Tlio first fotv months of a calf or colt

One of tlio most successful of Illinois
dairymen keeps ono hundred cows, but
ho novor raises a pound of liny. lie

in blossom, bound nnd cot up until
cured, or till winter, when it is removed
to tlio bnru. Ho golB sovon tons of
this dry fodder to tlio ncro, nnd clnitiM
it is ns goon iih tlio best of liny.
To pull wool well, remark uu ox-

shcon owner to know. Sprinklo the
wet skins on tlio ilcsh sido with air
slaked limo; lay two skins togothor on
tlio flesh sido nnd pile up tlio polls in n
lionp. In n few days the henp will
swont qiiilo frcoly, whon tlio wool parts
from tlio skin easily nnd may bo stripped

knowing nnd romombcring.
In Now Mexico, whero Bhoop nro kept
away from hnbilntions, it is always tho
custom to hnvo nnnny gonls with tho

Thoy mako flnoguidcB, protect tho flock

Tho Floor 0 tho Homo's Stall.
Tho next four or fivo montlis wilt bo a
trying poriod for liorscs whoso winter
comfort has not bcon wisely providod
for, Somo horso-ownera, thinking to ndd
to tho horse's comfort by giving drain
ago to tho floor of tho stall, raiso tho
forward pnrt of tho floor n couplo of
inches or so highor than tho rear part.
Tho real incentive to this is mora likely
to bo tho idea of greater ciiho to tho
ownor in kooping tho stall dry with tho
least outlay of bedding and labor, with
out 11 thought of tho great discomfort
impoaod upon tho horso.
If tho ownor will obsorvo tho position
assumed by horses at rest in pnsturo or
stnblo-ynrd, ho will find that a horso
standing for soma timo in n position
best calculated of any to givo him ro.H
permitting tho animal to bo his own
judgo will novor, for n length of timo,
stand with his foro foot 011 ground
highor than that occupied by his hind
feet, for this position puts tho muscles
of tho loin and quarters upon tho strain,
whllo, with tlio position rovorscd, tho
muscles nro relaxed, honco at rest. It
should bo liorno in mind that tho fibres
of tho muscles, whilo in tho matter of
contraction ami roinxuiion, aro iiko a
spiral spring, aro unlike tho spring iu
that they tiro from bolng put under
tension and kept so. Thoy require rest,
while tho win) spring knows no tiro,
henco needs no rust.
Tho horse, coullnod on n floor of tho
kind referred to, soon loams to get back
tho length of his hitching strap, thus
lessoning the angle of his footing by
getting his hind feet well out upon tho
lloorottho alley-way. How ofton do
wo llud that iu passing behind it row of
horses that stand upon n slanting tloor,
wo uro compelled to send thorn forward
into their stalls that wo may pass along.
Test this by tying a horso in a wide,
double stall, whero, by changing his
position nt will, ho can place himself on
level footing, or ovou uioro than this,
can plant his hind fvet where they will
be slightly higher than his foro feet,
then obsorvo, after ho has tinishod his
feed, how ofton ho is found iu one posi
tion and how often in tho other, Tlsco
tho tloor of a box-stall a few inches
011 0110 sido than tho other, and observe
tho proportion of time tho liorro con
fined therein upends with his head
toward tho side where the iloor is
highest.
Wo are well nwaro, from long experi
ence with horses, that tho gelding,
urinating as ho does upon the center
portion of his bedding, so "fouls his
nest" ns to causo no inconsiderable
trouble iu keeping his stall dry. This,
which wo admit is quite an argument
iu favor of drainage toward tho rear, is
easily obviated by having a tight lower
lloor with fall toward tho rear, placing
above this an open, or slatted floor, this
being raised at tho rear to a lovel or
oven a fraction abovo. This opon floor
can Ik) inndo very quickly and ohoaply,
bhould bo moveable, so it can bo taken
out for tho purposo of cloonlng tho
stationary tloor, uud permitting tho lat
ter to got thoroughly dry ns needed.

verdict is ngninst tho washing of sbcop.
In most foreign countrios tho wool is
shorn and marketed in the unwashed
state. Tins is tho cno with all South
American and llussinn Mori no wools.
In tho first years of Bhcep-growing in
Australia nearly all tho wool was washed
upon tho sheep's back, but tho propor
tion has each year boon growing loss
until now about 75 per cent, of tho clip
is marketed in tlio grease. About 15
per cent, mostly mndo up from tho
skirts and nieces, is shipped scoured,
nnd not moro than 8 to 10 per cent, aro
wnshed fleeces. Tho prnctico of skirt
ing is much moro advantageous than
washing to both buyers and sellers for
fino wools especially. Tho buyer is
willing to givo more for tho flocco freed
from tho skirts that nro not auitnblo for
his work, and tho skirts, oithcr in tho
grenso or scoured, will bring their full
vnluo from tho consumers to whoso
work thoy nro adapted. In buying fino
domestic wnshed fleeces as marketed in
this country the manufacturer estimates
his loss upon tho skirts nnd dung-locks

Thoro is no breed of cnttlo that will,
under nil circumstances, ndverso and
othcrwlso, turn out well and pay for
their keep and care. If any ono thinks
ho can stock up with a brood of cattlo,
tho individuals of which will grow to
adult staturo and weight on less feed
than tho generality of tlio samo class
rcquiro, ho may as well disibuso his
mind of this idoa. A calf of ono of
tho fattening breeds, weighing at birth,
say 100 pounds, will roquiro a good
deal of feed during tho first twelvo
mouths to bring tho weight up to what
it should bo 1,100 to 1,200 pounds. In
othor words, it is rcquirod to build onto
tho small beginning a thousand pounds
during twelvo months, and Micro is no
brood within which this can bo dnuo at
a vory much loss oxpondituro of feed
than within tho linos of any othor
roputnblo stock, kopt for tho purposo.
It is moro what is in tho man Minn in
tho cnttlo that mnkes a breed successful
that is to sny, good specimens of ono
of tho beof broods will do badly iu tho
hands of ono man, for tho want of taste,
skill, and judgment in tho feeding and
general management Whon speci
mens of a given breed, ono having no-
quired a noteworthy reputation in a
certain direction, fall into tho hands of
n novico in cattlo mattors, ho is too
much giving to thinking that ho has
procured a golden egg that will hatch
without tho need of a steady warmth
to bring out n ohiok. Tho silly man,
finding that egg will not hatch in a day,
followH up tho error by seeking another,
thinking to do nu impossible thing.
This fairly represents tho man who,
procunliig an improvod cattlo beast,
orronoously supposes ho can rest upon
his oars, for, having procured a beast
rapnblo of attaining to a certain end,
ho commits tho fatal error of supposing
that results will follow, though ho Hits
idly by, using no efforts. The improved
cattlo beast Is like a high-class locomo
tive, in that it is cnpablo of great at
tainments, if placed uuder proper con
dition, kept well cleaned and supplied

It is annoying to tho breeder of blood
ed and fino fowls to find, whon ho offers
for wile eggs nonrly twice as largo as his
neighbors', that thoy bring no moro por
dozen than do the smaller 01103. Also,
the consumer is ofton vexed to find that
ho must pay tho samo prico to-day for a
dozen eggs that weigh a pound, that ho
yesterday paid for n dozon weighing n
pound and a half. Dosldcs, nu egg from
n well-fed fowl is hoavier nnd richer than
ono from a common fowl that is only
half fed, so that tho weight compared to
size, is nn indication of richness. Thus
eggs, of which oight will weigh n pound,
aro better and richor than thoso of ap
parently tho sumo aizo of which ten are
require for n pound. Of couroo, with
eggs nt four or fivo conts a dozon (and
hundreds of dozons havo beon sold in
past years for thoso figures), it is not
much matter ns to tho sizo ; but when
the prico ranges from twenty-tlvo to fifty
ceuts per dozon, it is a mattor worth
looking after. It is high time tho old
stylo of buying nnd soiling eggs was
discontinued. It is n relic ot tho past,
ami reminds of tho timo when dressod
hogs sold for a dollar a piece, without re
gard to size, nnd wero dull sale nt that.
Iusist upon it, thon, you who raiso
poultry ncd eggs for market, that tho
prico of eggs shall bo so much per
pouud, and thon it will bo somo induce
ment to farmers to raiso a better class
of fowls, and all will got thoir just dues.
