Santinm Valley nnd planted an orchard

that is on tho farm of his youngest son,

taken to cullivato tho land or to pre

A fish commissioner is created, with
mi appropriation to maintain a hatch
ing. Wu have never felt that this was a
duty that devolves on our State, but

fish nnd create tho need of such works.
Washington Territory it ns much inter
ested ns we aro aud should bear a share
of tho expense if it becomes a charge on
tho State. Tho Stnto in taxed for the
benefit of cannery men who exterminate
tho salmon in carrying on their busi
ness. Tho peoplo of Oregon pay twice
tho price for fish on account of these
fisheries, nnd then nro taxed to keep up
tho salmon supply for tho benefit of
those canneries, Tho taxw thoy pay
will not nearly loop up tho commission
and tho hatching, and tho Stato aud
publio recoivo littlo benefit.
