Tho looal wheat market is quiet ami quotable at not more than 70o although Via oliould bo a fair quotation. A Iloatou dinpatch of Feb. 28 says : The tone of tho whole market is about ai unsatisfactory as reported Inst week. Manufacturers still continue to hold off, in oxpectntiou of lower prices, and nro confining their purchased to small lots for immediate ueo. Sales for the week hnvo been 1,571,100 pounds, including all kinds. Oregon wool is rathor quiet; sales 50,000 pounds. Eastern has boon reported nt 17 to 22 cents, and 25,000 kmuu1h wore sold on pnvnto terms. Advices from Oregon report no considerable loss of shcop, but in Montana great loss has been sus tained, it is reported. California wool continues dull. Fall wool is not wanted nnd sales of only 30,000 pounds at 10 to 20 cents, and 50,000 pounds on privato terms, nro rcnortod. Spring wool is scarce, with sales of 1000 pounds choice at 2(1 cents, nnd 10,000 pounds on pri vato terms. In Western unwashed, un merchantable fiooeos thero hnvo been sales of 12,000 pounds No. 1 nt 30 conts, 50,000 pounds Ohio at 251 cents, and 1 1,500 pounds black on privato terms. CARE OP STOCK. If it would not "infringo" too much on tho "rights of American citizens," thcro should be a legal prohibition against any man owning more stock than he can winter in good order, l'co plo gamble on the chances whon thoy over-stock ranges and tako no caro of tho animals thoy own but do not "keep.' It is cruolty and hcartlossncs? above all reason if wo aro actually what wo pretend a human people. Thoro are scarco ovor a winter whero animals run ning out do not Buffer and some usually dio of exposure, but time and oxpor- ienco show that taking nil these chances and discounting all losses, cattle and stock pay a big intcrost oji tho invest ment. So tho business of owning great herds, nnd straw! ng thorn through our wintors, continues. If stock wcro prop erly cared for it would still prove profit able t? own it. Tho trouble is that in humanity prevails nnd men aro heart- loss nnd cruel. They gnmblo on their chances and nro worso thnu tho ordi nary sharper because their businoss in volves much bruto suffering. Mon who senrco own an aero will have thousands of cattlo and horses or sbeop and use a range that should belong to actual Bot tlers. Stock owned in small bnnds or flocks and cared for properly is worth moro than poor aud starved animals over can be. Tho man who manages well saves theso torriblo losses and tho extra incomo ho collocts pays all his out lay for shelter and fcod, but he is too inert and indiflldont to provido as ho should and his Hocks and herds aro Biif- fcrers. Somo action is necossary to pro toot the rango from those who do not take care of their stock. Hrmp or riat.
