MRS HAIiniOT T. CLARKK, Entro.
THAT LINBFBNOB.
Old Farmer Smith oim home In t miff
For hU field the othar day,
While his tweet little wife, the pride of hli
life,
At her wheel was spinning away.
-And ever nd anon o gay little long
With the buzz of her wheel kept time;
And hia wrathful brow is clearing now,
Under her chearfnl ihyme.
"Come, como, little Turk, put away your
work,
And listen to what I say :
What can I do, but a quarrel brew
With the man acroaa the way.
"Ivo built my fence, but he wont commence
To lay a ainglo rail ( '
Hia cattle got in, and tho feed got thin
I am tempted to make a a)e 1"
4lWhy, John, dear John, how you do go on I
I am afraid it will be ai they lay,"
"No, no, little wife, I heard that atrife
In a lawyer' hand don's pay,
"II o la picking a flaw, to drive mo to law
I am afraid that he aaid he would
And you know, lone; ago, ltw wronged me to,
I vowed that I never ahould.
"So what can I do, that I will not rue
To the man acroaa the way t"
"If that'awhatyou want, I can help you hauat
That man with n acepter gray.
"Thirty dollars will do, carry you through
And then you havo gained a neighbor;
It would cost you more to peep in tho door
Of A court, and a much more labor.
"Jnat nse your good tense let's build him
a fence,
And shame bad acta out of tho fellow."
They built up hia part, aad sent to hia heart
Lovo'a dart where tho good thoughts mellow
That very aame night, by the candle light,
They opened with interest a letter :
Not a word was thcro, but three sroenbasks
Mr
Said tho min was (growing better.
SCHOOL BOOKS.
Thoro 8ccma to bo littlo dout but out
sido lobyists arc at work trying to hin
der nny legislation in regnrd to homo
printing nnd famishing of school books.
Tho frequent charges of school books
has worked n hardship in families, with
benefit only to thoeo who print and sell
theso books. With tho cxpcricnco of
many years and with investigation of
tho now methods and new books, wo do
not think thoro has been sufficient im
provement in school books to warrant
tho many changes that havo been made.
To mako learning easy ia not dosirablo,
tho etndont should bo allowed to do a
littlo thinking on his own hook. Thcro
is a monopoly in California, which with
other parties, desiro to keep on furnish
ing young Oregonian with books. If
wo arc to havo now books, lot us print
thorn at home, and so havo tho benofit
of tho monoy spent, besides giving em
ployment to our own people. Thoro
must bo good profits in tho business, or
thcro would not bo bo much troublo and
expenio employed and spent in do
fending all efforts herotoforo mado in
regard to this matter. Farmers arc
just as much interested in tho bill as
any ono perhaps more so, for no clasH
set bo littlo rccompenBO for labor and
invoetmonts as the farmers of Oregon
and feci tho oxponso of now books each
year.
the w. c. T. v.
On tho organization of tho Woman's
Christian Temperanco Union, thoro
was for several years only an incomo of
about a thousand a year now thoro is
from eight to ten thousand givon year
ly to toward tho work. In this twelvo
years of work there has been a great
deal accomplished. Principally, has tho
Union.through legislation procured laws,
by which children shall bo taught in
schools the effects of alcoholics and nar
cotics upon the human system. In Sa
le ra a reading room is open and kept
ploasantly warmod and lightod, for tho
benefit of this organization and to furth
er its interests. Thero has been a great
work done by the W. C. T. U. for tho
causa of temperance. Already has
other nations followed with similar
organizations -Scandinavia, Australia
and Germany.
Il is said that the Japanese are scr
serionusly thinking of starting woolen
factories in their country. There is nl
ready a demand for woolen fabrics
among the rich and it is liable to extend
very soon to the poorer classes. The
wool would havo to be imported from
Xew Zealand and Australia. Tho cloth
hitherto used by the native tailors has
been imported mostly from Vermont
and other New England States.
See Dr. Striker's advertisement in
another column. The Doctor is -well
known in Oregon as a successful prac
tioner. Any one suffering from what is
considered an incurable ditease would
do well to consult the Doctor.
SHALL WOMEN VOTET
This vexing question camo beforo
Congress a few dayo ago, it camo to a
final voto of IS ayes to 31 nays. This
is not at all discouraging to tho minor
ityindeed it is oncouraging, for tho
matter was championed by sotuo of tho
best men in Congress. Our own Sena
tors stood by faithfully Senator Dolph
giving somo vory pertiment replies to
tho opposition who tried to mako tho
question rodiculous by asking in tho us
ual way "how can a woman sit an a
jury with a young child in her armB?"
To this Sonator Dolph gavo a dignifiod
rcjonder that settled tho question.
In tho city of Now York two ladies
havo been appointed to tho board of ed
ucation. Tho London school board has
for yoars had n woman as ono of its
most activo workors.

Wny atrls Dont Marry.
A prominent woman Physician of
Itofitfm has freely expressed her convic
tion that the great superiority in cul
ture of so many of tho young girls of to
day over that of tho average rcon who
go early into Imsincrs exerts ono very
bad effect, namely, that these young
do not want to marry such men. There
is no doubt a great deal of truth in tho
statement. In fool, in other depart
ments it has always been noticed that
ono of tho f tending ill effects of tho cul
ture, say, of flowers, has been to mako
its votary prefer a tea rose to a head of
cabbago, or, of music, to prefer a har
monious orchestra to a discordant
street band ; or, of roligion, to prefer
piety to profanity. Now, thero is no
reason why tho rule should not work
equally in the case of marriage. Tho
maxium that "any husband is better
than no husband" bad once a great
deal of truth in it, for the condition of
the unmarried woman was in bygone
days a forlorn one. She could no more
help growing sour than milk in a thun
storm. Any and every woman with
the most insignificant sprig of a hus
band could turn up her nose at her and
embody a weight of public opinion in
her contemptoua attitude that few sin
gle unfortunates could have the dignity
and self-respect to stand up against. To
day, however, the scales tip tho other
way with a vengeance.

TURNINO. OVER A NEW LEAP.
The year begin. I tur J a leaf,
All writ over with good resolves.
Each to fulQIl will be in chief
My aim while earth its round revo'ves.
How many a leaf I'vo turned before,
And tried to make tho record true;
Ksch year a wreck on Timo's dull shore
Proved much I dared, but littlo knew.
Ah, bright resolve I Uow high you bear
The futiue's hopeful standard on ;
IIow bravo you start; how poor you wear!
How soon aro hopo and courage pono I
You point to deeds of sacrifice,
You ahun tho path of careless ease;
Lentils and wooden ahoctl It this
Tho fare a human soul to please ?
What wonder, then, if men do fall,
Where good is over all austere;
Whilo vlco is fair and pleasant all,
And turns the leaf to lead the yearl
Yet ttill once more I turn the leaf ;
And mean to walk the better way;
I struggle with old unbelief,
And ttrivo to reaoh the perfect day.
Why ahould the road that leads to heaven
Be all ono reach of aterlile sand f
Why not, just here and thore, be given
A roso, to deck the dreary land I
But why replnel Others havo trod,
With aorer feet and heavier aina,
Their painful pathway toward their God
My pilgrimago anew begins.
Failuro and failure, hitherto
Has time (ascribed upon my lcavos;
I'vo wandered many a harvest through,
And nover yot havo gtthered sheaves.
Vet onco again the leaf I turn,
Hope against hope for one success ;
One merit mark at least to earn;
One sunbeam in tho wilderness.
OUR LETTER BOX.
Snow has conic at last to this valloy,
but after a wcok of fun for our boys
and girls, wo begin to hear tho welcome
drip, drip, from tho cavos of our houeo.
Whero snow and cold weather como as
regular thing, and where provision is
mado for ovory domentio animal, thon
wo may find pleasure in wintor sports.
Hut hero, whore many keep moro ani
mals than can bo woll housed and fed.
It brings pain to tho hoart to sco tho
whito flakes coming down.
Skating is a flnooxorciso, both for boys
nnd girls. It is a graceful exorcise,
too, whero tho skaters can master tho
accomplishment.
Mary says she has undertaken to
help in Sunday School by teaching,
This is a good beginning for Mary. It
will call for somo study on her part.
Sho roust proparo herself beforo Sunday
coinos, so that sho may havo somothing
to impart to her scholars. It is impor
tant that evory child should know tho
Conimandmonts by heart, and wo aro
suro Mary will soo that a fow verses aro
loarned for each Sabbath.
Olon gives a short lettor this timo, but
that is hotter than to send nono. Ho
wilt got courago to writo more noxt
timo. Who would think of buttercups
iu winter?
Delia too sends her good will to tho
Circle. Wo think by this timo, unless a
Chinook has como, that thoso butter
cups aro under some deep whito snow.
James writes a good hand, and spells
correctly, too. Wo think ho has im
proved tho opportunities beforo him.
Wo judge from his letter that ho is ono
of thoso livo boys, who will push ahoad,
byo and byo growing up a straightfor
ward man, with u shop of his own somo
timo. If James is "Boss" of tho stablo,
wo want him to soo that ihoso horses
aro not abused not jorked, kickod, and
whipped beforo they know what is
wanted of them. A horso is a noblo
animal, ono that wishes to do and
to pnll to ploaso, and always will do
their best if they only understand. But
a horso may bo misused until ho has no
intelligence. Let us know, James, what
you think of this.
