Limo ia a puritier, nnd should bo used

To pnek eggs for tho winter supply,

tho best wacking material, and tho eggs

Tho fruit growers of California secur

not destroy fruit, howover, unless other
sources for obtaining honoy aro lim

poultry business. Tho person who waits
for Mr. Luck to raiso his chicks, will bo
badly left at tho end of tho season. Tho
luck that awaits any orlodoponds ontirly

industrious, but don't trust to luck, or
you will got fooled every timo. Ho is a
mighty treacherous old man.
Tho special good points in duck cul
ture arc 1st, thoy novor havo cholera,
roup, norgapes, thoy novor get drowned,
and aftor tho first wcok, not two por

which hatch bettor than lion's eggs.
3d. Thoy havo flno and dolicious flesh
for tablo uso. 'lth. Thoy attain to
thrco and a half or four pounds weight
in ten weeks' timo and in tho eastern
market whero thoy aro' known and

About Wyandotte.
Although becamingquito woll known,
tho Wyandottcs aro still such a now
breed that a great many farmers and
their bettor halves who raiso poultry aro
not familiar with thorn. Tho Wyan
dottcs may to somo extent bo callod a
"gonoral, purposo" chiokon, as thoy havo
somo of tho best qualities of somo breeds
diftoring from oach othor. Wo glvo a
description of them as writton by a
breeder in ono of our exchanges, which
is no doubt a fair presentation of their
claims :
Thoy weigh when fully maturod:
Cocks, eight and ono-hnlf pounds, and
hons six and a half. Thoy aro a beau
tiful fowl to look upon, too, aftor all
clso is said and dono. Thoy aro black
and white Tho contor of tho feather
is white, with a hoavy black edgo around
it ; logs yellow and frco from feathers ;
comb, n flat or roBO comb, similar to tho
roso corcb, similar to tho Hamburg, al
though not so prominont; fitting closer
to tho head, it seldom frosts, ovon in tho
coldest woathor, which is a great point
to bo considered by those living in tho
cold Northom Stale?, whero tho Leg
horn or Spanish will freoze to doath if
not kept by tho firo, almost.
As chicks thoy aro easily reared.
Thoy feather quickly, grow rapidly, and
with good caro mako early layors ; thoy
lay a flno largo egg, ranging from nearly
wuito to quito yellow in color, witn a
good thick shell. In fact, thoy aro pre
eminently tho farmor'a fowl for gonoral
purposes. In Baying this, I do not
strivo to pull down othor desorvedly
popular varieties, but simply stand them
upon tholr own footing, whoro yon will
And thoy aro ablo to stand. But liko
all othor good breeds, thoy can not
convert fenco rails into eggs. They
must havo somo good food.
It is a breed that has been brod pri
vately for somo fifteen years, undor dif
ferent namos up to tho year eighty
three, when thoy wero admitted to tho
standard as a thoroughbred fowl, and
tho namo Wyandotto applied. Thoy
occupy tho middlo ground between tho
largo and clumsy Asiatic and tho smaller
varieties, such as Leghorns, Spanish,
etc., and as such tho fill a very impor
tant position among farmers who feel
that they cannot koep two distinct
kinds such as tho Cochins or Bnunahs
for flesh, and tho Spanish for ogga;
they answering tho purpose admirably
for both. In fact, while they are almost
impossible to beat in tho production of
eccrs. thev aro tho finest eating fowl wo
havo, and 1 believe aro acknowledged to
bo by all who havo ever tried them,
which makes them in great demand as
broilers.
Cblntao Flimints.
Some fanm-s in Linn county claim to
suffer serwlv fr-mi theso birds and
others do not mnko so much complaint,
but that can bo accounted for by tho
fact thathe bird want in certain local
ities, as tho Herald says, and would
naturally troublo tho farmers in tho
vicinity of their haunts. Somothing
depends on their eating qualities, or
rather thoir valuo as food for man, and
wo havo heard ono who tried it say ho
"had as soon cat a crow." Tho gonoral
opinion scorns to bo that thoy are not a
valuable bird for food.
Four years ago Mr. John Donny
turned looso on hia placo in this county
eleven China or Mongolian pheasants,
tho only ones in Amorica. Tho birds'
wcro imported from China as an experi
ment, and tho Legislature passed a
stringont law protecting them for a
poriod of fivo years. In two years, by
another act, tho timo was extended two
yoars longer. Tho climnto seems to
havo been perfect for thorn, and thoy
havo increased vory rapidly, until now,
though most plontiful hero, thoy can bo
found in all tho adjoining countios.
Thoy mostly inhabit tho low, dry
Bwalcs, and aro novcr found in tho brush
or timber. Oak crcok, a small wet
wcathor stream south of Albany, is a
favorito placo for thorn, and in a singlo
day's hunt as many as a hundred can
bo soon.
As to whether or not thoy aro moro
detrimental to tho farmer than tho
grouse, thcro is n diversity of opinion.
Somo claim thoy are, and as proof call
attention to fields of grain, portions of
which havo boon dostroyed; whilo
others claim that an equal number of
grouso would havo boon equally as
destructive.
Hunters aro moro interested in know
ing whether or not they nro a gamo
bird. Should tho epicure ask, ho could
not bo answered, as no ono could bo
found who had eaten one. Rumor, how
over, says tho flesh is vory whito, and
tastes similar to chickon. In beauty
thoy surpass any Oregon bird. Tho
malo is about one-fifty larger than a
grouse, and is decked with feathers of
overy color, whilo around its neck is a
black ring tinged with red, and a tail
sixteen inches in length adds to its
beauty whilo on tho wing. It crows liko
a young rooster, and whon flushed flics
straight away with a coarso whirring
noise, keeping in a straight line, as docs
tho quail.
But tho dog, pity tho poor bruto, that
catching tho scent, comes to a stand and
expects to find his bird, and is often mis,
taken. It may bo thoro and may not.
On foot thoy aro tho equal of any dog,
and socm to tako prido in giving thorn
chaso through tho tall grass or wheat,
Thoy cannot bo depended on, for when
tho dog sots whero tho bird should be, it
may bo an hundred miles away, and
aunning at tho rato of twonty-four knots
an hour.
Tho last, and porhaps tho greatest ob
jection tho hunter has to thorn, is that
whoro thoy livo, no othor bird can livo.
That is, in places on tho prairio whero
formerly could bo found plonty of grouso
and pheasants, thoro are nono now, all
having beon driven to tho timber.
Many favor tho ropoal of tho protec
tion law, and others favor lotting it
stand j at any rato, whilo a law it should
bo enforced, and, whothor from tho city
or tho country, tho person found guilty
of killing thorn should bo punished to
tho full extent of tho law. Albany
