Wo aro now making rapid progress towards spring and tho man or woman who hns trees to plant should improvo tho first opportunity when tho ground is dry enough to work, to do so. friend, who grows poaches very sue ccssfully, express as his opinion that thoro is nothing gained by setting out peaches in tho fall, though it may bo bettor for othor trees. Now is tho time if not already dono to trim tho or chard. It is not advisable to cut lnrgo limbs off aftor tho first of April ; that is, to cut off wood that is sovoral years old, but wood of tho past'yoiirs growth can bo cut without injury during tho tho spring. It will bo better to do all tho trimming previous to April, and before tho sap commonccs to How freely. It is better to trim in the fall than to defer until February, for as soon as tho sap has gone down and tho wood of last year's growth has matured it will do to trim trees. The science of trimming is to cut back young limbs about two thirds their growth the past year nnd to cut offcloso all unnecessary growth. Keep tho top of tho tree open enough to lot in sun and air to a healthy extent, and balanco tho troo with tho shears. If you see a treo growing more on ouo sldo tlinn another, trim tho most on tho overgrown side and in a few yoars you will lmvo a well bal anced tree. Peaches should bo trimed about the middlo of August at which timo tho wood hns tmulo its proper growth, mat leaves any lorco leit in tho sap to thoroughly and strongly ma ture tho fruit buds that are horning. To Experiment With. Fertlltxers A firm at Astoria has a largo quantity of fish guano which is a superior fertilizer and is extensively used in old settled countries. Hero fanners lmvo so fur de pended on the natural fertility of the soil. Mr. W. S. Lathi, who has two large farms back of Kast Portland, has concluded to experiment with fertilizers, ami will this season use a lot of lime, plaster and fish guano on tlltlerent patches of land to Ascertain which gives tho best results. His oxporleuco in the matter will bo beneficial to tho farmers of tho Stato when it becomes nocessary for them to enrich their farms. Ho has already experimented to souio extent with plaster, ami found it very bciiefi ciul to grass lawns. Ho has tho timo and tho money and tho land necessary for muking costly experiments, anil if ho don't make anything by them he will accumulate a largo stock of experience, and that experience will bo worth all it costs him to tho rest of us. Ho has nothing olso to do with his timo ami money and is solving problems that are worth much to farmors, who must soon resort to fertilizers. Syrup of 'U. Stock aro doing well every whore. Henry Allen, of tho Waldo Hills, has over 500 head of sheep and goats on his place, besides several head of horses and cattle. They have thrived excellent all wintor without nny attention other than an nccasionul salt ing. L. F. Musclier and L. Shindler arc each stock raisers.
