rvA' WILLAMETTE FA.UMEB: SALEM, OKEGO.N, MAHCII 11, 18&7 I?, rl j I 11 4' .H poiilirit. GEO. D. GOODHUE, EDITOR. POULTRY NOTES- Eggs put in Incubators ought not to bo over ten days old to hatch well. Mr. Orcn Savngo hna ombarkod In tho poultry business. Success to him. f No breed o( chickens nro profitable nftor throo years old, kill them off. Sot this down as a fact that no Bet ting breed will lay as many eggs in ono year as a non-uctting breed. Don't count tho chicks before tho eggs batch, nor don't count tho chicks boforo thoy aro raised to maturity. "Poultry fovcr" is catching and when it gots a hold on a person that don't know much about this particular kind of. fever it is very apt to end in a chill. A hen will consnmo about 000 ounces of food in ono year, or tho equivalent of ono bushol of whoat. Sho must lay ut least 00 eggs to bo profitable to her owner. Why don't markot dealers hero buy and Boll poultry by tho pound as thoy do turnover Tnoro would bo somo en couragement in raising largo fowls, and no ono would bo swindlod. OET READY. Wo hopo to boo every brocder, espec ially in tho valley, to try and exhibit noxt fall nt thoStato Fair. Tho society will havo amplo preparations for all, and if thoro !b not a good show of fino poultry it will bo tho fault of tho brood ers. Poultry breeders aro quito numer ous, and a trio or two show by each brooders would mako up a fino show. Wo find many making tho excuso that tho fair is hold at tho wrong timo of tho year to oxhibit fowls. Wo all stand on tho samo footing in condition of fowls at this season, and ono stands as good n chanco to win as onothor, as far as condition goes. Wo know a good ox hibit can bo had if our frionds will rniso a fow early chicks and tako good oaro of them. Such birds will havo fino plum, ago and show well. Any ponon, with chicken sonso knows that in Boptembor that all fowls ono year old or moro aro in moult and of courso thoy aro not ex pected to show woll. Wo havo always boon an exhibitor at tho State Fair through thick and thin and wo havo not koptour stock at homo bocauso wo could not havo our own way, or becauso tho society did not givo tho attention to our department wo thought thoy ought to. Wo havo always derived profit from our exhibits, besides wo havo tho plcaBuro of mingling with our frionds in social chat around tho camp fires. Wo lcam something. Wo go homo at tho closo of tho fair with ploasant recollec tion. Wo bavo profited, our stock havo boon advortiscd, wo havo mndo sales, wo bavo seen where othors havo made im provomonts over us, and wo havo Boon whoro othors havo failed. Wo know that niuo tonths of tho oxcuscs given for not exhibiting is from puro selfish motives want to pull down tho Oregon Stato Fair haven't boon noticed my demands havo not bocn rospondod to etc. cto. Tho Oregon State Fair is horo to stay, and it makes no diflerenco as to who its managors aro, it will always bo supported by tho public spirited, and thoso aro sufficiently strong to carry it through. So poultry friend get ready with your early birds and let us all meet next fall at tho fair grounds with a fino show of fowls. Qlmti on HaMiInx 0ttt. i This is tho season when gecso and birds chooso thoir mates, it may not come amiss to speak of somo of their peculiar ities for tho benefit of those who wish to mako tho most of their flock and insure tho fortility of tho oggs on which tho in crease and profit of thoir flock dopends. Any variety that havo a uniform color tho Boxes aro difficult to distinguish in tho young stock until thoir voices aro thoroughly changed. Close observa tion is necessary, and tho ganders may usually bo known by their stately gait, their watchfulness and independence generally. The surplus ganders should be desposcd of or separated from the rest as early as possible in tho winter. The rest should bo separated into re spective families, and assigned their winter quarters, each family by itself if possible. A young gander is very uner liable for mating with moro tbon one goose, so that it is better to mate young stock in pairs. A gander the second season will ac cept of two or even three mates, espec ially if there are young ganders of which be is jealous. Sometimes two young ganders will choose one gooso nnd mtli wm' ton her, while the other Kcr-i wt't i. 'iiuoiiccil ; and M)iiU'tiiui I have l.i. " fne whoro thrw young sters who ,i with together in bachelor life and ltnvu nVolitrtry goose to mako her noat find l.iy her eggs nnd hatch them as lK)3t she colild, which of counts would Ihj a fruitless tiwk as far as tho hatching part of tho buslnoss Is con cerned. Judgment nnd luiit, therefore, is necessary to mako a bucccsu of gooso culture If a young gander is obsorvod to notico two geeso thoy may be placed toeelller. but I 1 1 nifonlv one mato is better for n yearling. Tho egga will bo more rolinblo for hatohing and tho gos lings lo stronger. Thoy usually com mence laying about tho first of March, continuing till tho first of June, laying monntima from thirty to . fifty eggs. Hens mako altogether tho best mothers, as the goslings do bottor in confinement till Bit weeks of age, and a gooso is too largo a bird to bo kept in oloo quarters. Fivo of six eggs aro enough for an ordtf nary hen to cover. Tho early hatched goslings do tho host, for tho cool spring weather and young grass is moro favora bio to thoir growth than tho hot, dry weather later in tho season. It is a curious fact that tho gander is always ready to notico their young, ovon whon hatched by a hen, while I havo seen tho gooso forsako hor brood, hatched by hor self, to call and find her mate, caring more for her companion than sho did for her offspring. Perry of Riverviow Stock Farm, Wilmington, 1)1., has juBt arrived at Fetaluma Gal. with a fino lot of im ported Norman horses. They arrived in fino condition alter an overland trip of fourteen days, and can bo seen by all lovers of fine horses at the Petaluma stablee. Stock breeders who have seen them pronounco them the best lot ever imported into California. Sir. Ferry was the first importer of Norman horsoa form Franco into Cal ifornia. Ho brought out the Dako de Chartrofl, Crown Prince and Itollin, threo of the beet known and most eel ebrated and valuable Normal staliona ever brought to this coast. The numer ous and splendid progency of these three stallions havo placed Sonoma county in the front rank of fine horse producing countries. This is his sixth from him have always found their horses to be as represented. In fact, satisfac tion was given in every case. See adver tisement in this paper. orfictilluial, PRUNING.. The orchard planted and tho trocs, if one year old, cutdown to about cightocn inches, nnd if two year old, removo all branches but three, or at most four, which aro destined as tho foundation of tho futuro head of tho tree. Thcso branches cut back to about six inches from tho main trunk, cutting from tho opposite sido of tho tip of tho bud in tended to form tho uppermost of tho now branches of tho coming yoar's growth. I Bpcoify from tho tip of tho bud for tho roason that if cut lower than that tho branches starting from that bud aro linblo to bo dwarfed by reason of tho oat end of tho branch drying back so as to weaken tho vitality of tho bud, and if tho cutting bo dono higher up froM tho bud, tho branch will dio down to tho now bud and thus provent boat ing over. It is desired to havo tho growing scion tako an upright growth cut inwards from tho under sido of the branch, and if it is desired tho growing scion tako a spreading form, cut from tho upper sido of tho branch, leaving tho bud on tho undor sido. This rulo of cutting is to bo observed in all futuro primings of tho growing trco. Aftor the young trocs aro thus prun ed, littlo or nothing moro need bo dnno to it during tho year. If lcnvos or any of tho branches start out from tho trunk bolow thoso dostincd to form the fnturo head of tho treo thoy must not bo removed, M each romoval exposes tho young, tonder trunk to tho dry, scorching heat of tho summer's Bun, without tho needed protection of thoso leaves nnd branohes. Tho young branchos starting out as abovo indicated ought to bo pinched back, but not re move). T iw proper timo for pruning. Tho ol'jcta for pruning is two-fold tho formation of tho comoly, woll-formod irco, and tho protection of handsomo and dcsirablo fruit in roasonablo quan tities. To accomplish this two-fold ob ject is or ought to bo tho study of overy orchardist. Many notions prevail among orchard is ts an to how this two fold purpose can best bo attainod. Not a fow contond that a trco is better loft entirely alono and grow as it will without any pruning othor than tho removal of a fow branches which may interfcro with tho approaches to tho trco. Those who thus arguo contond tliat nature nover makes a mistake I hold that such aro oxporimonts in ono way. Then wo havo-unother sot' of or chardists who contend for closo, sovero ornamontal pruning, clipping off" ono- hull or two thirds ol overy twig ol tho provioua year's growth of tho hoad of tho head of tho trco. Thcso of courso contond that naturo doos nothing right that naturo if loft to itself would nover do anything right Thcso aro extremi ties in tho opposito direction. Now thcao experiments of both classes ovorlook tho faot that trocs and plants, liko mon and animals havo sovcrnl dis tinct periods in their existence infanoy, youth, maturity and old ago ; in ordor to becomo robust and useful in tho high est dcgioo, and whon of mature ago, thoy need careful nursing in infanoy and proper training in youth. This caro and cultivation of tho trco during its period of probation, being proiwrly attondod to, tho troo at maturity may and ought to bo left pretty much to itself. If so treated, it will generally show tho effects of its training during iU years of maturity and old age, "just as the twig is bont tho trco is inclined." About all caro that is ncedod after maturity is to guard tho troo from acci dont and disoaso, to sco that it doos not shoot, that if allowed to grow would tend to destroy its usofulness or mar its symmetry, and to boo that it has a proper allowanco of moistnro and plant food. Thoso things properly attended to, tho young orchard of to-day will bo in full strength and vigor long after its present owner shall passed ovor to tho other eldo and join tho vast majority. I know of fruit trees which aro now ono hundred yoars old which are Htill healthy and vigorous and producing largo annual crops of fruit. Cal. Pat ron. SEEDS : SEEDS I MILLER BROS., Seedsmen.
