Picturo frames will ofton look as though thoy nocded rcgilding, yhon all that is necessary to improvo their appoaranco is to apply with a soft brush a mixture of white of oggs, two ounces, and ono ounco of chloride. King's yellow and Indian yollow, if shadowod with burnt umber and gamboge, produce a very good imitation of gilt. Defaced gilding if tho rosult of tho dust ndhorlng to tho siirfaco, will look bright and now by be ing coated with wet fuller's oarth, and on tbi9 drying it should reccivo a coat ing of ox-gall with a epongo. To Keep Lemon. Lemons aro a very clicap luxury for thoso living near cities or having easy access to rapid transpor tation, and can bo keptlrosh for months by putting thorn into a clean tight jar or caqk, and covering them with cold water. Koop in -a cool placo out of reach of sunlight, and chango tho wator ofUm not less than overy. third day; every second day is hotter. Lemons aro excellent for winter uso, or if ono is bil ious or inclined to rheumatism. IvoitY may bo cleaned by scrubbing with a new soft tooth-brush, soap and tepid water, then dry tho ivory and brush well, dip tho lator in alcohol and polish tho ivory until it has rogaincd its termor sheen. If tho wator gives tho ivory a yellowish tint, dry tho object in a boated placo. If ago has yellowed it placo tho object undor a bell jar with a small vessol containing limo and mur iatic acid, and sot tho wholo in tho sun. 1 Baked Indian Puddino. An Heroic Soldier Dude. Bow Brave "Little Dandy" Sled for His Wine. "Little Dandy" tho boys called him. Ho joined our company in Vicksbnrg just before tho seigo, and none of us felt enough interest in him to make any inquiries, oays tho Atlanta Constitution. His extreme youth he was about six teen would have excited our sympathy under other circumstances, but the war worn veterans in the trenches bad no use for the curled darlings of the parlor, and "Little Dandy V appoaranco was against him. Tho lad wore the gray uniform of a private, but it was of the very finest material, finer than anything worn by our denorals. His buttons had an un soldiorly glitter. Ho sported whlto handkerchiefs, carriod a pocket mirror, and every morning ho combed and curlod his golden locks until thoy looked liko a girl's tresses. "Hollo, Littlo Dandyl" yolled tho sol diers whenover tho young fellow passed them. To this rough salutation ho always responded with a bow and a smilo, but his soft ways did not win favor. Whon wo mot him in town wo passed him by without notice, and in camp wo let him alone. Littlo Dandy was proud after a fashion, too proud to notico tho many slights hooped upon him. Ho went through his routino duties without complaint, but nothing could induco him to abandon his pockot mirror and his fancy toilets. Tho scifco was well undor way, and wo were no hotter acquainted with Littlo Dandy than at first. Ho shared our meals of mouldy corn broad and mulo meat without a murmur, and it must bo admitted thit this somowhat raised him in our estimation. But wo still had to learn what a truo heart boat bohind thoso glittering buttons. An anglo of tho cnomy's works was dangerously closo to our ontronchmonts, and wo had to keep our heads well sheltered. When wo raisod a hat on tho muzzlo of n musket it wa3 invaria bly riddlod with bullots. Ono morning wo found our men being picked on by an unseen sharpshooter at tho rato of flvo or six an hour. This astonished us bccauBO wo wcroall keeping under cover, and tho men who woro killed nil accn pied well protected positions. Whcrowns tno simrnaiiooicrr xnis was tho unncrmost rmestion in ovory mind. Wo wcro not long in satisfying oursolvcs on this point. Just outsido tho ancle of tho Fcdoral works stood a eiant oak, whoso leafy top afforded an admirablo covort for a riiloman. A vicr ilont scrutiny convinced us that tho man who was doing suoh deadly work in our ranks was concealed in this trco. To reach it ho must havo mndo his way thoro during tho night and ho would would havo to remain thoro all day. But wo could not stand it even ono day. His aim was so unerring that ovory timo his riflo cracked a Confederate bit tho dust. Wo tried a rattling diHchargo of musk etry, but a moment later tho report of tho report of tho riflo rang out and anothor of our comrndos fell. It was evident that from our position it was almost impossiblo to hit tho Fed eral rifloman. If wo succeeded in bring ing him down it would bo by somo lucky randow shot. Possibly somo man outsido tho works would bo able to draw n bead on our wary foreman, but ho would bo undor tho guns of tho enemy, and thoro would bo a thousand chances against him. "I'll kill him or dio I" cried a shrill voico. "Good God! It's Littlo Dandyl" shouted a dozen men. At tho risk of our lives wo pooped over our breastworks. Littlo Dandy had alroady mado his way to tho open spaco between tho works, and was edging around tho right of tho tree. Tho Federals saw what ho was up to, and fired a broadside. Whon tho smoko cleared away and thoy saw tho boy, with a flushed faco and stream ing hair, aiming his gun at tho top of tho old oak, thero was a, tremondous cheor. It rolled along both linos, tho hoarso Federal shout mingled with tho wild "rebel yell." Bang! A man in bluo camo tumbling nnd crashing through tho troo and struck tho ground with ndull thud. It was tho sharpshooter 1 Anothor cheer rent tho air, but this timo it camo from tho Confederates nlono. A sheet of flnmo blazed along tho Federal works, hut when tho smoko liftod wo saw Little Danny coming full tilt in that direction with a smilo on his face. "Thrco cheers for Littlo Dandy!" leaped from hundreds of throats, as tho boy vaultorcd over tho breastworks, and we rushod upon him to hug him in our fronzy of admiration and joy. But Lit tlo Dandy sank down on a heap of loose dirt, and then we saw tho crimson stain on his breast. "I kopt my promise," ho panted. And then as our Colonel took his hand the littlo chap looked into his faco and said: "I'm afraid I'vo mado a poor soldier. Sometimes I've bothered you, I know. But I always wanted to help you. Pleaso remember that I was not vory strong, and and, I did tho best I could." His head fell over. Poor Little Dandy was dead 1 Kattd his Life, Mr. D, I. Wilcoxaon, of Hone Cave. Ky. says he was for many years badly afUicted with Phthisic, also Diabetes; the pains were almost unendurable and would sometimes 1 moit throw him into convulsions. He tried Klectria Hitters and got relief from first Lottie and after taking six bottles, was entirely cured, and had gained in flesh eighteen pounds. Says be positively believes be would have died, had it not been for the re lief afforded by Electric Hitters. Sold at fifty cent a bottle by Port & Son. 6 The difficulty is not so much to mako money as to save it Resolve to eave something. Hffa hildrctv OUR LETTER BOX. It was "Our Boys" who filled tho let ter column last wook. Usually it is tho girls who keep tho letter box full per haps it is tho good example of tho latter somo of whom havo urged tho boys 10 uo mcir part. Aunt iiclty lias a good deal of pndo in Oregon boys and sho novor meets n boy on tho street hut sho spoaks to him, and looking into thoso manly oyos, wondering what sort of a man each will provo to bo. Its not thoso boys who havo tho best advant ages that mnko our host nnd smartest men. Quito to tho contrary, tho Bons of well-to-do parents aro most apt (o fail in life. A boy is tho arbitrator of his own fortuno ; thoro might bo oxcoptions, but genorally it is so. Ono of tho first things a boy should learn to do is to govorn his tonipor. Tho Biblo says ho that ruleth his own spirit is bettor than ho who takoth n city. No man is ovor put in responsible nnd important posi tions who cannot control himsolf, so boys, commence young. When you fcol "mad" stop right thoro and count ono two thrco four flvo thon you will think how contcmptablo ono looks while in an impotent rago. Every timo you control tho tompor it comes easier. Thon good manners always command respect, and thoy command good wages, too, if wo wish to put a duty in tho light of monoy making. Whoro is tho business man that will tako rudo, ill-mannered boy into a business of any kind it he can got n civil polito young fellow. Thero nro plenty of boys in tho country, too, who think its manly to keep his hat on whilo in tho houso or in tho presence of ladies; who put their hands in their pockots, swaggor and smoko cigarettes with npparont prido whilo ovory sonsi blo person looks on nnd says, "how dis gusting that boy is." A gentlemanly boy is always neat. A boy must dress according to tho work ho is to do, but that will not hinder nny body from having clean hands and woll brushed hair. Kcmcmbcr boys that it is not tho occupation that dignifios tho roan, it is tho man who dignifies tho oc cupation, and a farmer boy can mako himself as agrcenblo as any boy who is obliged to stand behind a counter and sell dry goods. Noatncss and good manners will bring out tho gcntloman in any boy, but manners must not bo kept liko Sunday clolhcs uso them every day, don't bo afraid to say "thank you to brothor nnd sister. That nico littlo wdrd "pleaso will you" is so easy to say and it makes all that hear it feel good, willing and kind. A boy who grows up fault-finding, snarling and cross, will never succeed in anything in lifo. Ho never can got justico whon ho should havo it. Such a man novor gots tho benofit of a doubt boforo a jury. "Oh, everybody knows ho is hard to get along with," and so ho loses. Now, boys, if oach ono of yqu would writo and tell Aunt Hotty that each would try and follow this ndvico sho would bo so happy to think sho had dono homo littlo good in tho world. Clara is making a quilt and wo wish wo could givo her somo nico pieces, for wo liko to see tho girls learning to sow by hand it will soon bo that no girl will bo ablo to sow at all from having so many machines. Lowis must live in Eastern Oregon. Wo hopo tho shcop havo dono well this winkr. Wo wonder if Lowis takes good caro of thoso sheep dogsT Somo pooplo never feed tho dogs and then beat or shoot them if thoy help them selves. If we uso dumb animals wo should food them with regularity, and givo them water too. No ono can know how poor animals sulfur just for a drink that costs nothing. It is hard to think of going 20 miles for wood; is thero no coal, Lewis! Writo again and tell of jack rabbits. Edith sends a neatly written letter; if sho writes often and trios her best sho will improvo oach timo. Efllo writes a beautiful hand sho must havo been practicing this winter. It is vory nico of her to send tho verses to Lizzie. Tlicso little exchanges of courtesios aro pleasant. Who knows but this may lead to further acquaint ance. Winnie and Carrols letters will como out next week. New Era, Or., Feb. G, 1887. Editor Home Circle i As I havo not written to tho Faiiueii for somo timo I thought I would write to-day.
