Food for nories-Bomo Points of Value to
Fanneri Everywhere.
Fnst driving and slow pulling or haul
ing heavy loads upon roads requires
diflurout food for horses. Tho differ-
enco between thoso two kinds of work
would reasonably call for diflcronl feed
ing. Tho fast working horso oxoitu tho
luns inoro freely than tho slow worker,
henco tho food should ho luoro concon
tratcd, hut yet digcstiblo; it should aloo
contain a, sufllciont quantity of fibre
mixed with tho liner matter to givo tho
masticated food a porous consistence
nnd prevent it from forming a too solid
mass in tho stomach. Outs Jb precisely
tho kind of food required to meet such
a case. Tho husk of oats forms a largo
portion of tho substanco of tho grain,
whilo tho kernel is rich in nltrogonous
mattor and has eufllclont carbonaceous
matter to supply all tho needs of tho
lungs, which aro stimulated by a muscu
lar action to greatly increased exertion.
Oats contain precisely tho requisite pro
portion of fino and coarso matter for
tho horso nlimout in a Biilllclcntly con
centrated condition to avoid overloading
tho stomach, and is thus tho best food
for tho fast working horse, which needs
no hay. Hut to got tho best results
from this grain it should bo crushed
and fed four times a day, bo that tho
system is never exhausted by want of
food.
Tho slow working horso on tho con
trary tho farm horso, for instanco
docs not rcquiro n conenntrated food
nor ho frcquont fooild g, bocauso tho
work is slowor and ihu consumption or
forco is not great. A. naturo richer in
cnrbouacoouH elements is required, and
as bulk is not objoctiouablo n cheaper
food may bo used. Tho ration of a city
car horso, for instance, which doos not
travol moro than four miles au hour, is
about twenty poundH of hay, and twen
ty pounds of cornmcal, finely ground,
ami on tliis feed I ho horses
trnvol about twenty miles a day. Tho
meal is uovor fed alone, and always
without hay, which is wetted, and it is
found tho llnor tho meal is tho bettor it
Htluks to and mixes with the hay, and
tho better, therefore, it indigested. To
feed whole corn and long hay has been
pro veil over and ovor again to ho a
wastoof nuo-third of tho food, and to
feed lino meal alone, without tho nut
hay, is exceedingly daugorous, and apt
to prodtieo a fatal attack of colic. Wlioro
economy is a pressing nooil, a fairly
good but cheap food may bo mado by
grinding togothor ton bushels of oats
and livo bushels of corn, adding one
bushel of ryo or rough rice if it happens
to bo at hand. A littlo linsocd oil calco
would mid to tho value of tho compound,
but this is not usually to bo had !n tho
South. Add to this hay, of courro.
Where tlio grain ration is rich, tho
hay may bo reduced in quantity and
straw substituted for it. Tho Pennsyl
vania farmers uso tlioir ryo straw for
horse's foeil and soil hay, bringing back
for ovory ton of hay u largo load of ma
nure which taxes tho full strength of
their enormous wagons and their power
ful four horso teams. Tho nitrogenous
character of clover hay fits it excellently
for tho food of working hordes, and as it
is cut and wetted and mixed with corn
meal makes, without any other mixture,
u HUllieieut food for tho hardest working
farm hotes. N'ow York Times.
Many a girl finds first in tho frivolities
and next in tho iniquity of tho streets
that excitoment by which rogrcts and
romorso maybodoadoncd. If sho is too
strong in principle, too puro and olo
vatcd in tono thus to sink down to ono
of tho pitiublo womon of tho street, sho
may find henulf in sotno cold garrol,
lonoly, overworked, despondent and
miserable
Hotter remain at home than risk tho
failure which attends to many girls who
go to tho city in pursuit of high pay for
light work. It is tho saddest of all von
hires, forsaking a country homo for tho
illusions and doccptions of a largo town.

Breeding One Kind ot Swine
If a man who engages in farming or
breeding, or both, finds that ho has a
tasto and talent for pursuing a givon
lino of farming, or breeding a particu
lar kind of livo stock, ho had bettor by
all moans adhero to that toward which
his tasto leads him, as in that particular
direction ho is suro to take tho most in
terest and will havo tho best assuranco
of success. Farmers who havo sot out
in business with tho determination to
grow a certain kind of crop, and havo
givon a proper attention to rotation, fer
tilizing, otc, havo tho advanlago of
always boing on hand with tho regular
artlclo when prices aro stiff and tho de
mand is good, Whorcas thoso who
change about nro protty suro to tako up
with a now undortaking after it has had
a boom, and by tho timo tlioy aro ready
to appear in market with their crop, tho
tido has como and gone.
A breeder of Ilcrkshiros, Poland-Chinas,
or other breed of swine, who has
for a period of years steadily adhered to
tho ono breed, it is fair to assumo, has
possessed himself of all tho essential
facts relating to its brooding and man
ngomont, and if ho docs not excel ono
not so long in that particular lino, it is
for tho roason of poisoning less mental
penetration and forco. IIoucc, tho man
who anchors to a given breed, and suc
ceeds, is to givo tho branch that ho con
trols a typo moro or los peculiar to
himself, and a reputation in keeping
with tho merit ho fixes upon his herd.
Fix tho mind upon a typo, after taking
full consideration, and adhere to this.
Anchor to deep, long-tried blood, this
being within a symmolrical contour,
and in changing for now blood always

tho standard first fixed upon, uovor be

The Advantaged of winter Dairying.
Advlco to Country dirts,
City life is not idl that it is painted.
It has its pleasures and conveniences,
'lit it also has its serious drawbacks,
llofortuuaking'tho plunge into life in
iho city, country girls eliouM n-k thorn
m'Ivos what Is really to lo gained by it.
Perhaps in tlioir quiet, rural homos
some stray advertisement has vouched
them, promising to young women high
salaries for light work. Hundreds of
thoso advertisements aro framed (or tho
very purpose of deceiving tho unwary,
Thoy accomplish their purpose, how
over, and large numbers of young girls
rush up to tho city, dazzled by tho gen
erous profusion of promises.
A girl fiom tho farm answers ono of
thcfo advertisements, l.ifo may havo
boon slow at home, but thcro was always
good food and in plenty, and theio was
somo one to euro for in tho old farm
house. When sho goes to tho big city
sho linds that tho "light woik" consists
in working all day in n badly lighted
and ill-smelling work-shop, where tcores
of other girls nnd women aro employed
at wages haidly high enough to keep
body and boiiI together.
Wo know what often comes next,
Tho girl has left homo, sho is lu.iiunoil
or unwilling to return, and sho imiat
tako tho consoquoucos, oftentimes ono
of two things slmmo or suilerin.
Thcro aro many who, judging from
tho courso thoy follow, think that sum
mer is tho only favorable timo for but
(or making. With thorn tho winter is
an uuprolltablo season, during which
tho cows must bo fed without making
nny return, When thoy mid to their
stock of cows, thoy soloct such as nro
fresh in tho early spring, expecting to
havo good roturns during tho suiumor,
and when winter comes, cither dispose
of them to somo ono who will fatten
thorn for beef, or koop thorn tluough tho
winter in anticipation of their again be
ing fresh when spring comes. It will
be readily soeu that the plan of having
n cow idle throo months of tho year,
and that during tho season when butter
commands tho best price, must bo un
profitable. To bo sure, tho cows will
need moro caro and protection against
tho cold when giving a largo yield of
milk in tho winter, but this can bo go-
cured ut comparatively small oxponso,
where ordinarily comfortable barns
havo been envied. Thoso may havo au
ouni hum,: of boards on tho inside, tho
sp.uo between that and tho outside
boards boing tilled stuiw, well packed
in, or sawdust, Then, too, tho cows can
bo moro easily ami regularly cured tor
when confined to tho stablo or yard than
during tho summer, when turned to
pasture, oftentimes somo distnnco away.
Tho buttor is moro easily kept swoet
and solid when tho weather is cold, nnd
this is tho season when it brings tho
best price. Winter dairying has many
advantages over that carried on in tho
summer, as many who havo tried it will
testify. Particularly has this been
found to bo tho case in thoso stated
where tho summer season is long and
hot Somo havo tried both systems in
tho wost where tho winters nro sovcre,
and have found tho quality, ns well
as the product, quite equal to that
of tho summer months. Livo Stock
Journal.
It has bocn demonstrated by careful
practical tests that tho probabilities of
tho germination of seed wheat nro
greatly increased by packing tho earth
on tho 6ced at timo of drilling, and that,
in consequence, tho quantity of socd can
safely bo reduced ono-half or one-third
of tho amount usually sown, with full
assurance that tho yield will also bo
greatly iucrcasod. Tho Hoosior Ilunucr
