Tho killing of birds for millinory purposes is reaching a fright fully alarming figure. 01 Woman I You nro charged with being tho direct causo for tho'nnnunl murder, in Amor ica alone, of 5,000,000 harmless creatures tho pretty birds. And nil becnuso your shamoloss mastor, or siren mistress, Fashion, orders you to wear tho poor, murdorcd birds upon your head-gear. Thoso 8amo birds, if allowed to livo in pcaco with ns, as thoir and our Maker intonded, would havo bcon less usoful to us than tho horso or ox. Tho birds aro our ohiot natural protection against tho insist hordes which aro now accredited with doslroying yearly ovor 300,000, 000 worth ot food nnd fibor plants. Tho Capo Cod bird-killors shoot 10,000 torn each year, and near Philadelphia 1, 000,000 bobolinks havo bcon killed in a singlo month. A Now York dealer hondlos 80,000 skins a yoar, nnd 70,000 wore supplied to Now York denlora in four months from a singlo village In ono London auction room, over 760,000 bird skins were sold in four months last year. Thcso are but a fow figures. Tho result of tho slaughter is that in many localities tho birds aio nlmost it not wholly nnnihilatcd. Happily, tho American Ornithologists' Union has taken tho good work in hand of conn toracting tho brutal custom of fashion nnd of onforcing tho laws against bird (laughter. Queen Victoria h arrayed against tho custom of wearing b'rds in England, and h is proposed to organize societies of fnV,,onab1o wornon in out oilies to bring into d'sroputo lbi w'ek ed foil".
