nico to soo a numbor of young poo plo dancing if it bo in a private houso whoro father and mothor may look on nnd onjoy tho Bight of theso young friends so full of lifo and vivneity, in n simple danco.
